One game suspension for Sheldon

not sure i buy that argument.

he was suspended 4 games for substance abuse policy violations. that had nothing to do with his driving at over 140, endangering a kid, and being found in a car reeking of pot and containing a loaded semi-automatic handgun.

yes, he was very lucky it was only 1 game for this. but he did not serve 4 games for basically the same situation. if anything, the prior situation called for a more harsh response, not leniency for "time served"

The league had the opportunity to suspend him last year, when the two offenses coincided. They held out until the courts had their say.

The courts did, and exonerated him for the kid, the pot, and the gun. His plea agreement was for resisting arrest. Since the league withheld their additional punishment until the courts ruled, they could only go by the ruling.

So saying he should have gotten more because of the kid, the alleged smell of pot, and the legal gun, goes against what the league said it would do.

on july 2, 2015, richardson was suspended 4 games for failing a drug test

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/jets-sheldon-richardson-suspended-4-games-3-things-to-know/

on july 14, 2015, richardson was arrested for driving over 140, endangering a kid, etc...

http://nypost.com/2015/07/30/jets-sheldon-richardson-arrested-for-fleeing-cops-at-143-mph/

these are completely separate issues.

in january this year, richardson pleaded guilty to lesser charges. following the completion of the criminal proceedings the nfl has now suspended him an additional game

Honestly, I don't think the nfl should be punishing people for behavior outside of the "work place"
This is what happens when a few players act like idiots and the press attacks the nfl. The nfl feels like they have to show the world that they're serious. Ray rice, Adrian Peterson, etc. A few bad apples ruined everything.

It's a difficult situation, because it leads to talk of the league being insensitive to crimes like domestic abuse or child abuse.

When people argue that some guys commit violent crimes and only get two games, while Brady deflated footballs and got four, their argument is specious. They seem to forget that the F in NFL stands for FOOTBALL, and that the league's top priority, above being the morality police, is to regulate the game on the field.

And you are leaving out that he was not convicted of endangering a kid, or possessing marijuana. He was convicted of resisting arrest by not pulling over immediately.

that's probably why he only got 1 game. he agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge and the prosecutors didn't have enough evidence to go after him on the more serious stuff. while a different sport, jose reyes was suspended 50 games or so and the charges against him were dropped over lack of evidence (cooperating witness).

but again, richardson's suspension today had nothing to do with his prior suspension. you previously mentioned the events coincided with each other but that isn't true. 2 weeks AFTER he was suspended last year, he got arrested. and given his prior history with the league, he's lucky it was only 1 game.

Fair enough about the timeline. I did not recall there being a two-week gap between the events. But it was you who pointed to him being arrested for "driving over 140, endangering a kid, etc.." while others have mentioned the gun or the pot, when he was exonerated for endangering the kid, the pot, and the gun.

It's not fair to expect the league to say they are waiting for the courts, then complain that the suspension isn't long enough even though he was exonerated on most of the charges.

you are right. but many are speaking emotionally, not legally. and as we've seen with other suspensions, what happens in the legal system doesn't always matter. the charges against ray rice were dropped and he was still suspended. jose reyes had charges against him dropped and he was still suspended.

given richardson did this idiotic stuff 2 weeks after being suspended by the league, he's lucky he got off with only a game, even if the more serious charges were dropped. of course, resisting arrest is still a serious issue, even if the child endangerment, excessive speeding and drugs and weapons charges were ultimately dropped.

Employers do it all the time. Not just the NFL. I hate the fact that people are fired for a Facebook post. Just don't think that should be allowed. Even though I almost always think what they posted was reprehensible.

Sheldon was first suspended for substance violations, and now it's conduct. We knew this was coming and it should be no surprise.

in the age of social media you are essentially "on the clock" 24/7.. i have little to no sympathy for someone who would jeopardize their job/career over showing their ass (metaphorically or otherwise) on social media.. it can/will get you fired..

what is, is..

I'm just glad to have this issue be determined with some certainty. I hate question marks like this hanging over the team.

I think Sheldon is lucky to get only one game ... I HATE reckless drivers, and people who are reckless with children and guns ... I mean, really, come on.

His behavior was awful, and showed a massive lack of judgment. I mean, who would make that choice?

That said, the league could only suspend based on the conviction, since that is what it said it would do when it did not give a 2015 suspension.

I just hope he learned a lesson - being a young, excellent football player does NOT make you invincible. He got nabbed and he got punished. PLEASE learn a lesson from this.

The nfl did us a favor by waiting till this year, they also were waiting on the court to finish up.

I'm sure the Jets staff knew this was coming for months.

Guys are sometimes suspended without convictions. In this case, the league opted to put its trust in the courts, and said as much when it did not extend his 2015 4-game suspension, opting to wait until after the legal wrangling had worked itself out.

A real punishment would be just the game checks, but make these idiots play the games. Watch what happens when they still have to go out there and get the shit kicked out of them for free.

I can hear the Pats fans now - "the Jet guy is caught speeding/evading police with a minor and weed in the vehicle and gets a slap on the wrist. My guy Tom is under-inflating footballs and gets four games plus Pats lose draft pick and cash. Goodell hates the greatness of Tom and the Pats."

Memo to Pats fans:
FUCK YOU!
Strongly worded message to follow.
