I'm speculating that they are telling the truth? That has to be one of the most bizarre comments I have ever seen. Because you refuse to veer from your "all the players hate Geno" narrative, you've created this fiction that any player will just out-and-out lie to "toe the party line." I think that personal integrity is important to most people, Decker and Marshall included. As was pointed out above, there are times that players will give a vague and ambiguous response, or even a "no comment" if they don't want to say what they really think. That's what they would do if mandated by management as you suggest. But to out-and-out lie, and in explicit detail? No, I don't think most players would be do that. And there is nothing vague or ambiguous in what they said regarding Geno. So, maybe you should stop casting aspersions on their integrity just to hold on to the narrative to which you've become so attached.

I believe what the players say about Geno. They may not like him as much as Fitz, but I doubt they were trying to take a stand. Surely they watched his play vs Buffalo in the 4th quarter when it mattered.

I believe it was vacation.
Decker was confirmed by sources as missing voluntary otas because of Fitz. Then when he returned, he and Marshall lost their smiles and gave unemotional company responses, almost identical to each other. Personally, it sounds like they were given a talking to by coach or someone.

I have never suggested that you are stupid, but c'mon, can you deny that you are being stubborn about this? And btw, I do not consider "stubborn" to inherently be a bad thing, and you certainly have a right to believe what you want to believe. I do find your condescension irksome, as though by disagreeing with your view of the situation I am somehow living in fantasyland. We each have our opinions and time will tell who is correct. I do believe that teams will instruct players not to speak on a particular topic and to avoid saying things that could cause locker room strife, but that is a far cry from telling them what they actually should say, and I do not believe that that teams try to go that far, I do not believe that the NFLPA would let them get away with it if they did, and I do not believe that a Brandon Marshall of all people, would follow a team-provided script. Again, yes, he would avoid saying negative things if he were asked to, but no way would he give such an extended positive commentary on Geno and talk about how proud he is of him for how much he has grown both on and off the field since and from last year's incident, unless it was what he truly thought.

Look up public comments by patriot players. They're mostly love fore live the same statements. Teams have pr classes for players as rookies and instruct them constantly how to handle the media. Many players make random statements, but pr lines are certainly prevalent in the nfl.

i'm sorry, wut?? they absolutely let the initial reports (especially decker) linger before clarifying things.. please explain..

i have no problem seeing both sides of a debate.. just because i feel relatively convinced about something doesn't mean i'm not open to suggestions.. & if it turns out i'm wrong on this, i'll absolutely say as much..

but if you're honest with yourself, you will acknowledge you have stonewalled my opinions on the situation as much as i have yours..

I've never disputed that, but that doesn't encompass everything a player says. Read the extended quote from Marshall that I pasted earlier. There is no way that those are PR talking points, they are too personal and too detailed. I think there is no getting around that Marshall said those positive things about Geno and he meant them.

I'm definitely on your side of this debate -- unless these guys were afraid of getting cut (obviously not the case) they went WAY too far in their praise of Geno to simply be "towing the company line".

Now, does that mean all their praise is legitimate? Of course not -- they may simply be trying to build a teammate up in the hopes it makes a tangible difference. I just don't see how one week you're sitting out to make a blatant statement against management, only to turn around and praise the player you were boycotting against. Like I said, it's not like their job was in jeopardy or anything . . .

I've said from square one these guys were idiots if they stayed home in support of Fitz, so now that they've given alternative reasons I'm going to believe them instead of some convoluted theory that's completely based on assumptions . . .

Don't see the relevance of #887, but I was referring to #878, where I read this:

The report that claimed he skipped the first week of OTAs as a sign of solidarity to unsigned quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick quickly spawned a full-on spectacle — one that thrust the Fitzpatrick standoff back into the spotlight and threatened to fracture relationships within the Jets locker room.
But after dismissing the report on Wednesday, Decker assured reporters that, even though he wants Fitzpatrick to return, he supports Smith, too.
“I think Geno understands that’s what it wasn’t about,” he said, referring to the narrative that he tried to “send a message” to ownership by no-showing.

You don't have to believe him, but at least he's on record "dismissing reports" that he was "sending a message" for Fitz.

I'm not aware of any times he confirmed an intention to boycott, which is why I said that's been based on assumptions all along . . .
