If Healthy, I truly believe Milliner can be our # 2 corner. I know that's unpopular, and a huge if, but I believe that

Even the announcers mentioned that the ny jets offense had nothing to worry about, they liked very good, and that it was the d that looked off.

We have a ton of turnover this year and everyone has to be prepared for growing pains. We need to be realistic, while being excited that this staff has made some impressive moves and deserves our confidence.

The Mauldin penalty was real border line on a high energy rookie, I'm fine with that penalty.
Richardson had the dropsies and I don't expect him to make the team.
A lot of things need context.

Mauldin looks awesome. Most excited I've been about a young OLB since Abraham. I expect him to make an impact as a rookie. He will get more of those penalties though.

Lets see, new GM, New HC, new system, new coaches, new players, va QB namd a day ago NO reps with 1st team, very plain game plan... what am I missing?

I know my moniker is SOJ but I will give the benefit of the doubt and wait till 3rd PS game to make a judgement.

BTW - you all should listen to HC presser on Jets.com he sees what we saw and he promised to fix it. Give the guy a chance... cultural changes take time.

DETROIT — The Jets were all sorts of bad in their 23-3 loss to the Lions Thursday night in—all together now—a preseason opener.

The starting defense played two series and gave up a touchdown and a field goal. The first-team offense played just one series with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick; they managed a field goal for their only points before Fitzpatrick handed the keys to rookie Bryce Petty the rest of the way. All told, the Jets were outgained, 428 yards to 123, and they managed just six first downs to the Lions' 26.

"I'm not concerned," Bowles said. "It's the first preseason game. We've got a lot of tackling to do. If the first group had played all game on both sides of the ball and we got killed like that, I'd be a little more concerned. If this was the third preseason game, we'd be a little bit concerned. But we've got a lot of work to do."

Let's break down who played well and who didn't.

STUDS

RB Chris Ivory: Ivory pounded out 25 yards on six carries during the first-team offense's opening drive, and he ran with the controlled fury that defines his approach, which seems to savor drawing contact. It's obvious Ivory's still got it. Wisely, Bowles didn't leave Ivory in beyond that.

DE Sheldon Richardson: Richardson only played a few series with the backups, but he made his presence felt in short order by absolutely pummeling one of the Lions' backup offensive lineman. If anything, Richardson showed what the Jets will be missing once he's forced to serve his suspension for the first four weeks of the regular season.

CB Marcus Williams: Battling for a roster spot, Williams was credited with four tackles, two passes defensed, and an interception. At camp earlier in the week, Williams got reps as the backup nickel. There are still more than two weeks until roster cuts, but Williams making it difficult for the coaches to ignore him.

DUDS

ILB Demario Davis: Davis got juked out of his shoes by Ameer Abdullah, the Lions' shifty rookie running back. But Davis was also beaten badly on a catch by Lance Moore, and on Golden Tate's 35-yard touchdown catch, Davis and safety Marcus Gilchrist had what Bowles described some kind of miscommunication that allowed Tate to both catch the ball and to scurry into the end zone.

S Marcus Gilchrist: Gilchrist had that aforementioned mix-up with Davis on the Tate touchdown, but he also got whistled for illegal hands to the face during Abdullah's sensational 45-yard run.

WR Walter Powell: In the third quarter, Powell attempted to let a punt bounce into the end zone. But as he engaged with a Lions player who had raced downfield, he put himself in position to have the ball knocked right to him as the Lions tried to prevent the punt from reaching the end zone. Powell had no choice but to catch the ball, at which point he was trapped inside the 5-yard line, where the Jets took over.

The Powell play near the goal line was actually an excellent play. Obviously whoever wrote this does not understand the rule there.

I agree. The announcer was complaining too initially until Buttle corrected him. Once the defense touches the ball, the returner can return the ball without any worry. I think even if he fumbles, it's not an issue.

I was just re-watching some of the game. Before the middle of the 3rd quarter Petty had 2 receiver drop the ball and one run the wrong route. A couple more he just missed the receiver. After mid 3rd every bum on the planet was out there. Overall the kid really didn't look that bad for not having a "feel" for those receivers. Reps and more reps needed.

Erin Henderson could miss a week, but avoids serious knee injury

While’s it’s certainly worse than leaving a game healthy, the news wasn’t that back for Jets linebacker Erin Henderson.
According to Dom Cosentino of NJ.com, Henderson suffered a grade-two sprain of his MCL, and is expected to miss about a week of practice.
He suffered the injury last night against the Lions, and it looked like it might have been worse at the time. But if the time frame is accurate, he could be back on the field for the third preseason game against the Giants on Aug. 29.
Henderson’s competing for a roster spot with the Jets after his career was derailed by a series of alcohol-related problems during his time with the Vikings. He said in April when he signed with the Jets he was actually grateful for the DUI arrests, since it led him to go to rehab to get his life back together.
Fortunately, he appears to be back on track, and the good news is this injury won’t be the thing to stop his comeback attempt.

What Jets revealed about their offense in first look

It would be foolish to read too much into anything that happened in Thursday’s preseason opener, but the one drive by the Jets’ starting offense offered a clue as to what this team wants to do with the ball.

Quite simply: Run, run, run.

Rex Ryan may be in Western New York, but Ground and Pound lives on with the Jets. The starters were in for nine plays, and six of them were runs. Chris Ivory carried it every time, gaining 25 yards. The running game was the lone silver lining the Jets could take away from a 23-3 loss to the Lions, and it gave fans a clue what Chan Gailey wants to do with his offense.

“I think that’s going to be our makeup,” guard Willie Colon said. “We want to establish the run early and set the tone. I think we were able to do that.”

A big part of that was the offensive line, the only group to get praise from coach Todd Bowles after the game. The Jets had the No. 3 rushing offense in the NFL last year, so it should not be surprising to see this unit do well. But it is breaking in new left guard James Carpenter and right guard has been in flux this offseason as Bowles talked about competition. That competition appears over, though, with Colon the winner.

The line opened big holes for Ivory to run though as the Jets marched 41 yards on nine plays, converting a fourth down along the way. The Jets settled for a field goal after a failed pass on third-and-1.

“I thought we came out, we were physical, we ran the ball well,” quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said. “I wish I would have thrown a little bit better pass on the last one, completed it and we would have stayed on the field and got seven points. But I thought it was nice to get out there and establish the line of scrimmage and be physical up front like we did. I think it went smooth in terms of getting on the same page with Nick [Mangold] up front and the guys and just the communication in and out of the huddle.”

Fitzpatrick replacing Geno Smith at starting quarterback probably has not altered the game plan very much. All indications were the Jets were going to be a run-first team with Smith, who had 41 turnovers in two years. The formula for the Jets is simple: play good defense, run the ball and hope the quarterback does not turn it over.

“Fitz is a veteran, so I think we will be balanced out just like we started and I think we have good receivers and I think we have a great running game,” Ivory said. “It’s just about balancing the two out and having both of them doing good. Both receivers and the run game haven’t been good, so I think if we establish that, it’ll be a balanced offense.”

Backup running back Bilal Powell also had a nice night. His 19-yard run was the Jets’ longest play, a telling statement of how poor the passing game was. The Jets gained just 56 yards through the air, letting rookie Bryce Petty play the rest of the game after the first series.

Bowles said it’s too soon to being to worry about the Jets’ poor showing.

“I’m not concerned,” Bowles said. “I mean, it’s the first preseason game. We got a lot of tackling to do. If the first group had played all game on both sides of the ball and we got killed like that, I would be a little more concerned, but if this was the third preseason game, you’d be a little bit concerned. But we got a lot of work to do.”

Players late in the game that i noticed were #50 Barnes Penn St. He looked active and around the ball a lot. #54 Lattimore, he's going to earn a spot on this team, i believe, and carve out a niche for himself on third downs.

Thank you very much Hobson. Likewise, always a pleasure. I took a hiatus from posting during the offseason and summer, but will get back in the swing of things now.

So, I finally got a chance to watch the entire game and yes we did look like garbage. I will give the team a mulligan with all the nonsense they had to deal with this week and the fact they are just coming together this year period. However; they have to prove and show better in the pre-season games two and three, or I will start to worry.

Petty to me didn't look all that bad. Yes he was timid and you can tell that but he hung tuff. His receivers didn't help him at all with the 3-4 dropped passes. You can see he has to sit a learn for atleast a year to be ready to go but this time is great for him. I am still holding out hopes his learning curve will improve greatly and he will be ready by game 1 of this year but I realize that is a pipe dream.

Only time will tell what his learning curve will be. Whether he'll be ready by next year or will it be mid-season or even game 1 of this year (doubt that once again)! What alarmed me is they didn't even let him live alittle out there. I'm not talking about running all over the field or throwing bombs all over the place but something atleast. If I'm correct, he didn't throw not one pass over ten yards. It seemed as if it was one-two reads max and then throw it regardless. Hopefully this week he will be a lot more comfortable, look it and display alittle more of his talent.

Fitz and the first string offense did well. The o-line and running game looked good all game pretty much. Fitz arm is like string cheese but we'll work around it I guess or HOPE. That third down pass to Cumberland was a lame throw but hopefully it all comes together. The defense got pushed around all damn game but I'm sure Bowles and his DC will correct that and they will be ready to go next games. With Wilkerson not playing period and Richardson playing second team I guess that's what we were left with for that game.

The only reason i'am not over reacting with Jeremy Kerely playing with the threes is quite possibly the coaching staff is assessing how certain players perform in case of an injury to Jeremy. It provides a unique look at Enunwa, Owusu (who may play this Friday night) and any other WR that will be backing up # 11.

IMHO, there is a method to this madness every one is over reacting.

The other possibilty and it's something i have been stating for a while, JEREMY KERELY IS EXPENDABLE. Sure he's "ok", but we have players on the team that can replace him. If he can garner us a 3rd rounder or a package deal that can get us a young QB, why not?

I don't understand this over enfatuation on Kerely, he can be replaced.

Was listening to Ross Tucker's show this AM on NFL-Sirius, and his guest was commenting on what rookies stood out in their opening game. He mentioned Clark the DE from Michigan, Abdullah and LWilliams of Jets. I didn't think Williams did anything spectacular, but I don't study film for a living either. He said that Williams played all over the DL, played with power, leverage and speed and clearly is everything the Jets and the rest of the league (except 1st 5 teams in draft) thought he would be. Very good news indeed. I also thought Mauldin looked the part as well, and I could see him easily surpassing higher drafted rush OLBs like Ray. Williams and Mauldin could be the next generation of great Jet front 7 talent.
