the original 3 year $21 million is actually the right dollar amount but instead of 3 years make it 2...

$13 Million for 2016 w/ $8 Million in 2017 (stipulation in 2nd year if named starter gets an additional bonus {signing bonus} $5 Million) but if in 2017 the Jets decide Petty is the starter, Fitz has his $8 Million for a backup...

2016 salary fully guaranteed...

The Jets being stingy because of his past failures, leave the door open to make a move after this upcoming season while ensure a veteran presence whom could be the starter in 2017...

honestly if he doesn't sign by draft weekend then the obvious should be trade Geno, start Petty and draft another mid round quarterback

heard the Jets like Dak Prescott with his current off the field situation believe DUI it might of dropped his stock some to where he is no longer a 4th rounder, how far will he drop? 5th, 6th, 7th or free agency?

if Fitz doesn't re-sign by draft weekend then moving on is a must and Geno would be the most experienced quarterback on the roster and would be foolish to trade/release him unless they sign someone like RG3 to compete with Petty and said prospect...

The bigger question is, how are we signing these guys? We have 2.3 in cap space, the 2d linemen we just signed, and potentially Fitz. That's 3 contracts that aren't on the books yet. Where's the money coming from?

Cutting Brick...is 9 Million alone... Possibly Trading Mo is 15.7 Mill..... One or both of those things will happen, for sure!

Breno also, every bit helps

I'd rather cut Breno and restructure Brick.... We have to have one of those guys on the roster... Rumors are the staff like Brent Qvale for RT but then we have no LT.

WE can't cut both, but if we did I think Breno is another 4.3 Mill...

I'm not sure trading mo is happening. Chandler Jones is a cheap one year rental for a 2nd rounder, mo is expensive and requires a17mil5 year deal.
If he is traded, that solves the issue, but I feel its doubtful.

Dumping 2 good starting o linemen to sign Fitz, doesn't make sense. Then Fitz has to play with worse protection.

Maybe restructuring brick will happen, combined with cutting breno for qvale. But I'm not thrilled at that either.

Breno was pretty bad last year..... Qvale can't be worse... So I am ok with Breno going.. and Brick may get cut depending on what goes down in the draft.

if they sign fitz to a deal with a $12MM signing bonus on a 3 year deal and cut ties after 1 year, wouldn't the dead money cap hit be $8 million (taken all next year or split over 2 years)? not sure i'd call that a small hit

The 8 million would be split over the two remaining years, has to do with the June first cuts. It all depends on when the cut is made.

The Jets will have quite a bit of money available in 17. Cutting Fitz isn't the goal, it's getting him Starting QB type money in 16, when he will be starting, like 12-13 million, and if he is a back up/mentor in 17-18 it won't be a bank breaker.

Not a cap expert by any means, but Jackie Davidson is. I'm sure she can come up with a schedule that will make Fitz happy in 16, for the agents sake make it sound like he won, but in reality the Jets can walk away.

Lots of ways to do it, I just used signing bonus to make it simple. Can use roster bonus, an incentive clause, lots of stuff. That's why she makes the big bucks

I suspect before April 1st is here ( in some cases big roster bonus' are due), a lot of long time players for the Jets may be gone not making the fans happy.

Not saying this will happen, but people like D'Brick will be asked, not for a restructure, but a major pay cut, or released. Breno will be cut IMO. Mangold counts 8.6 against the cap, if released they save it all. Wilkerson might be traded very cheaply, not saying he will, but he could be. Same with Mangold. Folk saves 2.1

This isn't only about paying Fitz (They'll have to pay somebody starting money, IMO starting Smith is just tanking the season) It's about clearing over paid money off the books. Don't think we as fans are going to like how it happens, but it seems like the free lunch is over

I think Mangold gets restructured... maybe add a year and save 2-3 mill over the next 2...

Brick gets a paycut or is released.... so we either save 5 Mill or 9 mill on Brick alone.

If Brick takes a pay cut Breno is gone so thats another 4.3 Mill...

I think you see Brandon Marshall get an extension to reduce this years Cap hit. Guarantee him money next year with nothing guaranteed on the extended year(s)... Could give us another 2-3 Mill.

These moves alone give us 12 Mill.

theJetsblog -- New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles said both the front office and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick have a right to be uncompromising in contract negotiations.

"It's a business, it takes time," Bowles said at the AFC coaches breakfast during annual meetings. "It's March. We're not playhing right now so everyone has a right to be stubborn."

Jets owner Woody Johnson said on Monday his message to Fitzpatrick, who nearly led the Jets to the playoffs with a 10-6 record, is to "Come back to the Jets." GM Mike Maccagnan said the team's priority is to bring back Fitzpatrick. However, both sides appear to be far apart in negotiations.

"We're working through it," Bowles said. "It'll work out for the best...We want to sign Fitz back but we have a plan in place it case [we don't]."

That backup plan could include free agent Robert Griffin III, the former Washington Redskins quarterback who has twice visited with the Jets in addition to meeting with the Cleveland Browns.

Bowles called Griffin a "bright young guy" and also said Geno Smith is an option to start should the team not re-sign Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick, 33, threw for 3,905 yards, 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in his first season with New York last year.

There is no absolute deadline for when the Jets must re-sign Fitzpatrick, Bowles said, and added that even if the Jets don't re-sign him, then it is not a step back.

"You want everything to work out fine," Bowles said, "but if it doesn't, you want to have plans B, C and D in place as well."

I don't like plan A let alone B-D. Well I do like Petty but if they feel he is not ready then not for the start of the year.

one problem Macc isn't the type a guy to restructure adding more guarantees on extension so expect:

  • Breno is cut...
  • Wilkerson currently being shopped and is most likely gone via trade...
  • Brick will be kept this year at his current salary but next year they will cut him or he retires...
  • Mangold & Marshall contract's are non-guaranteed (both contracts can open up cap space by fronting the money into a signing bonus) but expect both to play out their current contracts this year... like Brick, Mangold under contract for next season, his future is up in the air at this point... I believe Marshall is entering his final season in the NFL win, lose or draw he is done...
  • the Jets will draft potential -- tackle, end/linebacker, center and possibly guard (some prospects are undrafted potential) but the Jets look to get younger this draft and moving forward big changes are in the works...
so right now trading Mo will open up cap space to re-sign Fitz... Breno should be cut unless the team feels he can rebound from a career worst season... on the bright side they can replace him during the season with Qvale...

I agree but personally I think Mangold and Marshall are good for 2 more years so you extend out guaranteed money to next year, Both are under contract next year none of it guaranteed, give them an extra year. This is where the non guaranteed money is. and you cut them then.

since they are under contract for 2 years now no need to extend them... both years for both of them are non-guaranteed...

Since both years will be productive, I think, the reason to give that extra year and guarantee next years money is to create cap space for this year.

still don't see the need at the moment... the Jets are listening to offers for Wilkerson, guarantee he will be gone come draft time opening up the cap space $15 million for this upcoming season... not only more than enough to re-sign Fitz but able to add a couple pieces from free agency...

if we need more then players like Breno are the first to go...

as for next off season being able to cut/release free in clear: Brandon Marshall, Nick Mangold, Brick Ferguson and open the cap space from $15 million to $46 million is a better deal whereas the free agents available would be more sufficient for us to use that new money on those acquisitions... not saying any of those three are going to be cut, but two of the three may retire...

Players in 2017 off season that could be options:

Luke Jockel, LT Jax
Chance Warmack, OG Tenn.
Eric Reid, FS 49ers
Alec Olgetree, OLB Rams
William Gholston, DE Bucs
Marquess Wilson, WR Bears
Keenan Allen, WR Chargers
Justin Hunter, WR Titans
Le'Veon Bell, RB Steelers
etc...

next years free agency is loaded with talent and a scout like Maccagnan would be drooling at the chance to steal a piece or pieces from around the league...
