JULIUS THOMAS
If he survives these next two days without getting re-signed by Denver, for me its Julius Thomas.
First I am aware that we drafted Amaro last year, but we drafted him in the second round, not the first, so he's not making a ton of money, therefore over-investing in the same position is not an issue here.
Second from what I saw in year one, Amaro is a good #2 TE who maybe can grow into a pretty good #1 , but its doubtful he will ever be an elite playmaking TE like Gronk, Jimmy Graham and Julius Thomas, TE's who instantly take your passing game to a whole nother level.
Third he's only 27, so we would be getting this guy in the absolute prime of his career.
That said, for the past few years Jet fans have watched teams hoard these terrific skill position players on offense while we have seemingly remained stuck in the stone ages because we didn't have the personnel to take advantage of every rules change over the past two decades favoring a strong passing game.
NOW WE ARE CLOSE, real close to having a collection of skill position players that are the envy of other teams and not the other way around. We have a chance to put the kind of personnel on the field that gives defensive coordinators nightmares and keeps them awake at night while preparing for the Jets.
Think of it this way, two years ago the Broncos broke damn near every single season offensive record in the book with Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and Julius Thomas looking like Kellen Winslow Sr. from back in the old Air Coryell days. Until the Legion of Boom got ahold of them in the Super Bowl, a totally healthy LOB I might add, something the busted ass Patriots didn't have to face, but until that game the Broncos offense was a machine, pick your poison, they were damn near impossible to defend.
Granted there is a huge difference between Peyton Manning and Geno Smith or Marcus Mariota, so I have no illusions about breaking NFL records, but their skill position players were off the hook and if Geno or Mariota is even competent, just competent, you should be able to score at least three touchdowns in just about every game that you play.
That said, with he addition of Julius Thomas we would automatically have 2/3's of the trio of receivers who routinely tore the league a new ass two years ago; Decker and Julius, and we would essentially have swapped Demaryius Thomas for Brandon Marshall as the BIG #1 WR in this trio.
Thats how you go from the outhouse to the penthouse with one shrewd move, and thats why Julius is my primary target. This is what I hate about the Jets too, because they always stop just shy of creating a super unit, its been their history for as long as I can remember, they never understand that if you add another great player to an already strong unit, you can turn it into a super unit and that is something to be desired.
Sadly a lot of fans share that sentiment. They don't understand that drafting to your strength, or in this case importing a free agent to what is already shaping up to be a strength, can reap huge rewards if it meets the objective and transforms a strong unit into a super unit. Thats what the Broncos had two years ago when they were posting video game numbers week in and week out, and thats what I'm trying to duplicate here, admittedly without the HOF QB, so again I don't expect that same level of dominance, but I'm trying to create a scenario whereby any halfway decent QB should be able to hang 24 to 31 Points on teams if they simply don't eff it up.
