Bryce Petty could be the Jets’ quarterback of the future. And in Friday night’s preseason win over the Falcons, the rookie gunslinger finally started to showcase why the Jets drafted him in the fourth round.
With Geno Smith sidelined with a broken jaw and newly acquired backup Matt Flynn out with a hamstring injury, Petty took most of the snaps. He replaced starter Ryan Fitzpatrick late in the second quarter and played until less than five minutes remained in the fourth, using the extended opportunity to spark a comeback victory.
Petty completed 12 of 19 passes for 168 yards and his first touchdown pass — a slick 13-yard throw to DeVier Posey. The performance was substantially better than his debut against the Lions last week, when he completed 10 of 18 passes for 50 yards, only a 2.8 yards-per-attempt average.
“Last week, (I) had no idea what to expect, as far as the game goes, as far as myself personally, emotionally, how it would roll. So I felt like coming into this week, I would have a better understanding of how things went down and how things worked,” Petty said. “I felt a lot more comfortable out there.”
Petty’s confidence was clear from his opening series when he led a 10-play, 51-yard drive for a field goal and engineered a third-quarter drive that went 57 yards on eight plays. It ended with Posey’s touchdown grab and extended the Jets’ lead to nine points.
“He was a little more poised. And that’s the progress we’re trying to get with him — get better every week, a little bit better every week,” Jets coach Todd Bowles said of Petty. “He got better from last week to this week, so hopefully he’ll keep moving forward.”
CONCUSSION COULD BE COSTLY FOR KERLEY
Bowles announced after Friday’s game that three Jets suffered concussions in the win: receiver Jeremy Kerley, running back Daryl Richardson and safety Durell Eskridge. The development is probably most impactful for Kerley, who is in serious danger of losing the starting slot receiver job to Quincy Enunwa. The second-year player started as the Jets’ No. 3 receiver Friday night.
Petty and Kerley hooked up for back-to-back completions of 17 and 21 yards, respectively, near the end of the second quarter after Bowles pulled the first-team offense. Kerley also started as the Jets’ punt returner. But his night was cut short because of the concussion, and he finished with just those two catches.
Kerley, who signed a four-year contract before last season, also suffered a concussion in 2013.
