February 20-March 6 -- Period in which teams can designate franchise and transition players. This doesn't apply to the Jets, who don't have any prospective free agents who rise to that level. But they will be paying attention to the Washington Redskins. If the Redskins apply the franchise tag to Kirk Cousins, which emerged as a possibility on Sunday, it could alter the Jets' free-agent plan. If he's tagged, the Jets would have to compensate the Redskins to complete a trade in addition to signing Cousins to a long-term deal.

February 27-March 5 -- Scouting combine. General manager Mike Maccagnan & Co. will trek to Indianapolis to evaluate 300-plus draft prospects. This will mark the first time the top quarterback prospects are under the same roof, an opportunity to compare them side by side.

The combine also is where teams lay the groundwork for free-agent contracts and potential trades. Chances are, Maccagnan will meet with the agents for his top free agents -- Morris Claiborne, Demario Davis and Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Tampering rules prohibit teams from speaking to agents representing other teams' free agents, but that doesn't stop it from happening. Could Maccagnan have a "chance" encounter with Cousins' agent? Hey, you never know. Wink, wink.

March 12-March 14 -- The "legal" tampering period. Teams are permitted to enter into negotiations with prospective unrestricted free agents. This will be a crucial window for the Jets, especially with regard to their quarterback plan. It would be risky to put all their eggs in the Cousins basket, so it's important to maintain an open line of communication with other free-agent quarterbacks -- i.e. Tyrod Taylor and Case Keenum.

March 14 -- The league year and free agency begin. It's "go" time, and the Jets have the ability to be aggressive spenders. As of Feb. 5, the Jets have $72 million in projected cap space, according to overthecap.com. By March 14, that number should be at least $90 million, setting them up nicely for free agency. That doesn't take into account their own players that may re-sign before then.

March 14 -- Must submit qualifying offers to restricted free agents. The Jets' top RFA is Quincy Enunwa, whom they absolutely don't want to lose. The question is whether they give him a second-round tender or a first-round tender. A year ago, those numbers were $2.7 million and $3.9 million, respectively. Enunwa is an ascending talent, but he missed last season with a neck surgery, which could complicate the decision.

March 15 -- Adios, Mo (if he hasn't been released already).

I'd like to know some answers to these next few questions from some of you knowledgeable Jet experts. Are we allowed to make trades now as they did with KC and Washington? Would it benefit the Jets to try and trade M. Wilkerson or release him? Do you consider Roquan Smith a decent LB? He seems awful light aka ILB Lee. Is Vita Vea good value for us at #6 if We can't trade down, don't need a QB or Barkley is gone? looking for some input?

trades can be discussed in terms but can not be executed until start of league year March 14th. Trading period for 2018 begins at 4:00 p.m., New York time, after expiration of all 2017 contracts.

until new league year on 3/14 the Jets will have a three day window to make a move with Mo WIlkerson either be trade or release as his contract becomes full guaranteed on 3/17.

Roquan Smith is one of my favorite options for MLB but he will be taken in the middle of the first round. Too early for us to take him at 6, but if we trade down he could be an option from 12-18...

Vita Vea is good but there are some concerns In the run game, Vea can get into trouble when he stands up too high. That lets guards get underneath him sometimes push him back. Vea is a solid run defender, but he isn't dominant. If Vea can maintain his leverage and conditioning, he has the potential to be a special in the ground game. For a nose tackle that is poor against the run is suspect especially for the 6th overall selection. Will he go in the Top 12, yes but do we need to reach another player; if he fails oh boy.

If that scenario at 6 can not trade down, we don't need a QB and Saquon Barkley is gone then the next best player available would be ER Bradley Chubb is one option... Another option would be OG Quenton Nelson, and CB Minkah Fitzpatrick are another two options... The best need option could be reaching and taking Roquan Smith here to replace Demario Davis but like I said he is rated middle of the first, and the team will take some flack for it...

Jets Sign Kacy Rodgers II

[h=1]Jets sign son of defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers[/h] NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
The Jets have signed defensive back Kacy Rodgers II, the son of their defensive coordinator, Kacy Rodgers, according to the agency that represents Rodgers II:

The elder Rodgers is entering his fourth year as Todd Bowles' defensive coordinator.

Rodgers II had been playing in the CFL before being released last week by Saskatchewan, so he could pursue NFL opportunities. He was going to become a CFL free agent on Feb. 13.

Rodgers II, who is 25, spent two seasons with Saskatchewan. He had one sack and one forced fumble in 2016. He had an interception (which he returned for a touchdown) and two forced fumbles in 2017.

He played collegiately at Miami from 2010-13, starting 14 games at safety over his final two seasons, and picking off one pass. His father was the Dolphins' defensive line coach from 2008-14. Rodgers II is 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds.

Because it is the offseason, the Jets' roster can now comprise 90 players. The Jets don't have to trim to 53 until the end of training camp.

this organization rarely misses opportunities to make ridiculous, half baked decisions.. i could rattle of a laundry list of reasons this is set up to be epic fail for all involved..

nobody/nothing can convince the jets that they are not the smartest guys in the room.. just wow!!

We are getting near the FA period where we will hand out our $$$$ for FA's. Except for Cousins where do we go? Our own FA: Clairborne: He has had 1 average season for the Jets. I hope we don't offer a lot for him. Same with DeMario Davis (plus their age). TE: ASJ. Other team FA: Center Jensen (Balt). he won't come cheap. CB Fuller (Bears) played well his contract year. RB: Hyde Crowell, I do not like either one. Sorry, I am all over the page on this post. I have to report for duty shortly.

Now that would be stupid.

It's not too far off from Stafford's contract.
Remember the source ( Cimini) .
the $60 million would be signing bonus and the majority of the first years salary. Stafford Reciever $50 million.
Mac has some faults , contract structure is definitely not one of them.
If he does try to sign Cousins , I'm sure the Contract will be structured with an easy out after year 2 or 3. Remember the only money that is truly guaranteed is the amount guaranteed at signing. Again I will use Stafford's contract as an example. 5 years ,$135 million. 90 million guaranteed. The reality of that contract is only the signing bonus and 2018's base salary are guaranteed. 2019's base is only guaranteed for injury, none of the roster / workout bonuses are guaranteed nor are the last 3 years on his deal so his real guaranteed money is $60.5 million..His 2017 salary I'd mostly included in his signing bonus. His base salary for 17 was 1 Million. and 9.5 for 18.
I'd expect a very similar contract structure for Cousins with maybe a higher signing bonus , and lower base in year 2. That type of contract structure would make it a win - win. Cousin's gets paid, Jets have their QB and can part ways after 2 or 3 years if things go bad, or they can restructure the deal in year 3 if things go well.

In a situation like this, once cousins receives his money up front, what is stopping him from holding out to get more money? Just wondering if anything like that happened in the NFL. Where someone gets his money up front in a long term deal but then holds out once the money is not guaranteed.

It happens with front loaded contracts , this structure is not really front loaded.
I can't see Cousins or any player holding out immediately after signing a contract.
If he did , the Jets could simply refuse to negotiate and demand he return the signing bonus. It wouldn't be unprecedented.

Would you sign DeMario Davis to a contract? He is 29 and coming off of a good year (his best), but its his contract year (Muhammad Wilkerson). Will he take the money and regress back to his old self. there are options in the draft, especially if we have the opportunity to trade back and accumulate more picks.
