Hey BS
Saw Steve Hackett last night. Dude is 75(?) or so and played his butt off for 2.5 full hours. His band is amazing, been with him more or less since he left after Seconds Out.
He did what amounted to two separate shows of completely different types of music. First half was his excellent solo stuff. Second half, he did 10 pieces from Lamb and Supper's Ready. Encore was a medley from Trick and Wind ending in, of course Los Endos.
The solo stuff was spot on as this is the band that has been recording with him. Very high level of musicianship with some of my fav jazz-rock thrown in.
The Genesis section was excellent, but it wasn't quite the original band. The difference? The sound Rutherford got out of his Rick. I think that was what really made the Lamb material shine. Another takeaway was listening to the keys. They were spot on (keyboard players of skill playing from sheet music can play the exact piece perfectly. If you can do Sergei Rachmaninoff, you can do Tony Banks), but what really stood out is what an amazing genius Banks was as a composer
It was nice to see the theater jammed with people who knew this music. It's not dead yet (yet) but looking around I didn't see any young people to carry it on. Shame that.
It's notable how close Hackett was to not passing his audition. Mick Barnard replaced Phillips for the Trespass tour and was scheduled to record on Nursery Cryme. When Hackett showed, only Gabriel, Collins and Banks were there. Rutherford was home sick in bed. He was turning down guitarist after guitarist as they auditioned because he was looking for a clone of Phillips. The other members said that if Rutherford was there for Hackett's audition that he would have turned him down too. Plus they were rehearsing with Barnard for the new album who was ready to record. They made the offer to Hackett but still rehearsed with Barnard who nailed the solo on Musical Box. Banks said if they had done that earlier that they wouldn't have even auditioned Hackett. How different would everything had been!
If Hackett is near you, go see him while he's still here. Well worth it.
