New York Jets Did Not Allow Geno Smith To Speak With Mike Francesa

An already interesting Geno Smith situation just got a little bit more tasteful as the New York Jets restricted him from speaking live on WFAN.

From getting booted to a backup quarterback role with the signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick to saying he was “pissed off” with his step back, Geno Smith has had an interesting offseason into training camp.

Now, his situation with the New York Jets just became more interesting.

With the emergence of Bryce Petty in Week 2 of the preseason, there is speculation as to whether Smith will even land the backup job. Competition aside, the organization — according to Mike Francesa — did not allow Geno to speak on Francesa’s WFAN 5.5-hour sports radio afternoon drive program, which he is hosting live from Jets camp.



Francesa mentioned live on the air that the only player the Jets did not give him access to was Smith.

This will just increase the amount of buzz surrounding the 25-year-old, who was possibly blocked off as a precaution.

Hey, you honestly cannot blame them. He has not displayed any ability to handle the spotlight.

If I had to guess I would think that smith told the Jets he didn't want to go on the show. He doesn't usually want to talk to the people the league says he has to. Why would he want to talk to a infamous baiter like Fat Mike.

again, for effs sake bowles & maccagnan, enough with this bad comedy!! the other 31 organizations don't give a spit about your long winded dog & pony show (at the detriment of petty for the sake of it) you insist on putting on.. they will wait for this prick to be released before showing any interest in him..

I understand what the Jets are trying to do here. but smith's being such a crybaby makes it difficult. If they just come out and say "Petty is the back up" smith will go ballistic. The only way they can make that announcement, is to announce immediately following it, that " geno smith has been released from the NY Jets". Which I have no problem with.

Jets have to be 100% sure Petty is ready to come in for a game or 2 with out losing the season. I don't know what makes them think smith can do that, he hasn't in the past, but that's the thought.

I'm still expecting that the Jets will at least go into week 1 with 4 QB's. Hope they don't, but think they will.

I suspect Bowles, like most coaches, is reluctant to trust a young QB as the #2

I hope I'm wrong, but coaches are not longterm thinkers, thats why the HC doubling as GM is always a bad idea in my view, because the coach is always concerned with the immediate results, and that usually means an over reliance on veterans at the expense of youth, even if the veteran sucks. Coaches tend to put a lot of stock in actual experience. Its the GM's who take more of a longterm view.

I hope I'm wrong, but I get the impression that Petty has to look like John Unitas if he wants to take that #2 spot from Geno. Its the wrong decision in my view, but I've often been frustrated with coaches love affairs with crappy veterans.

Thats also why I fear losing one of these young WR's so we can keep Thompkins. Unless Mac steps in and overrules Bowles, I fear that may happen for the same reasons.

i know you didn't ask me FL, LOLz i'm guessing because i've already made it very clear how i feel..

i will say this though.. at this point this is bowles & maccagnan fault, not smith's.. we know at this point smith can't help himself..

Yeah, I'm afraid your probably right. i also agree it's short sighted.

Problem with Macc stepping in, is that when Bowles was hired I remember reading that he wanted it put in his contract that he ONLY had to answer to Woody when it came to coaching decisions.

I'm sure that was a result of the Idzik, Rex disaster. Guess we might as well get used to smith being on the roster.

Sure hope we don't lose one of the kids because of it. if they had to carry 4QB's to protect Petty from being cut, I'd understand, he's a young QB. Young promising QB's have great value for the future.. smith will not be on the team next year, and has no value IMO moving forward

i thought the plan was to get their elusive bag of rocks.. but like hammer said, it sounds like (in all likelihood) bowles wants to keep smith because petty is still the unknown.. smith.. the same guy he wouldn't play one game in place of fitzpatrick after his surgery on his left thumb??

bowles & or maccagnan are holding on to smith like grim death just because he's a 4year NFL veteran??

i thought the circus left town with ryan an idzik..

You may be right, with my only qualification being if Petty craps the bed in a big way in Giant game, Fitz gets injured or Smith in extended time is 'Miami game' good. Even if the latter happens, that may help in finding a trade partner.
