I mentioned this in the first round thread but my question was probably looked over with the back and forth. for some reason this kid reminds me of Bruce Irvin. I'll go look at his measurables.

Not a chance. You won't believe it even if you see it. Your mind is made up. The pick was bad, and the kid is a bust.

Just like Bowles is a bum.

Let the kid play a few games before we call him a bust. I trust Bowles and Mac to make the right calls

Surprising pick. But not a surprising position. We need an OLB. Lee is a first round pick from every person I've read. I'm willing to give the Jets the benefit of the doubt.

Me too. People are getting up in arms but we have no idea what the plan is. In addition, even if he's only a third down player, but he's an elite third down backer, then that's a success in my book. Getting to the QB and having speedy linebackers is what leads you to a great defense.

Leave it to Jets fans to complain that the Jets don't have guys who can get to the QB, then complain when the Jets take a guy who can get to the QB.

Lee played the Buckeyes' walkout linebacker working the wide side of the field. Jets head coach Todd Bowles said tonight he has the ability to play outside with the Green & White but will start out at inside 'backer. That role is fine with the newest Jet.
"I have played inside the box a pretty good amount at times. I'm working to be a better linebacker. I haven't played it that long, but I'm working to be the best linebacker I can possibly be.

So we drafted an undersized 4-3 OLB to play 3-4 ILB?

WTF?????

How bout we play him at NT instead!!

I just saw an interview he did with a retired Steelers CB on the NFLN and he looked small standing next to a Corner!

He was taller than Maurice Jones Drew (who isn't?), but he looked skinny compared to Drew!

HOW THE **** is this guy going to play inside linebacker or any linebacker in the 3-4 scheme?

we have gone from table scraps too shrimp toast in one day.

He looks to be a Deone Bucannon type that TB had in AZ.

I need time but as of now I don't like it except for the speed part. As far as the 4-3 I am a big fan of it

We needed speed at LB and Lee has that. We need someone to cover TE's and Lee does that.
I don't want to beat a dead horse, but there's a reason why you will have a hard time finding even one reputable mock draft that projected Darron Lee to a team that plays a base 3-4 defense. You can look at the most reputable mocks you can find; Mayock, Jeremiah, Casserly, Rang (CBS), Walter Football, whatever, and good luck finding one mock that projected Lee to anything but teams that run a base 4-3.

This was a weird pick for a team that runs a base 3-4 defense, thats why he was completely off my radar despite being a terrific player, and he is a terrific player, I am well aware of that, I just never even entertained the idea of the Jets drafting him, nor did anyone else.

I'm going to assume TB is smarter than you or I.

I like it. The speed and instincts are exactly what we need at LB. We finally have a LB who can cover and stay on the field for 3 downs. The NFL has become (is) a passing league with many offenses that spread you out, and if your LBs can't cover you will never have an elite defense. I have read a bunch of reviews on this pick and all have been extremely positive, the only naysayers are from fans on this site. To think two astute football guys would select a player who is a bad fit for their team is absurd. This is exactly the kind of player that will excel in TB's defense, and will only elevate the level of an already stout but slow defense.

this is the best post I've read about Lee. The NFL has changed. You need to keep up with the spread offenses and have speed at linebacker. People were clamoring for us to select Jaylon Smith if he was healthy and Myles Jack but Lee is bigger than both. No one said that they were undersized.

This isn't your father's NFL anymore. People are spreading the field, throw quick slants and run hurry ups. The big linebackers will be too big to play if the trend continues. I have my faith in Bowles and Mac. I am skeptical but I trust them more than I trust myself.

The analysts were saying how Bowles had a player of similar build in Buchanon in AZ. Reviewing his play will give us a better understanding on how Lee will be used. butterscotch, how was Buchannon for you guys?

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The quarterback was there for the taking. So were the dynamic outside linebacker with top-five talent and the blazing-fast wide receiver.

But the Jets opted for another choice: Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee.
At the point that general manager Mike Maccagnan and coach Todd Bowles were on the clock at No. 20, Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch, UCLA linebacker Myles Jack and Notre Dame wide receiver Will Fuller were available. So was Alabama inside linebacker Reggie Ragland.

But the Jets selected a player who not only is talented but versatile. Lee’s speed? Well, that’s just an added bonus.

“What intrigued us the most about him is, he’s a younger player but he’s very athletic,” Maccagnan said. “ . . . He brings the ability to improve our overall team speed.”

For the seventh straight year, the Jets took a defensive player in Round 1 of the NFL Draft.
The last time they drafted a linebacker from Ohio State? Vernon Gholston, the sixth overall pick in 2008. Jets fans hope Lee brings far more on-field production than his fellow Buckeye did.
Though Lee was listed as an outside linebacker at Ohio State, Bowles was quick to point out that the 6-1, 232-pounder will be an inside linebacker. He’ll play behind Erin Henderson to start but has the ability to be a three-down player. Lee also can play outside, the Jets said.
With the free-agent departure of Demario Davis (who went to the Browns), Lee will bring athleticism and speed to a linebacking corps that includes Henderson (Davis’ replacement) and longtime veteran David Harris.
At first glance, Lee appears to be undersized for the position. But Bowles made it clear that the Jets aren’t looking for the 21-year-old to bulk up. “He doesn’t have to be a 240, 250 linebacker,” he said. “That’s not what we were looking for.”

Bowles said they took Lee because he can go “sideline-to-sideline” and has good pass-coverage ability. That versatility and speed will be an asset against NFL offenses that like to spread out their opponents.
Though only a sophomore, Lee was a starting linebacker in 28 of 30 games for the Buckeyes. He trailed only Joey Bosa (the third overall pick Thursday night) in tackles for loss with 27 1⁄2 and quarterback sacks (12). A second-team Associated Press All-American in 2015, Lee had 147 career tackles, five pass breakups, 10 quarterback hurries and three interceptions.

“You knew on tape that he was a very fast linebacker,” Maccagnan said.
Said Bowles: “He makes us a lot faster.”

Lee, the fifth Ohio State player to be drafted in the Top 20 Thursday night, said he didn’t know the Jets would draft him, but he was happy they did.

“Honestly, I’m in shock because I could not believe [it] and all my dreams are finally coming true. It was just a great moment for me,” said Lee, a former Buckeyes teammate of Jets 2015 second-rounder Devin Smith. “I didn’t know anything, honestly. I just knew that I had a great visit, I thought that I connected with the coaches, especially [assistant head coach/linebackers coach Mike Caldwell] and Coach Bowles. It was just kind of a wait and see.”

No Wilkerson trade imminent. Despite the Jets’ attempts to trade defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, Maccagnan confirmed that it likely won’t happen before the draft is over.
