Pick #103 - Bryce Petty - QB - Baylor

IMHO saying the 1st chance he gets he needs to be one of the few great later pics right away is not being patient and hopeful.

If he's not Russell or Brady when he hits the field, he's just a 4th round pick waiting to be upgraded...history says that's true.

Brady was competent when he first started, but the defense DEFINITELY carried the team early on . . .

Petty has accuracy issues at this point . Hopefully he can work the kinks out by next season

So much for this kid being "groomed" or given a red shirts year. By Bowles cutting Flynn & Johnson yesterday demonstrates that they very much trust Bryce to open the season as a starter.

The kid is one snap away from throwing to 4rth stringers to rocketing bullets to Pro bowlers. IMHO, the kid would have benefited starting this season as a 3rd QB to the roster. But hey, the coaching staff sees him play and the kid may have been progressing better than anyone (including myself) has expected.

This to me is an enormous indication on what our current regime thinks of the youngster.

The problem with this logic is by calling Petty #2 , you're listing Geno #3 and I don't think that's the case. Like many here, I think they're rolling the dice that Fitz can make it to the bye, at which point Geno will leapfrog Petty (if not sooner). If Petty does have to go in, he'll probably hand off 80% of the time, which I wouldn't qualify as "an enormous indication on what our current regime thinks of the youngster".

Of course, you could be right and they might be sky-high on the kid, but I still think we're in a scenario where he sees MINIMAL amount of time on the field, regardless of how the season pans out . . .

I have liked what I have saw of Petty so for this year... Very early days, but I have high hopes that he will come good for us of given the right amount of development time!

Petty, like Jarvis Harrison and Deon Simon, are players the team hopes to develop for the future.

Barring a major catastrophe at QB, Petty isn't seeing the field in 2015. As much as it pains some of you, Geno Smith will replace Fitzpatrick due to injury or sub par play.

I'm glad they have that confidence in Petty to cut Flynn and Johnson. I've been pretty impressed with what I've seen from him. What happens when Geno is cleared to play is a unknown right now I guess. Question is if Fitz starts to suck or gets hurt what happens then? Second question is, I've read the Jets plan on resigning Flynn and/or Johnson after week #1 . Am I reading or understanding this wrong or what?

They don't have confidence in Petty to play, its just a numbers game. They already have 2 other rookies on the roster who probably won't see the field, so there was no room for Flynn or Johnson. Petty is not ready and that's fine, nothing wrong with development. They are just taking a 3-4 week gamble

I'm betting they sign one of them so they don't have to guarantee their salary after week one. They will be fine with Fitz, Petty or Kerley as a backup to Petty. If all three get hurt then we could have major problems which would be a very Jet thing to do.

This all rides on many variables. God forbid Fitz gets injured and we're down by two scores, i doubt Gailey will play it conservative by running it 80% of the time.

Like i stated before, i'd rather have Petty red shirted, but if he is showing any sort of progression, i wouldnt hold it past this regime to place him in front of Geno Smith. Mac and Bowles have no obligation towards Smith to place him as a 2nd stringer when healthy. If he show cases he has matured in the locker room then it is a different story.

Only the coaches at Florham know what is truly happening. We can speculate all we want at what position they will place Smith in regards to the back up role or even starting. My gut feeling is that if Petty is showing any improvement, the coaching brass would rather take their chances on him than a flop such as Geno who countlessly blunders his opportunities.

("the punch" could have easily been dodged if he was man enough to pay off his debt)

In Flynn's case they can keep him for game 1, and not have to guarantee his salary for the season. He already received his termination pay from the Raiders a few years ago. A player can only collect termination pay once in his career.

IMO they are taking a gamble that no one will sign Flynn, unless they have an injury to a starting QB. If Fitz gets hurt week one, they have enough confidence in Petty to let him finish the game and perhaps still come away with a win. If Flynn is still unsigned, he'll be on the first plane to NY, and at practice Tuesday.

Are you so sure they don't? A 3-4 week gamble is a pretty damn big gamble. God forbid Fitz does get hurt or really stink, Petty will have to play. Means to me they must have confidence in him to go in and do something. It may only be handing the ball off 75% of the time but they have enough confidence in him to do that. I'm sure he wouldn't be handing the ball off 75% of the time anyway, more like 65% LOL. Anyway, what other two rookies are you talking about?

I was thinking the same thing to a certain extent. Seemed to me they may want to see if Petty has developed enough to be the #2 period and if not, resign Flynn before Geno's return.

I could not agree more. This regime is smart and obviously tactical. Bryce is of course a newbie and the Jets stated from day one that they will take their time grooming him.

YET, with that said, if the kid is accelerating in learning and ingesting Chan Gaileys system then why not do what is right? Promote him to 2nd string. Why force the matter in bringing some one else in (as they did) with more experience to be "SAFE" while Petty beat both of them out out right in practice.

Josh Johnson & Matt Flynn have reached their ceiling. I have a feeling Petty has met their potential and has alot more room to show case what he has to offer, hence IMHO the decision to go with Bryce as the number two.

Though it will be interesting to see when Geno gets healthy what management will do to handle this situation of growth with Bryce.

I don't think this has anything to do with the Jets thinking Petty is a viable #2 . I watched Petty in all of his appearances. While he's got potential, no way is he a #2 right now. The Jets are banking on Fitz not getting hurt for the first 4 weeks, and Geno coming in as the primary backup sometime around then. (Side note: I think Geno isn't going to miss as much time as originally thought).

It's a risk. There's no question in my mind that, right now, Matt Flynn is a safer and better option than Bryce Petty. And that is NOT a criticism of Petty. I like Petty. Just not right now.

This is really not a debatable issue. Bowles and Gailey are crossing their fingers nothing happens to Fitz until Geno gets back. Sure . Petty looked Ok against # 2s, but so did pretty much every other backup this preseason. The kids not ready and they know that. They are rolling the dice for a few weeks. I like the gamble, to strengthen other spots

Yes it will be interesting. Funny thing is there are some poster saying this isn't a move about the Jets having confidence in Petty being the #2 or Petty outplaying Flynn or Johnson. It's more so them banking on Fitz not getting hurt for 4 games or more. That is a huge risk, Fitz has always been known as a injury prone player if I'm correct and not a winning QB.

So to bank on that is assinine. They have to have confidence in Petty and fell he can handle the #2 spot. Makes since to me but I'm not a coach, management or a player who has the inside scoop so what do I know. As for Geno, when he returns I believe if Petty has improved even more and I dont see why he wouldn't, Geno will be the #3 or have to fight for the #2 and it wont be handed it to him.
