Brady missed a wide open Gronk on that 2 Point Play

On that critical two point try Brady chose to throw back across his body into double coverage to Edelman, which was promptly tipped and picked off, but had he simply looked straight ahead into his line of sight he would have seen a wide open Gronk, and yes, this constitutes wide open in the NFL:

Thats Brady on the right hash-mark, before the rush got there, and he had Gronk DIRECTLY in his line of sight.

Thats how close the Patriots came to tying that game

How awesome is that?:global (49):
It depends, have you watched the film to confirm he's open?
The safety could have been sprinting and about to run in front, plus the lb is right in the throwing lane, possibly blocking Bradys vision.

How can you tell that's a linebacker? I can't see any numbers.

Yes, I have seen the video, and it tells the same story the still shot tells. Gronk was in a sprint, he had the safety beat, and it was practically a straight line throw for Brady had he seen it. Its a slam-dunk throw for Tom Brady, or any adequate NFL QB for that matter.

Yea but you have Edelman, who is five yards closer, breaking in front of the defender who appears to not to be turned yet. That is without having to throw over another defender. What Taum didn't see is 97 coming over. Is it 97 who tipped the pass? i don't remember i was going crazy thinking the Broncos fumbled and gave the Patriots a gimme field goal for the win. It took me a minute to remind myself it was a 2 point conversion and a dead play.
But yes, if Taum threw it to Gronk they would've tied the game.

EDIT: meant to paste the link to NFL.com's analysis of the play, but the link won't copy. They have better angles, you can see that going to Gronk was not only a gimme, but really his only available option on the play.

After watching video again I'm pretty sure here's what happened. It was a one read play that was supposed to go to James White in the right flat. Brady stared him down. He was double covered. Brady panicked after getting his butt kicked all day. He knew where Edelman was supposed to be. And just fired, he was out of time.

He just never saw Makik Jackson, who made a great play sprinting from his DE position and tipped the ball up.

he never looked in Gronk's direction. They didn't have him as a viable receiver on the play. I'm sure lil Bill was sure Gronk was going to be in triple coverage. He wasn't.

For once YEA for the good guys :)

If your theory is correct, it means that was some Damn good play calling on defense.

Ex-NFL QB: Tom Brady made an inexcusable error on Pats' 2-point try

When Tom Brady needed to save New England's season on Sunday, he went to Rob Gronkowski.

On a fourth-and-10 with 1:34 left, Brady found Gronk for a 40-yard gain.

Four plays later, Brady needed to save the season again on a fourth-and-goal, and again, Brady went to Gronk.

However, the Patriots quarterback didn't go to Gronk on his final pass of the 2015 season, which has a lot people wondering what exactly happened.

Instead of trying to hit Gronk on the Patriots two-point attempt with 12 seconds left, Brady tried to hit Julian Edelman with a pass that got picked off by Bradley Roby.

So why didn't Brady throw it to Gronk?

The tight end appeared to be open.

Former NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck has a theory: He just thinks Brady made a huge mistake.

"It's a spot route. It's a 100 percent error by the quarterback on the two-point play. Not even debatable," Hasselbeck told WEEI in Boston on Monday. "You flash the corner to the spot. You're trying to run some traffic to out-leverage the defense. Denver, I think, (messed up), because they end up doubling the flat. That's the last thing you want to do, is double the flat. But they're afraid to get out-leveraged so they both run after him. You then have inside leverage, with (Shiloh) Keo on Rob Gronkowski."

Gronk was single-covered on the play and not throwing to him was an "inexcusable" error by Brady, according to Hasselbeck.

"Gronk is the No. 2 guy in the progression," Hasselbeck said. "It goes flat, corner, spot. For whatever reason, Brady just skips him. He skips him. It's an easy throw to Gronkowski and the game is tied. It's inexcusable at that point."

Although Hasselbeck seems to be insinuating that Brady "choked" on the big play, he would like everyone to know that he doesn't think Brady's a choker.

"Now, listen, I don't think he choked," Hasselbeck said. "I just think that if it were (Broncos quarterback) Peyton Manning who had the type of game that Brady had, you guys would be talking about him choking."

Hasselbeck's basically saying that if Manning had put up Brady's numbers, then Manning would be grilled for playing a poor game.

The bad news for Brady is that he's now going to have all offseason to think about why he didn't throw it to Gronk.

I don't know how he can say Denver messed up by doubling the flat. That's where the first read was supposed to go.

After Brady saw it was doubled, he panicked, didn't look at Gronk, he just fired it to where Eldelman was. It might have gotten there if Jackson didn't make a great play.

But he's right, Brady panicked with the rush coming, and choked

I don't mind it at all. The usual suspects are usually defending everything Brady and the Pats do. During the game on Sunday, Simms described a rushed throw that fell 3ft short of White on the right flat as... "Purposeful" saying Brady meant to do that. He was purposely inaccurate lol.

agreed. doubling the flat worked to perfection. If the second guy isn't there, it's an easy conversion

I hear what you're saying, but if Brady doesn't miss the read and calmly lobs the ball in to a wide open Gronkowski, we're all talking about how Denver made a mistake, how can they not double Gronk, we all know that's where it's going, yada yada. You can't double everyone. I think Hasselback is saying you don't want to double the flat because he's not running an end zone route, he's the one guy who would have to break a tackle or outrun a defender to score - though we certainly see guys waltz into the end zone after making that catch if it's not covered well.

QB's don't see wide open WR's all the time when the pressure is on .

How many people remember Jimmy Orr jumping up and down, uncovered in the end zone
