Might as well keep Harvin

Unless things start taking a drastic turn for the better with these free agents, and as we've discussed ad nauseam, the free agents worth signing to big deals are dwindling by the minute, then it probably behooves us to pick up Harvin's 10 million dollar option and toss his speed into the slot.

By now everyone should be aware of the fact that we cannot do what Idzik did last year and essentially sit on our cap space. By league rules we are mandated to spend a significant amount of that money this year, so we have to spend it on someone, otherwise its confiscated by the league and we have nothing to show for it.

That said, if free agency keeps going the way its going now, might as well get to work on extending Wilkerson, maybe extend Sheldon a year early too since we have the money to do it, then pick-up Harvin's option and lets go into battle with the trio of Marshall & Decker outside, and Harvin in the slot.

:) Wait. Comment. He's better at what kerley does than Kerley...so I agree...plus no one is taking our money and we have to spend it...so here you go...

Why not?

Just think of all the fun Mehta will be with Harvin and Marshall in the same locker room.

Disagree.... for two reasons... One.... Much rather have a consistent Kerley in the slot With Decker and Marshall on the outside and draft a guy like Philip Dorset to be the speed guy... Younger and cheaper... and the 2nd reason being the cap... Much rather save the extra 2.6 million and use it to make sure we can pay for areas of glaring need like CB.

What if we dont get any of the top CBs and only land Cro?

disagree. i know we need to spend money, but harvin costs us not only money, but a 4th round pick.

the jets will spend the money. once they finish with FA (and they still are in play for revis, iupati, a bunch of other CBs and guards, QBs, spiller, probably some safety and TE help, etc...), they can used the unspent money on the draft class and locking up players like mo and snacks.

throwing money and flushing a 4th round pick down the drain on harvin is not a wise use of resources.

His contract is just to big for a guy that doesn't stay healthy and performance is just ok.... Oh and I failed to mention... Don't want to lose a 4th Rd pick this year.... The talent is really good in the first 4 rds but it drops terribly after that.

This after losing our 5th to secure Marshall. Besides all that, Harvin has been a pain in the rear throughout his career insisting on balls being thrown to him in a WO set. I can't see things ending well with Marshall and Harvin screaming for attention. Harvin will probably be gone by tomorrow.

Agree with all of this, even Harvin being gone tomorrow, but I think it's a mistake to cut him tomorrow. Jets should hold his contract until the 18th. Never know whats going to happen between now and then.

Yeah, that's a better option.

Disagree, negative and HELL NO!!! Harvin isn't worth $10 mil and lets not forget about giving that 4th round draft pick if they don't cut him. When they cut and if no one shows him any real interest and he comes back at $4-5 mil, then I'm all for it. Besides, we are good with Marshall, Decker and Kerley at the slot. Would be better with Harvin at the slot and Kerley at #4 , I don't doubt that but I'm sure the Jets will draft a WR in the 3rd or 4th round if they don't bring Harvin back. Plus we have the WRs we drafted last year who may step up. So our WR issues are settled IMO with or without Harvin. Question is, who will throw these guys the damn ball and who will protect the QB to throw the damn ball to these guys? That is where the rest of the cap money needs to go o-line (especially), CB, LB and maybe a RB and/or S.

I'd keep Harvin. Big upgrade in the slot. So we lose a 4th, so what. We had all those draft picks last year and what did we get out of it. Matter of fact what have we gotten from our 2nd - 7th Rd picks in the last 10 yrs?? Do we have any All-Pro's from picks 2 -7?? Harris ILB, 7-8 yrs ago. Anybody else??

Nobody takes the unspent money, it is equally distributed based on salary, amongst all jets players during the 4 year cap period. So the money is getting spent, either on fa's or on Winslow. ..

I hear you but this is a new regime. The Rex, Tanny and Idzik regime didn't work out to well obviously. I believe Mac and Bowles will choice better. As far as the last ten years of draft picks goes, I thought Mangini drafted pretty well actually. The Herm regime goes back further then that or right at ten years but I believe he wasn't so bad either.

I think having Harvin returning kicks is a huge advantage. The guy is a beast on returns, abs can be a good player in a spread offense. I think he's a difference maker if you know how to best use him. When geno starts every drive over the 35,it makes games closer.
