Fitzpatrick Thread -- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jets agree to 1-year, $12M deal

Well, we are all going to find out first hand about Ryan Fitzpatrick's bluff and if it is real. The Jets are not willing to pay him what he wants and I don't even really believe they could afford his demands anyway. the Jets are very cash strapped right now. That is Mac's fault. But it's definitely go or die time for Fitz. The Jets should have set a deadline of the beginning of TC.

just because the fans & the media don't know of an already existing deadline doesn't necessarily mean one is not in place..

i completely agree..

fitzpatrick has had the whole summer off & as far as i'm concerned, the start of training camp (or at the most a day or so after) is time to get back to work..

i'm not giving away any secrets about how little use i have for smith as QB & his off the field track record.. but the show must go on at some point & smith would be the next man up.....

As much as I agree with you and hate Geno Smith, you're right. There comes a time when the Jets need to move on. If Fitz does not sign a deal and start training with the team come the first day of training camp, then I say the Jets MUST move on, and yes, that would mean Geno would start. I shutter to think of such an abomination.

But lets be real about this....

If Mac goes with Geno Smith and he starts playing like absolute shit he has always? I believe there's very real concern for the fan base turning on Mac and Bowles. This could spell disaster for their careers in NY. They would find themselves entrenched in a firewstorm of shit and criticism like has never been seen. A move of this nature could ultimately be one the main reasons for their dismissal in time.

Here is why I am siding with Mac no matter what happens...We don't have the money to sign Fitz to what he wants. We are still offering him more than any team would. If he doesn't want to play for what we can give him which then on 1st day of TC I say see ya and let Geno play. I think Chan can help Geno be successful or I hope he can. And if not, then we let Petty or Hack take their lumps for half the season. Fitz makes me believe we have a chance this season so my 1st choice is him, but I also know Fitz has never won a meaningful game so I don't have much faith in him either. I just have more faith in Fitz than Geno, Petty and a rookie.

And for me, this is all about the GM's deficiencies. It is the GM's job to make the team more talented each and every season until they win the SB. Mac did NOT do that this offseason. He confronted very specific needs and even then it wasn't a great effort at filling them. He completely ignored the Jets biggest area of need on offense - the OL. He also spent like a drunken sailor last offseason and left this team cash strapped this offseason. He also failed to trade MO and now we stand to get at best a 3rd round compensatory pick for a guy that is clearly worth a lot more. I don't care that some mesomeone voted him the exec of the year. This offseason is very much UNACCEPTABLE and it's going to show on the field. I'm tired of one good season (not great) followed by one bad season. It's nonsense. This team needs to get BETTER each and every season and eventually win the SB. To me Mac is just another retread GM that does the same stupid stuff as Tanny and Terry Bradway did. I see the same patterns happening again.

& i really like both drafts mac has had & I definitely believe the jets are a better team right now then the were this time last year..

i see fitzpatrick getting us back to 10-6 which should mean a playoff spot.. next season's schedule be damned..

I appreciate your optimism and you know I respect your take on the team, but for me this is all about the schedule. Our schedule for the first 7 games is as bad as I've ever seen the Jets have. Besides a team we haven't beaten in two seasons now, ALL of our opponents are playoff teams. Like has been stated so many times by others, and I bears repeating, the Jets usually beat one winning team per season. This seasons schedule just does not bode well for this team. But the discussion aside, will you take on Mac change after this season if what I think will happen HAPPENS? Because I really do not believe Mac is any different than the other failures that this city had and I believed in so much.

Since Macc was hired, every position group on the field is better than it was two seasons ago. Minus special teams(Quigley.)
Depth for the entire team is better.
4-12 to 10-6 is better.
The offense was ranked 10th,higher than it's been in what? a decade, two decades??
Defense ranked 4th with all players in Bowles system for the 1st time ,and it should be even better this year.
The biggest problem going into year two is the QB position.If someone told me at this time last year, that the Jets season in 2016 hinges on Ryan Fitzpatrick i wouldn't of believed it. The reality is that Fitzpatrick is the best option, right now,for the Jets.
An extended hold out/not signing and G. Smith shows growth, maturity, an expanded/higher football IQ. Maybe Fitzpatrick isn't the best option going forward. Now that is asking an awful lot, putting all the eggs in Genos basket but right now that's where the Jets are at. Minus signing Fitzpatrick to a cap crippling contract.

as for mac, i don't see my opinion changing after next season.. while working with far less cap room he IMO has improved his 10-6 team..

i think we finally got lucky & landed a big boy GM.. i'm cautiously optimistic on our HC as well..

both sides want fitzpatrick re-signed & what are both sides options?? fitzpatrick waits/hopes for another team to offer him much less then the jets have apparently offered?? even if someone's starter goes down before or during the season, who's has the cap space at this point to give fitzpatrick the kind of money he's looking for??

the jets, looking at by all accounts, a big boy schedule is giving the ball back to smith with a team that has about a two year window with its older stars??

i absolutely cannot see bowles/mac putting their jet careers in the hands of the second biggest dope on the team..

Pretty much agree. Just hope Ftiz isn't over playing his hand, and forcing the Jets to take the offer off the table. The alternative is nauseating.
