Breshad Perriman - WR - Ravens
Ravens rookie Breshad Perriman hasn't dropped a pass since rookie camp.
He came into the league with a history of bad drops but has been clean at OTAs. Perriman has the size and speed to replace Torrey Smith on the outside though the more pressing need is at slot receiver. Baltimore receivers caught a league-low 62 passes in the slot last season. The Ravens are confident the first-round pick can fill either role.

Kevin White - WR - Bears
Jay Cutler said first-rounder Kevin White is competing for the Bears' No. 4 receiver job.
This could clearly be a case of the Bears not handing the rookie anything, but Cutler mentioned Alshon Jeffery, Marquess Wilson, and Eddie Royal as his top three receivers. White has also missed time at minicamp with an undisclosed injury, though coach John Fox wouldn't give anymore info. It doesn't sound serious. This is just a bit of caution for re-drafters looking for White to explode on the scene year one. Wilson was a training camp star before getting hurt last year.

Josh Robinson - RB - Colts
Coach Chuck Pagano said sixth-round RB Josh Robinson has the potential to be an every-down back.
Robinson obviously won't be that in year one with Frank Gore atop the depth chart. But the rookie out of Mississippi State is firmly in the mix to be Gore's primary backup, along with Boom Herron and Vick Ballard. Herron left yards on the field last season and had some fumbling issues. Robinson runs low to the ground, breaks tackles, is consistent, and can function in the pass game.

ESPN Insider:

Despite the obvious concerns that come with betting on a rookie running back in an offense that ranked just 21st in rushing last season, there is a fair amount of fantasy hype for T.J. Yeldon. In order for him to secure a workhorse role, he will have to secure the ball better than he did at Alabama, where he fumbled the ball seven times in three seasons. So far so good. "He did it once during rookie minicamp, and that's it," wrote ESPN Jags reporter Mike DiRicco. "We'll get a better idea when the pads go on, but so far, he's looked comfortable as a runner and receiver."

Chaz Green - T - Cowboys
Cowboys third-round OT Chaz Green underwent hip surgery on Wednesday and won't be ready for the start of training camp.
Green is considered a candidate to open the year on reserve/PUP, which would sideline him for the first six games of the year. Green is unlikely to see many year-one snaps behind starters LT Tyron Smith and RT Doug Free and swing tackle Darrion Weems. He'll probably be inactive most weeks.

Duke Johnson - RB - Browns
Third-round RB Duke Johnson has been getting reps as a wide receiver at minicamp.
Per offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, this is part of the plan. Johnson doesn't look like a wideout at 5'9/200, but has soft hands and is electric in space. He's capable of playing in both the slot and even flanking all the way out wide, similar to Gio Bernard. Johnson has reportedly been the Browns' best back during the offseason program, outplaying Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West. He's a sneaky late-round running back pick, especially in PPR formats.

Darryl Roberts - DB - Patriots
Seventh-round CB Darryl Roberts is getting some reps with the starters.
The Patriots have holes to fill at the cornerback position and Roberts has athletic ability. The Marshall product ran a 4.36 at the Combine and also banged out 28 reps on the bench. "Roberts keeps making a play a day and is a dark horse to steal a cornerback job," says the Boston Herald.

Nelson Agholor - WR - Eagles
Philly Mag's Sheil Kapadia reports Eagles first-round WR Nelson Agholor has been "as advertised" during offseason practices.
"Shifty athlete with good hands who plays hard," wrote Kapadia. Agholor has been running with first- and second-team offenses during the spring and seeing time both inside and outside. He can play any of the receiver spots and should jockey with Amari Cooper and others for fantasy's top redraft rookie receiver.

Early results have been positive for Colts rookie Phillip Dorsett

INDIANAPOLIS -- To no surprise, Indianapolis Colts rookie Phillip Dorsett has not been a disappointment so far. The Colts wouldn't have taken him in the first round considering their need for help on defense and the offensive line if they didn't feel Dorsett was worth taking at No. 29.

First-round pick Phillip Dorsett is competing to be the Colts' No. 3 receiver. Zach Bolinger/Icon Sportswire
What's been even more impressive about Dorsett is his ability to line up at different spots on offense. The speedster will get first crack at returning kicks and punts for the Colts.

"We wouldn't be moving him around if he wasn't able to handle that," Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said. “His aptitude has impressed me. Obviously, speed is his calling card. But it's not just that. He's a fast guy who can play football. He has receiver's hands and he has elusiveness and change of direction that sometimes true speed freaks don't have. A lot of time they're straight-liners or can't catch, or they're little guys that lack toughness or true hands. He has that skill set."

Dorsett is competing to be the Colts' No. 3 receiver with Donte Moncrief and Duron Carter. Dorsett's signature moment (so far) came during one of the early portions of organized team activities when he blew by Pro Bowl cornerback Vontae Davis and hauled in a long pass from quarterback Andrew Luck.

As far as the other rookies go, safety Clayton Geathers has made an early impression that will make it tough to keep him off the field. He'll be used in a hybrid safety/linebacker role. Defensive end Henry Anderson could back up Kendall Langford, cornerback D'Joun Smith is the frontrunner to be the Colts' fourth cornerback behind Davis, Greg Toler and Darius Butler. David Parry will try to get in the rotation at defensive tackle. And Josh Robinson is competing with Daniel Herron, Vick Ballard (if healthy) and Zurlon Tipton to be Frank Gore's backup at running back.

"We want them to be pros, not rookies," Grigson said. "We want them to contribute this year. And to do those things, you can't just sit back and say, 'Hey, I'm a rookie.' Same as in 2012. You've gotta roll."

Cameron Erving - C - Browns
Browns OC John DeFilippo expects first-round pick Cameron Erving to open training camp at right guard.
This is where we expected Erving to end up, though he also spent time at center and left tackle during OTAs. The 22-year-old shouldn't get too cozy at guard. The Browns will need Erving to play center if Alex Mack opts out of his contract next offseason.

Marcus Mariota - QB - Titans
After viewing Titans OTAs, ESPN's Paul Kuharsky believes Marcus Mariota holds a comfortable lead over Zach Mettenberger.
Kuharsky says Mariota was "the best quarterback on the field," and "the gap wasn't a small one." Kuharsky believes long-suffering Titans fans should be "encouraged" at this stage of the process that beleaguered GM Ruston Webster finally got one right. If Ken Whisenhunt can turn in a respectable coaching job, Mariota should be an intriguing fantasy QB2 pick with low-end QB1 upside.

David Cobb - RB - Titans
ESPN’s Paul Kuharsky suggests rookie David Cobb could lead the Titans in carries.
The Titans plan to remain a committee, with Cobb the favorite for short-yardage and goal-line work. Cobb is a better inside runner than Bishop Sankey and will have an opportunity for early-down snaps. After averaging 3.7 YPC last year, the Titans could limit Sankey to a change-of-pace role.

Todd Gurley's contract only has 2 years of guaranteed money, meaning the rMs can get out of his rookie deal after next year.

If they had that much concern over gurley's injury, why would you spend a high Rd 1 pick on him? I understand protecting yourself...but essentially drafting a Rd 1 pick and signing him to a 2 year deal?

that doesn't seem to be entirely correct. not sure i understand the exact specifics of the contract and the offset language. perhaps someone like HYATT can chime in on what this all means.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...gurleys-pay-for-2015-16-even-if-he-cant-play/

The Rams hope that running back Todd Gurley can play right away. The contract he signs reflects a somewhat lower degree of optimism.

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Gurley’s contract includes a commitment from the Rams to pay Gurley’s full salary in 2015 and 2016, if he lands on the non-football injury list in both seasons due to the knee injury that occurred while he was playing college football at Georgia.

The contract also gives the Rams a way out from under the final two years of the contract, if the team eventually determines that Gurley won’t be able to recover from the torn ACL. If the deal is terminated due to the pre-existing knee injury, the Rams are on the hook only for the 2015 and 2016 base salaries.

Otherwise, the base salaries for all four years of the contract are guaranteed. And he gets an $8.3 million signing bonus, which will only be subject to reimbursement if he chooses to retire (and if the Rams choose to collect any unearned amounts).

The contract does not offset language for the guaranteed money; the Rams typically remove offset language from their first-round rookie deals. But the guaranteed money for 2017 and 2018 can be avoided entirely if Gurley is cut due to the pre-existing knee injury.

So if he never is able to pass a physical with the Rams, he gets the signing bonus and the base salaries for 2015 and 2016. Once he passes a physical, the full contract is guaranteed, without offset.

UPDATE 11:28 a.m. ET: A prior version of this article indicated that the contract has offset language for the guarantees. A Rams source tells PFT that the information disseminated by the NFLPA regarding that point was not accurate.

The way I understand it, since Gurley suffered his injury in college, if he is unable to play, he would be eligible for the Non Football Injury List, in which case his base salary would not be guaranteed.

Looks like the Rams are saying they are willing to guarantee the base salary for two years. In exchange, if Gurley cannot play due to the college injury, the Rams are protected for the last two years and can get out of the contract. If he can play, the full 4 years are guaranteed.

Really just both sides protecting themselves.

Doral Green-Beckham says the NFL’s message is loud and clear

Dorial Green Beckham

Wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham said when he left Titans minicamp, he knew he had to make good decisions.

One of them was walking ears-open into the NFL’s rookie symposium.

Via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, the talented wideout with the history of trouble in college (including domestic violence allegations which never became charges) said he’s taking all of this week’s messages in.

“I know now what I can and can’t do,” Green-Beckham said. “The [NFL] talked about it last night how important it is to make sure [to know] most of the problems come from alcohol and women.

“They talk a lot about it, and they want us to put ourselves in better situations … All of that stuff, they take very seriously. It’s serious stuff.”

Of course, most of the problems also have something to do with men behaving poorly, which Green-Beckham has done.

Of his incident at Missouri which led to his transfer, Green-Beckham wouldn’t talk specifics, saying he was just in the “wrong place at the wrong time.”

“Something was said that supposedly I did, and it can all go wrong,” he said. “But I had the chance to go to Oklahoma and surround myself with better people and learn from those experiences.”

Asked what he’d do in a future situation, and he sounded like he was reading from a playbook.

“Get as far away as you can from that person, and relax,” Green-Beckham said. “If it was me and I had a girlfriend and we got into it, I probably wouldn’t go back to the house that night. I would go to a friend’s house, let it calm down, then be good the next day.”

So the message is getting through to those the league needs to hear it. Now they just have to put it in play.

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu still has a long way to go, six months after surgery

Posted by Michael David Smith on June 24, 2015, 11:31 AM EDT
Ifo Ekpre-Olomu
Browns rookie cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is six months removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL, which he suffered in December while practicing for Oregon’s NCAA playoff game. He’s still not running at full speed.

Ekpre-Olomu, who suffered both a torn ACL and a dislocated kneecap and needed a second surgery after the first one six months ago, says he’s hoping he can run as fast as ever once he’s fully healed.

“The running, they say, will come easily once that’s back so right now I’m really focusing on strengthening the quad and hamstring again,” he told ESPN. “I’m not running full speed at all yet. I’m actually going back to California to meet with my doctor and from there he’ll take me to the next step. If I can play, I want to play. So that’s going to be up to the head coach and GM. IF not, then I’m going to prepare every day like I’m going to play. I do everything everyone else is doing. I just spend extra time in the physical therapy room, so I spend about three hours in the physical therapy room every day and other than that I’m with the team every other second.”

A projected first-round pick heading into last season, Ekpre-Olomu fell all the way to the seventh round. He’s still wearing a heavy brace on his knee, and he’s expected to miss his entire rookie season. If he can heal fully this year and play like a first-round pick in 2016, however, the Browns will feel like they got a steal. Even if they had to wait a year.

T.J. Yeldon puts himself last on Jaguars depth chart

Posted by Josh Alper on June 24, 2015, 7:09 AM EDT
T. J. Yeldon
AP
Earlier this month, the Jaguars website called T.J. Yeldon the likely starting running back for the team during the 2015 season.

The second-round pick has reportedly been impressive enough during the team’s offseason workouts to give himself the edge over Toby Gerhart, Denard Robinson, Bernard Pierce and Storm Johnson. Yeldon isn’t among those buying into the hype, however.

“I got myself as last, and I’m still trying to work my way up to the top,” Yeldon said, via NFL.com. “I’m just out there to compete and work my way up to the top, see what I can do.”

Yeldon’s gotten praise in both the running and passing game as a result of his work with the Jags this offseason, which, along with the relatively weak competition at the position, opens up the possibility that he can be a three-down back in Jacksonville. The rookie believes he can be one as well, although he adds that he’s “still learning” the NFL game.

Since Jaguars offensive coordinator Greg Olsen has also mentioned Yeldon as a three-down back, we’re guessing he’s not at the bottom of the depth chart although it’s probably a good thing that he acts like he is until someone makes it official.

The Marcus Mariota revolution will not be broadcast on social media

Posted by Darin Gantt on June 24, 2015, 6:42 AM EDT
Marcus Mariota
AP
Marcus Mariota may do exciting things for the Titans on the field this year.

But don’t expect to hear much from him off the field.

The low-key quarterback, the second overall pick in the draft, said his goals as he prepares for his first training camp are simple.

“Just eliminate distractions,” he said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “These next six weeks are important. You’ve got to be able to continue to prepare, continue to build the mental preparation and when training camp comes around be physically ready to go.”

Whether he becomes a Super Bowl champion remains to be seen. But he’s shown he can be Joe Flacco-level elite when it comes to being dull in front of reporters.

While other rookies at this week’s symposium are hearing lessons about troubles they’ve already had, Mariota is avoiding one potential pitfall, as he’s never participated in Twitter or Instagram.

“Obviously you’ve got to be smart with what you’re doing on social media,” Mariota said. “I don’t participate in social media. I think social media provides an opportunity for people to get insight into what you’re doing. But for me, I like to keep stuff private.”

If he becomes the kind of franchise quarterback the Titans hope, that’s fine. Otherwise, they’ll likely be content to stay out of the headlines for the wrong reasons.
