Jets get LT Clady and Broncos 7th round pick

Gaileys offense is predicated to not need maulers up front he likes the people that can move. The pocket needs to be able to move and protect QB. This means alot less bull rushes per game from the big defensive lineman, this will help clady in those regards as opposed to having a statue back their like manning who forced clady to take those bull rushes snap after snap in denver.

Reach? He was going to be cut. That is indisputable. We gave up a pick for a guy that was going to be cut..

If he stays healthy, fine. But that's a huge if

Did John Elway tell you he was gonna cut him tomorrow if he didn't trade him?

Are you sure no one would have thrown a draft pick at him at some point and it was inevitable he would have been cut?

If he was cut, do you think the jets had the ability to sign him over 31 other teams?

What was your plan for LT?

It was not giving up a pick for a guy that was going to be cut. Not for a guy that missed 30 of the last 48 games. I would not have done that. Teams were not going to be lining up for this guy.

I would've addressed it in the draft, or in free agency

Who in free agency did you like? We're you prepared to turn over LT to a rookie? What if 3 or 4 LTs went before we picked? Who in the draft that you know will be there at 20 were you ready to hand the starting LT job to?

Yes, to a rookie. It's done all the time. The Giants are doing it now, the Jetd did it with Brick. I would not have made this trade

I could be completely wrong but all of these moves and pending moves have a domino like feel to them. The next domino to fall will be a Mo trade and then finally Fitz will be signed. Maybe I trust Mac's competence too much, but all of this seems to be part of a well thought out plan ...and Mac is sitting back and pulling the strings. He played the FA game last year with a bulging wallet, this year he's had to do with a pauper's purse. Both successfully, and this from a guy whose supposed strength is the draft. I think the next and continuing phase of the long term plan is for the draft to be our lifeline, and that is Mac's forte. I am very excited for future of this team, while enjoying competitive seasons in the meantime.

You can look at the injuries that way, or you can look at it this way: in eight seasons, Clady played all sixteen games in six of them. He suffered two serious injuries, and after the foot fracture, he made the pro bowl the following season. So he has shown durability overall, and the ability to bounce back from injury. The Jets made the best possible move to stabilize the LT position via FA. Great job by Maccagnan.

I would absolutely look at it that way, if the major injuries happened early in his career, or even in the middle. Older and injured is not a good combo

This was a good trade, plain and simple. Getting a potential starting LT for several years for moving down two rounds late in the draft is well, well worth it. Some say we gave up a sixth but the reality is Mac didn't want to net lose a pick and only have five and he succeeded. The next moves should be;

Mo gets traded next for an additional two picks.
A LT is picked in the first two rounds who starts at RT.
Fitz is signed.
Breno is cut.
An OLB is picked.
A MLB is picked.
A CB is picked.
A RB is picked.

Mac is set for next offseason with money to spend in free agency.

As much as many fans, including myself, want to find a replacement for Breno, I honestly don't think it's happening. Just a feeling there. I don't think the Jets want to throw a rookie there, either. Unless Qvale is really far along in his development.

Also, I don't believe Macc approaches the draft based on need. I think he views it as an opportunity to replenish youth all over the roster, by taking BPA. I may be wrong, but that's the impression I get.

We also have to keep in mind this is a guy they were going to cut. No way they were going into the season with two highly paid LTs on the roster

Yes and he would have been a guy several teams would have wanted. a 5th rd pick is nothing to guarantee getting him

Are people actually getting upset with losing a 5th Rd pick???

What percentage of 5th Rd picks are impactful players in the NFL? 10%?
What percentage are roster filler for a few years 40%?

I would guess at least half of 5th rounders have a shelf life of 2 years or less.

You're probably losing a very marginal player with a5th. I wonder what the success rate for a 7th vs a 5th is.

On a side note, does this mean we are drafting Mr Irrelevent this year?

This truly is a marvelous trade by Mac. How often do you get 4 time pro bowl OL that are still in their prime, for a 5th rounder and they accept a pay cut on the outset? This move is extremely low risk and very high reward. This deal could actually turn out to be a better trade than the Brandon Marshall trade. It has the potential to be better. Really the only risk we are talking about is Clady's two injury riddled seasons of 2013 and 2015. But in 2014 he was still a premier LT. A better player than Brick.

I said going into this offseason that Mac was going to have to earn his pay check during this offseason. I think thus far he has been better than last offseason. This really is an excellent move and every Jets fan should be excited for the offensive potential this season.

I like it/Don't like it.

Ok it is still too early to call but if we can win now I like it. If we are building to win in tow or three years I don't like it.

I still don't like what we are doing to win now but as I said lets see the rest first...as of today I would love us to build for the future.

I don't know if this was a great trade, but it was a necessary one. A 5th for Marshall was a great trade, but many fans hated it. Its a low risk, high reward trade. I'm happy we don't have to reach for a LT in the draft.

I like it. A huge roll of the dice, but if it works out, can be just as good as the Marshall trade. If the guy stays healthy, it's not like he's a serviceable LT, he's an awesome LT. Macc addressed a need, hopefully we recoup a 4th or 5th along with another pick for Mo.

For the most part it should be BPA. There's always some give and take in that situation however. If they get the extra picks, you have more room for BPA. If a position of need is there who's rated slightly lower than a position of non-need, then you go with position of need. If a stud like Leonard Williams is sitting there, you run the card to the podium. I suspect an OL or LB they like will be there at #20 and they'll take him.

This one here convinces me. To my knowledge, Walter from Walter football has never liked a thing the Jets have ever done.

Jets acquire OT Ryan Clady, 7th-rounder from Broncos for 5th-rounder

My apologies for this being several hours late. I was at a charity benefit tonight, and this trade took place as soon as I got there. I think we can all agree that NFL teams should be barred from making deals on Saturday night from now on. I think it would be better for everyone.

I want to keep complaining, but this trade is pretty logical for both teams. The Jets just lost D'Brickashsaw Ferguson - check out the disaster grade - and desperately needed to find a replacement because they were unlikely to land Jack Conklin at No. 20 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Broncos, meanwhile, were shopping Ryan Clady after signing Russell Okung, making this a perfect match.

Clady is one of the more talented blind-side protectors in the NFL. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to stay healthy. He has missed 30 games the past three seasons, including all of 2015 with a torn ACL. However, Clady has immense upside, and he actually never was absent for a single start prior to 2013. Given that the Jets barely gave up anything, this is a steal.

Denver, on the other hand, struck a ridiculously cheap deal with Okung to help with its financial difficulty. Getting rid of Clady will allow them to have enough money to trade for Colin Kaepernick. That's not much of a reward, but the fact remains that the Broncos had to do this to relieve their cap situation.

Grade for Jets - A
Grade for Broncos - B

April 9 Updates

Jets sign OT Ryan Clady (2 years, $16 million): A Grade
I graded the Ryan Clady trade for both the Jets and Broncos below, but what about the actual contract? Signing Clady to a new deal was part of the swap, so I think it deserves its own separate grade.

While the Jets earned an "A" in the actual trade, this signing deserves a lesser mark, though not by much. Clady has missed 30 games in the past two seasons and happens to be coming off a torn ACL, so $9 million annually is obviously not ideal compensation. However, this is just a 2-year term, so the Jets aren't really locked into him for that long. Also, Clady's durability issues could be exaggerated. Sure, 30 missed games in three years is a ton, but Clady had never been out of the lineup a single instance before that. Perhaps he's just had some bad luck. He's still only 29, so he can certainly turn things around, and if so, this contract will look like a bargain.

Update: This was initially reported at two years and $18 million, but as it turns out, it's really just a 1-year, $6 million contract with a $10 million option for 2017. Thus, this is a great, no-risk signing for the Jets that deserves an "A."
