Not sure if we'll carry a FB on the regular roster or not, but maybe, he has a shot at the practice squad.
I liked Chan Gailey's answer when he was asked if his system makes it important to carry a fullback on the roster.

I'm paraphrasing, but he basically said "we'll carry a fullback if one emerges who can help us win games, but not just so we can say we're carrying a fullback."

Then Gailey is a total IDIOT.

So, the guy who coached Fitzpatrick is an idiot. Geez, like a number of posters/media have said, Smith will have a quick hook. Gailey thinks there's upside in Smith in his offense and wants to see it play out. If Smith bombs, Fitz is in. Petty isn't part of the equation at this stage, and Simms is camp fodder. You sure do like going to extremes in your descriptions of people. I hope to read from you if/when you're ever proven wrong.

I think this is exactly our QB situation. I think Gaily want to see what he can do with Geno's talent, and Marshall, Decker, Amaro, Kerley, and Devin Smith...to go with Ivory, Stacy, Ridley, and Powell.

You're right there will be no excuses with the cast of skill players the Jets now have. Plus, we have an OC who has a system that is closer to what Geno had at WVU than Marty's WC system. If it doesn't work then Fitz can bridge to either Petty or another draftee. Let it play out, a whole lot of discussion at this juncture is pointless.

I know MJ tends to overreact, but this doesn't sit well with me either.

Our supposedly competent OC sees so much in Geno that he's willing to name his the "no-brainer" starter, but we're already acknowledging the kid will have a quick hook? What does that say about his ability as a talent evaluator? Wouldn't it make more sense to take the "no comment" route until given a chance to see what Geno can do on the field?

I'm not trying to play the role of Chicken Little -- I just wish they'd shown a little more restraint in their desire to puff up Geno's ego . . .

agreed. any discussions on the qb situation beyond the above is pointless till the preseason.

I listened to Gailey and to Bowles yesterday

They announced Geno Smith was the starter for now, for OTAs, for mini camp and the beginning of TC

Congrats, Geno and you adoring fan club of 4 here at JetsFansUnited

MAKE THAT 5 ON THE BANDWAGON!

I'd like to see Smith in a lower # than 89 or 84 ? He's a smaller burner WR, what about 1 ? The coolest # ever was 00 the center Otto from the Raiders.

Go Jets...Cyborg
1-9 are reserved for Quarterbacks, Punters and Kickers.

IMO 84 is fine.

Antonio Brown, Randy Moss and Roddy White seemed to be OK with it

It's not about anyone's ego. Since the new CBA was implemented in 2011, there's no more 2 a day practices, and there is a time limit on the length of time a practice can run. Reps are at a premium. If you have an all out competition, reps are split and chemistry suffers. Smith is healthy and has been reportedly doing a good job this offseason. Fitzpatrick won't see real action until late July. IMO, this announcement was a no brainer. Fitzpatrick already has plenty of reps in this offense and would be prepared to take over if necessary. Also, when I say quick hook, I mean Bowles isn't going to be married to Smith the way Rex was to Sanchez. I think the coaching staff believes that with Smith's arm talent/athleticism, the offense can reach it's full potential and they want to see it play out.

100 agree. I was thinking a number in the single digits or teens. Pretty sure he was 9 in college so I thought he would be 19 in the NFL. I'm not so sure 84 will be what he ends up with after some cuts.

I still feel you're ignoring the quote (or I'm making too big a deal about it).

IMHO, saying "Geno will get all the #1 reps" is not the same as "there is no QB competition". One says Geno will get every benefit of the doubt, the other says Geno's already won.

I realize nothing is official until players get on the field, and decisions can change over one practice. But as of now I'm not a fan of the road they're taking in regards to our QB situation, and I'll just have to hope my concerns end up unwarranted . . .

I think when you get all(majority) of the first team reps, there really isn't a competition. Geno will be throwing against Revis, while Fitzpatrick is throwing against McDougle.

Wait, Gaily said there is no QB conpetition and they never intended to have one in his eyes. That's exactly what he said. Regardless of reps, he said there is no way Geno loses his starting job between now and week 1 due to anything done in a camp or practice. That's pretty cut and dry. I don't even know why it is being debated anymore...I think the only chance he doesn't start week one is if he conpketely implodes in the preseason.

The Gailey press conference was especially enlightening for me.

I think if Jet fans would actually watch it, particularly those who have taken issue with the CS naming Geno the starter, they will at least understand that it was well thought out, even if they disagree. I can live with the CS doing things I disagree with if I at least get the impression it was well thought out and they have logical reasons.
