Fitzpatrick Thread -- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jets agree to 1-year, $12M deal

Don't spend money on mediocre QBs ... I'd rather have a terrible season with a young QB; at least then you can get a good draft pick and have a chance to get a better QB prospect. Otherwise you just tread water forever.

Pro Football Rumors -- The Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick remain far apart in talks to bring the veteran back for a second season.

Fitzpatrick is still eyeing a contract commensurate with the league’s established starters at $16MM per season or close to that, per Jason Cole of Bleacher Report (video link), who reports the Jets’ best offer toward the 33-year-old currently sits at $7MM AAV.

Cole also reports the Jets’ offer could be approaching $9MM per year when factoring in incentives, which goes along with a New York Post report from earlier today. Fitzpatrick’s camp has resisted this idea.

Gang Green’s offer to retain Fitzpatrick is now coinciding with top-end backup money after Chase Daniel and Robert Griffin III signed accords worth upwards of $7MM per season. Both will obviously compete for their respective team’s starting job, but their salaries have created a range that previously didn’t exist for veteran QBs.

That appears to be Fitzpatrick’s floor after he set a career high with a Jets single-season record 31 touchdown passes last season. Fitz, though, completed just 59.6% of his passes, which represented a considerable drop from his previous seasons.

Although the Jets do not view Geno Smith as a viable option to reclaim his starting job as his contract year approaches, Gang Green isn’t concerned at this juncture about its quarterback situation, per Cole. He expects the Jets to pursue a trade for another team’s backup, with Mike Glennon‘s name emerging soon after.

Glennon’s name has surfaced lately as a player that seems to be making its way onto the trade block as the Buccaneers backup’s contract year nears. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports the Jets have indeed researched Glennon as a possible solution and are scanning reserves around the league in case they cannot re-sign Fitzpatrick, whom they want to retain.

It won’t take a first-round pick to pry Glennon from Tampa Bay, Mehta reports, and a second-rounder would exceed any compensatory value the career 58% passer would produce. The Jets may not be willing to go that far, however.

Muhammad Wilkerson would probably be a way for the Jets to escape giving up a second-rounder in this potential deal, Mehta writes, but the Bucs already have Gerald McCoy signed to a top-end defensive tackle contract (seven years, $95.2MM). The Bucs’ willingness to fork over $40MM+ guaranteed for the Jets’ franchise-tagged stalwart may be a stumbling block here.

No, he made an offer he feels comfortable with. If no one else offers Fitz more, what is he going to do? Retire? If Fitz really believes in himself, then he should sign a one year deal, and prove he can put back to back years together. Then he would get 22 next off season.

And really that's probably the way things work out. Obviously, Fitz does believe he's worth more money or else the Jets would have signed him by now.

But I don't see many teams in a rush to sign him. So given the situation, the best thing Fitz could do for himself is to sign a 1 year deal making that 7 million. If he puts up another season like 2015? Then, I would certainly think that the Jets would be on the hook for a lot more money if they want Fitz back for 2017. If he bombs and plays the Fitz of old? Then, I guess the Jets had him pegged all along.

That certainly, IMO, is probably the most logical thing Fitz could do.....

yes it is and that is what been offered... he is not worth more and we shouldn't pay more then that. The Market has spoken ...his agent is blowing smoke up his ASS hoping Mac has a brain freeze and will offer more... Time to cut bait trade with browns for McC.
griffin got 6.75 million guaranteed money with a chance to make as much as 22 million if he hits all his incentives..

fitzpatrick is what we are calling a "bridge QB" but is griffin?? the browns haven't named griffin the starter next season.. i'm quite sure mccown would like to believe he'll have some say in that.. hell, even if they do move mccown their starting QB certainly could end up being the 2nd pick in the draft this coming april..

so wouldn't griffin 's contract more accurately be described "top tier backup QB" money?? yes he might start next season for the browns or never take a regular season snap for them..

that ain't fitzpatrick's situation if he's re-signed by the jets.. he would/will come into camp as the undisputed starter..

To me the Browns are the biggest loser in the NFL & we are talking about getting QB's from the browns & comparing Qb needs/contracts with that team. Does not make me warm & fuzzy? NO It is what it is but we got to better then that.

I am looking for growth & I hope our QB can help provide this. If not lets play without a QB LOL....I am just kidding...I think LOL

BusinessInsider -- Much has been made about the number of quarterbacks the Cleveland Browns have used in recent years, but when it comes to the NFL Draft, no team has taken more shots than the New York Jets over the last 16 years.
From 1999 through 2015, the Jets drafted ten quarterbacks, two more than the Browns during the same period. At the other end, the Dallas Cowboys have drafted just three quarterbacks since 1999.
On the other hand, the Browns have drafted four quarterbacks in the first round of the last 16 drafts, more than any other team and something they are expected to do again this year. Meanwhile, five teams have not selected a quarterback in the first round during this time period, including the Cowboys, Chiefs, Saints, Seahawks, and Patriots.

LOL Well that was true with the Steelers & Unities ...but no sometimes you pick up bad players sometimes you let go good players & sometimes you do both all the time. that helps make for a bad team

The Cards would be in the same boat as the Jets but for Warner & Palmer.....not good in the QB draft but great in the FA pickup

Mac has only drafted Petty so can't say he's 0-1, 1-0.. Right now he is ?-? Petty hasn't had the chance to show anything yet... He will and then we can decide if he is 0-1 or 1-1

Nope I don't agree Petty is a huge project... Project sure... I always said Petty has everything you want in a QB he is Smart, Quick release, Above average Arm, Good size and athletic.... Now he needs to learn to play an NFL PRo Style Offense. that's the question.... But what most seem to forget i Gaily doesn't run that traditional Pro style offense. He runs a HYbrid offense that is close to what Geno and Bryce did in College than what Andrew Luck did at Stanford and with Indy..... So yes a learning curve but I always said 2 years tops to get him where we need him to be and a small shot he could be ready year 2. Aaron Rodgers ran the same offense as Petty at Cal in college. GB had said he was ready year 2 but had to wait for Favre to move on till year 4 to start. The reason he dropped was because of him running that spread O in college. Petty and Rodgers skill sets are very similar coming out of college.... Petty's back injury that he played thru hi senior year is why he dropped. He should have been a 1st rounder. Not saying he will be Rodgers but he has the potential to be the answer and NO he is not a huge project.

Right. That's why I said he's ?-1. We're not sure if he's 1-1 or 0-1.
