Hmm...I didn't pay attention to that deal when it happened but it's overpriced. We need those picks. He is a solid player though. I know were in need of a good kick returner. Saunders didn't stand out as one until we cut him.

i would restructure him for a 5m per contract but if he wants more then I say no he is not worth it.

Sounds a lot better than 10. I've gotta admit I like him as a Jet and hope he comes back. For cheaper of course.

I really don't get it
The Jets upper crust (Woody) knew all along waiting for Quinn is a must.
Someone is going to wait and get him, why not us?
Too much smokescreen BS
If Bowels isn't announced today or tomorrow
Quinn's the guy. Which I think and hope it is

Competition is getting tough. Both Atlanta, and the 49'ers are better options. They have QB's

Denver? Well if nothing else they have legal weed

Just as long as if we wait we get him. We don't want to be left with the bottom of the barrel coach. I heard the Broncos are offering their new HC the opportunity to bring as his new guys in, which I'm sure is ideal for a HC. I'm pretty sure the Jets wanna retain a few coaches (Dunbar I hope)

Yeah I heard. If he takes Dunbar with him that will most likely be a blow to our defense.

Todd Bowles gaining momentum, set to meet with Mike Maccagnan

With Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn still involved in the playoffs, the New York Jets are focusing their attention on Todd Bowles, the highly-regarded Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator.

Bowles is scheduled to arrive in New Jersey late Tuesday for his second interview and -- this is the important part -- he's slated to meet with general manager-in-waiting Mike Maccagnan, according to a source. Bowles is the first head-coaching candidate to return for a second interview.

Maccagnan and Bowles have no prior working relationship, so this will be a get-acquainted session to gauge their compatibility. Bowles' candidacy has gained traction in recent days, perhaps because the Jets are concerned about waiting for Quinn, who is thought to be the frontrunner. By rule, Quinn can't be offered the job until his season is over, which could be Feb. 1 in the Super Bowl. By then, it might be hard to put together a good staff.

Bowles also is drawing serious interest from the Atlanta Falcons, who have scheduled him for a second interview. The Jets are mindful of that, so it might behoove them to keep him in the building and wrap up a deal before he can get on a plane to Atlanta -- if they feel that strongly about him. One of the key questions is his offensive coordinator; Bowles reportedly is interested in Cards quarterbacks coach Freddie Kitchens and Chan Gailey, whose name is circulating in the job mill after sitting out two seasons.

Bowles is a Bill Parcells disciple, and Parcells is said to be pushing Bowles in Atlanta, where his son-in-law -- Scott Pioli -- is a Falcons executive.

Aside from Bowles, the Jets have another interview on their dance card, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, whom they will meet Wednesday for the first time.

Bowles has raised his stock with the fine work he's done the past two seasons in Arizona. He has no head-coaching experience, save for three games as the Miami Dolphins' interim coach at the end of the 2011 season. Bowles is a New Jersey guy -- grew up in Elizabeth -- and served as the Jets' secondary coach in 2000, when he was handpicked by Parcells, who ran the front office.

Meanwhile, the Jets still haven't announced the Maccagnan hiring, although all signs point to him being named the general manager soon.

Hopefully they snag Bowles before he leaves to go to Atlanta. I always liked Bowles better then Quinn. Key difference:

Bowles runs his own defense; Quinn runs Carroll's. Though I do like Quinn also.

This is why Bowles has jumped ahead of Quinn for me.

Everything You Need to Know about Todd Bowles' Defense

By Scott Salmon  @ScottSalmon48 on Jan 13 2015, 2:58p 7

David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

In an earlier post, we discussed Dan Quinn's defense. It received such a positive reception that I wanted to look at Todd Bowles' defense, one of the other candidates the New York Jets are heavily considering for the open head coaching position.

Unlike Quinn, Bowles' defense is much harder to nail down. Quinn's defense is relatively straightforward. Although there are variations, there aren't many and they are easy to identify. That isn't the case with Bowles. To begin with, it's unclear what he would bring over to the Jets. He has operated multiple schemes, both 3-4 and 4-3, and is willing to change schemes completely to fit his personnel. Despite losing Karlos Dansby to free agency, Daryl Washington to a season-long drug suspension, Darnell Dockett to an ACL tear, John Abraham to IR, Tyrann Mathieu for a few weeks, etc., Bowles managed to have the fifth best defense by points allowed. You can compare this to the Jets, who ranked twenty-fourth.

That said, Bowles' defense in Arizona most closely resembles none other than the organized chaos of Rex Ryan. But not the Rex Ryan that we saw the past few years; the Rex Ryan that went to the AFC Championship in 2009 and 2010.

It's aggressive. As Greg Cosell stated, "Now, you could argue that they don't have a pure pass-rusher, but this is where Bowles comes in. This team blitzes more than any team in the NFL, and they blitz more on first down than any team in the NFL, and they're creative with their pressures. They're also very good with disguise."

It adapts to the opponent. When the Cardinals played the Dallas Cowboys, Bowles switched from a predominately 3-4 scheme to a 4-3, simply because it was a better matchup. They won that game 28-17, and ended DeMarco Murray's streak of 100-yard games.

It adapts to the players. To quote Dockett, "This defense is based on guys and what their ability allows them to be good at. What they were drafted for." When Bowles found that he didn't have an elite pass rusher, he balanced it out by adding more safeties... sometimes up to four on the field on any given down. This allowed him to cover athletic tight ends for longer, and had the added benefit of confusing offenses. Bowles doesn't force a round peg into a square hole... he finds another solution.

Unlike Quinn, I can't show you one formation to give you an almost complete understanding of Bowles' defense. It's far too complex and mutates too often to simplify into one article. Instead, what I can do is give you several examples of the type of scheme you'll see under Bowles.

https://cdn3.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/n1...uploads/chorus_asset/file/2929834/play1.0.jpg

So, this is a good play to show you that not is all it seems from where the players are initially lining up. Here, you have a nickel package. Three down linemen, three linebackers, and five defensive backs. There's an OLB standing up at the top of the formation, and he's going to rush the passer, looping around the right tackle. You have a three-tech defensive end stunting into the A gap, and another linebacker looping down and presumably past the left tackle, who is engaged with the six-tech defensive end. Meanwhile, in the secondary, you have mixed coverage. The outside corners are in man, and you have two safeties, the extra defensive back, and a linebacker in zone.

As I mentioned, this may remind you of Rex Ryan. It's a lot of mixed coverage with a core of man coverage, blitzes from unexpected places, and disguised scheming.

https://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/-i...uploads/chorus_asset/file/2929846/play2.0.jpg

This is the game I mentioned where they changed their scheme completely. Bowles uses a decent amount of 4-3 looks, but this game was an almost wholesale change. In this play, only one lineman actually goes where they're showing.

https://cdn1.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/OK...uploads/chorus_asset/file/2929854/play3.0.jpg

To avoid some confusion in this play, anyone that is in man coverage has a yellow line. On this play, you have some over the top safety help, and an overload blitz on the weak side. It results in a five-yard sack.

I wish I could give you a simple breakdown of everything Bowles will do, but the fact that I cannot gives you an idea of what kind of defense he runs. It's multiple and confusing as hell. It changes based on what his players can and can't do. On a Jets team that has struggled with players being forced into roles they can't handle, that may be what's needed going forward.

The Jets and Falcons had both scheduled a second head coaching interview with Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. Both interviews were reportedly scheduled to happen Wednesday, with the Falcons going first.

But now, the Jets will interview Bowles before the Falcons, according to a source with knowledge of Bowles' situation, who spoke on a condition of anonymity because he or she is not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The Jets' interview will occur Tuesday afternoon, immediately after Bowles arrives in New Jersey, the source confirmed. The source expects that Bowles will meet with Mike Maccagnan, the Jets' likely new general manager, during the interview.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network first reported that the Jets will interview Bowles before the Falcons, rather than the other way around.

So why were the Jets allowed to interview Bowles before the Falcons? Because the Jets asked for the second interview before the Falcons did, according to the source.

Going first is a potential advantage for the Jets, if they decide they are ready to make Bowles an offer. They'd be able to do it before Atlanta.

Bowles will be the first head coaching candidate whom the Jets have interviewed twice. Bowles, 51, is an Elizabeth native. He has never been a head coach, save for three games as the Dolphins' interim head coach in 2011.

Bowles has only been an NFL coordinator since midway through the 2012 season, with the Eagles. He is in his second season running the Cardinals' defense.

Bowles and Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn are considered the two favorites for the Jets' job. But Seattle is still alive in the playoffs, and the Jets can't even offer Quinn a contract until Seattle's season is done, let alone make a hire. If the Seahawks win this weekend in the NFC title game, that won't be until after the Feb. 1 Super Bowl. Arizona's season is over, so the Jets can offer Bowles their job at any time.

Even if Seattle does win this weekend, the Jets can interview Quinn for a second time next week, according to NFL rules. But the Jets still would not be able to make a hire, or or an offer to Quinn. Several other teams are also interested in him. He is the most coveted head coaching candidate available right now, so the Jets face competition.

Quinn also has interviewed with the 49ers, Bears and Falcons. The Jets and 49ers are reportedly the favorites to land him. But now, the Broncos reportedly want to speak with Quinn, who also interviewed with the Bills, before they hired ex-Jets coach Rex Ryan. Bowles' other interviews were with the 49ers, Bears and Falcons.

Would the Jets be willing to wait for Quinn, if Seattle makes the Super Bowl? Like Bowles, he has never been a head coach, so putting together a coaching staff in early February could be a challenge for him.

Jets owner Woody Johnson is approaching decision time, as the Falcons also have significant interest in Bowles, who appears to be Johnson's backup plan.

Johnson and his consultants, Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf, continue to explore their options with other candidates, too. They will interview Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott for the first time Wednesday.

But Quinn appears to be Johnson's top choice. Johnson reportedly was ready to fly to Seattle on Saturday, if the Panthers beat the Seahawks in the divisional round, to offer Quinn the job. That didn't happen, so the wait for Quinn continues.

If it ends up lasting a couple more weeks, might Johnson decide that an earlier offer to Bowles is a wiser option than continuing to wait for Quinn, considering there are no guarantees the Jets will land Quinn?

That remains unclear. But at least for now, the Jets will get first crack at a second interview with Bowles, their other top candidate.

Interesting that the Jets went through the trouble of getting the interview schedule reversed. Seems to indicate they are going to make him an offer before he speaks to the Falcons.

The good news is, if the Jets sign this guy they will have both a Colon, and a Bowles. They should be regular at least

i am more and more intrigued by him each article.

Starting to look like the Jets are going to blink and he is going to be the guy. That might not be such a bad thing I guess. Better then going all in with Quinn, and come away empty

Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is staying the night in New Jersey and will meet again with Jets officials in the morning.

I guess his flight to Atlanta is canceled.
