I think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves with Petty. Look, I'm just as optimistic as the next fan regarding Petty's prospects as our eventual starter. But let's keep this in perspective. He still needs a lot of work, and is still not a sure thing. He did a decent job against backups. That's progress, but he's still got a ways to go.

Just as I'm critical of the doomsday crowd overreacting to early exhibition football, I'm also very cautious to start reading too much into the positives, too. This talk of Petty perhaps challenging for a starting job as early as this season is nuts.

If season goes downhill fast, I want to see Petty take his lumps this season.

Third time I'm posting this. Sorry and it will be the last. Just didn't want to say the same thing in three different ways on three different threads:

My assessment of watching Fitz over the past two games is he is your basic, play it safe to the MAX and check down king of QBs. Ofcourse this isn't news to anyone and we all know this but to see in action for two straight games is something else. I've never really watched or paid any attention to Fitz until now. Back to my point, Caption check-down can be an asset because he won't or you wouldn't expect him to turn the ball over as much as Geno, Sanchez or even a Petty. With that said, we can win 10-11 games with him if he play this way and limits the turnovers.

However; this puts much pressure on the D, o-line and running game in which this would of most likely been the case with Geno but for a different reason and that is the TOs. With Fitz, there will be a lot of three and outs and as we saw over the first two pre-season games. When he and the O can get it going they will score nicely but don't expect much of it. So the D, o-line and running game has to keep the games close for us to win. If they can do that, Fitz plays his basic, check-down and safe game and limits the TOs then we have a chance to win.

Problem is, what happens when we go up against high scoring teams the D can't do but so much? Or high powered defenses that can shut down our basic offense and not allow us to score what appears to be a 17 point offense max? Guess only time will tell but I'm trying my best to be optimistic here Jets faithful. It appears any pass over 25 yards and we might as well forget it. Looks to me like the pass will either fall short or get intercepted. I'm not sure if Fitz will even throw a pass over 25 yards to be honest, even if the play is designed to do so.

I truly am liking what I'm seeing from Petty and I think if he can show something the third game, they should consider giving him the nod as starter. Petty passes looked sharp and he has a much better then an average NFL arm. Question is, has he grasped the NFL other aspects of the game, majority and leadership qualities and he probably has not. Give him a year on the bench to learn and I think we will have something special. I want to see him playing from game one now but that will probably hurt more then help. J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets

Hopefully a smarter QB with less turnovers will overcome his lack of arm strength.

Bryce Petty shows he can be Jets QB of future

BY DANIEL POPPER NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Sunday, August 23, 2015, 12:19 AM A A A

ED MULHOLLAND/USA TODAY SPORTS

Bryce Petty throws for 168 yards and a touchdown in his second preseason game with the Jets.
Bryce Petty could be the Jets’ quarterback of the future. And in Friday night’s preseason win over the Falcons, the rookie gunslinger finally started to showcase why the Jets drafted him in the fourth round.

With Geno Smith sidelined with a broken jaw and newly acquired backup Matt Flynn out with a hamstring injury, Petty took most of the snaps. He replaced starter Ryan Fitzpatrick late in the second quarter and played until less than five minutes remained in the fourth, using the extended opportunity to spark a comeback victory.

Petty completed 12 of 19 passes for 168 yards and his first touchdown pass — a slick 13-yard throw to DeVier Posey. The performance was substantially better than his debut against the Lions last week, when he completed 10 of 18 passes for 50 yards, only a 2.8 yards-per-attempt average.

“Last week, (I) had no idea what to expect, as far as the game goes, as far as myself personally, emotionally, how it would roll. So I felt like coming into this week, I would have a better understanding of how things went down and how things worked,” Petty said. “I felt a lot more comfortable out there.”

Petty’s confidence was clear from his opening series when he led a 10-play, 51-yard drive for a field goal and engineered a third-quarter drive that went 57 yards on eight plays. It ended with Posey’s touchdown grab and extended the Jets’ lead to nine points.

“He was a little more poised. And that’s the progress we’re trying to get with him — get better every week, a little bit better every week,” Jets coach Todd Bowles said of Petty. “He got better from last week to this week, so hopefully he’ll keep moving forward.”

CONCUSSION COULD BE COSTLY FOR KERLEY

Bowles announced after Friday’s game that three Jets suffered concussions in the win: receiver Jeremy Kerley, running back Daryl Richardson and safety Durell Eskridge. The development is probably most impactful for Kerley, who is in serious danger of losing the starting slot receiver job to Quincy Enunwa. The second-year player started as the Jets’ No. 3 receiver Friday night.

Petty and Kerley hooked up for back-to-back completions of 17 and 21 yards, respectively, near the end of the second quarter after Bowles pulled the first-team offense. Kerley also started as the Jets’ punt returner. But his night was cut short because of the concussion, and he finished with just those two catches.

Kerley, who signed a four-year contract before last season, also suffered a concussion in 2013.

I agree with many of your points, though the common denominator with rookies is that they all have alot of work to do in order to be ready. Some progress at a slower ala Drew Brees, that at some point it clicks. Then some progress straight out of college regardless of what they ran at that level heading into the pros, ala Russell Wilson.

To your point, yes the coaching staff must be cautious as handling the growth of a young gun slinger. Especially once their confidence gets shot down, there's only way to raise them back up and that is playing else where, such as Mark Sanchez. I truly like how Bowles & Chan are handling the maturation process of Bryce Petty. They are not forcing him to become the strarter in 2015. They are not pressing him to learn the playbook inside out right now. Yet, with that being said, it seems Bryce (from his patience at Baylor, waiting to start) has a system built in his mind to study his ass off to showcase that he belongs in mention to become the back up this season.

One quarterback i always admired how an organization groomed properly was the late Steve McNair. Then head coach of the Tennesee Titans Jeff Fisher automatically named the veteran Chris Chandler the starter for the 1995 campaign. Yet in preseason Fisher saw that McNair was clawling to atleast become one step away from the pitch in case Chandler got injured or failed to perform. Steve won the back up role as he beat out Will Furrer for the 1st two years and was named the starter in '97.

Like i said before, If Bryce continues to show marginal improvement, then being the season opening back up is not a bad thought as the kid is doing everything necessary to prove his worth.

Side note:
I strongly feel if Bryce continues to progress, is not only a step ahead of Matt Flynn, but can realistically supplant Geno Smith once he's cleared to go. Handing Geno the back up role once he's healthy is again, gift wrapping it to him with out competing for it as it has been ever since Idzik drafted him.

If Bryce is truly the future of this team and he's making strides, i would think the coaching staff will not cut down on the amount of limited snaps he is currently getting in practice. If Geno wants to become a back up, let him fight for it. Just like Bryce has been doing ever since May 2nd 2015.

The more I see of Petty the more I like him, he still has a long way to go, but could be a a long term answer for us. Lets see what he looks like in the final preseason games playing behind many of the starters.

If we would have been able to get Mariota, would everyone still want him to sit behind Geno/Fitz??

Fair question Tebow. That is one of the reasons I was luke warm on Mariota. It is really hard to sit a player taken that high in the draft, but yeah, I think Mariota would benefit from a year on the bench.

Of course he's not going to get it.

Kenny O'brien was Dan Marino if Marino played w/o an oline. It's amazing he could spin it with Marino, sometimes for 400+ yards, w/o blocking. Poor guy took a beating.

Pennington was average? Huh. Tell that to Dungy and Peyton Manning. Ask how they faired against Pennington led teams in the playoffs. He was elite when healthy...but running into Rays Ravens and the Bettis Steelers were tough sledding.

Nope, I'm in the camp we'd be Super Bowl contenders with either guy at QB this year If they were at 100% healthy.
I'm with you on both QBs to a certain extent. O'Brien gave us what he could which wasn't bad at all but I still dont think he was or could have been as good as Marino. Marino was elite, all time great in fact.

Pennington could have been a monster for us if not for the injuries. His arm was never the strongest but his intelligence for the game, anticipation, leadership and accuracy were elite no doubt. He was a tough and confident SOB which I love also.

I never knew that Petty led his conference in rushing tds..

Yeah, that was the play that "Chuckie" got all over him for on his QB challenge show. Told him he had the best arm talent of any body in the draft, and he can't be leaping over people in the NFL.

Bryce still has a lot to learn in NY -- about pizza. Not sure if anyone saw this yesterday, but he took a bit of heat, good-natured, from Jet fans, after he tweeted about ordering pizza from Domino's. Thought it was pretty funny, especially since it was a friend of mine who first took him to task for ordering from Domino's.

Jets rookie QB Bryce Petty scolded by fans for his pizza game plan

Rich Cimini, ESPN Staff Writer

Everybody knows rookie quarterbacks have a lot to learn -- pass coverages, protection schemes, blitz packages, audibles ...

And pizza.

Yes, pizza.

New York Jets rookie Bryce Petty showed his inexperience in this area Thursday night by tweeting about his pizza order from a company -- how can we put this gently? -- not known for its culinary expertise. Not surprisingly, he was inundated with saucy tweets from folks in the New York/New Jersey area who razzed him about his pizza taste, suggesting (even demanding) he try the local fare. They're pretty proud of their pizza, and with good reason.

Petty is a smart cookie. We know this because he scored a 31 on his Wonderlic intelligence test, third-highest among the quarterbacks drafted in 2015. The test apparently didn't include any pizza-related questions. We'll cut him a break. After all, he has spent his entire life in Texas. He grew up in Midlothian and attended college in Waco (Baylor).

Before it mushroomed into huge controversy, Petty tweeted a good-natured mea culpa, albeit a bit on the cheesy side. But, hey, it was the yeast he could do.

New York Jets: Rookie quarterback Bryce Petty could play the entire second half on Saturday night in the Jets' third preseason game, but there's nothing at stake in terms of the depth chart. There is no chance he will be the No. 2 quarterback for Week 1, according to Todd Bowles. Matt Flynn is projected as the primary backup -- but he could lose the spot to newly signed Josh Johnson if Flynn's hamstring problem persists. I am okay with this. Let's escape this third game without any injuries, finalize the roster and get started with the season!

I'm really not happy to hear this but I realize they are doing the right thing by Petty. Sit him this whole year, let him learn and fight for the starting spot next year. This third game IMO should determine if Petty will be ready to be the #2 but of course they know better then we do.

Lets see what Petty does tonight. I'm expecting a rookie hic cup from him somewhere along the line . I like the kid a lot at this point, he seems to be ahead of where I expected him to be. I really think putting him in the fire right now will be detrimental to his long term development. He's in a great spot right now sitting behind an 11 year vet who has stayed in the league because of his smarts, not his arm. Rather see Petty sit back and learn, rather then be out there worrying about winning games.

Jets have pushed rookies, who weren't ready, unto the field twice in a row. It hasn't worked real well

Petty should learn and develop behind Fitzpatrick and Flynn or Johnson in 2015

And complete for and probably win the starting job, going away in next offseason s competition with Fitzpatrick, Flynn/Johnson, a vet signed in the offseason and a 2016 draft pick
