[/h][h=1]LORENZO MAULDIN, OLB[/h][h=3]

STRENGTHS
WEAKNESSES[/h]STRENGTHS: Quick-footed with lower -ody agility and burst in space. Clean footwork and solid change of direction skills as a stand-up defender. Smooth strides off the edge to hit his top speed quickly, occasionally showing the ability to dip and bend. Quick trigger and get-off to aggressively attack gaps. Physical hand use and an improved punch. Trusts his vision with quick reflexes to react to the action, reading plays well to get his hands up and obstruct passing lanes (7 pass break-ups the past two seasons). Heady awareness to locate, track and attack with his eyes always focused on the ball, not the bodies in front of him. Hits like a truck and his pursuit is always in full-go mode. Active, emotional and fiery player with natural leadership traits, looking to educate his teammates. Versatile starting experience at end and linebacker, rushing from a three point stance and also standing up as both a rusher and coverage defender. Self-motivated hard worker who has shown the ability to overcome adversity and keep his priorities straight.WEAKNESSES: Average size, frame and length with limited growth potential. Upper body strength has room for improvement to help his shed technique. Can get locked up and struggles to get his body free. Plays tall and lacks ideal flexibility or pad level off the edge. Needs to better set up his rush and develop his secondary moves to attack with a cohesive plan rushing the passes. Needs to be more reliable setting the edge and not losing contain. Will overpursue and needs to better control his intensity. Snap movements have been inconsistent in the past, both early and late. Durability needs vetted after a number of nagging injuries over his career, including an on-campus moped accident (April 2013), shoulder surgery (spring 2014) and a hamstring issue that plagued him as a senior. Played both defensive end and linebacker as a starter in college and has some tweener traits.

Doesn't sound like a "value pick", but I'll be rooting hard for the kid after the life he's had to live through so far . . .

EDIT:

Pretty sure 3rd rounders are guaranteed close to $1M.

Not trying to be pessimistic (he's my new favorite Jet), but it's nice to know that even the worst case scenario is gonna help change his life for the better . . .

Good pick. He has good size and a nice burst to the QB, just he needs to refine some pass rush skills. 21.5 sacks, played standing up and as a down lineman. We needed a young player at OLB and I think he'll do well.

Have to admit, I was hoping more for Harold. But hearing about Mauldin's past, and hearing how he is crying, tearing up, during his conference call, you cannot NOT root for this kid.

Wasn't my first choice of who I wanted. But I sure am glad this young man is a Jet.

I think of Vernon Gholston when I read about this guy, watch his film and listen to the pundits about him

He is exactly NOT Vernon Gholston. Not Gholst on the measureables. Not Gholst on the motor. He's a football player.

"Mauldin, who had 6.5 sacks and 37 QB pressure last season, is a better player than former Cardinals star Marcus Smith, who was drafted No. 26 overall by Philadelphia last year."

"He overcame a tough childhood and developed a mindset that nothing is going to stop him. He works his butt off and he wants to be great. I'm cheering hard for this kid and I'll bang the table for him when the time is right."

Like most, I'll be rooting for him. But I'm underwhelmed overall with this draft. Sorry, it's just my opinion. I think the risk/reward of going Petty merited that direction.

Also, the trade down killed us. It doesn't always work out for the best when trading down.

No facts JMO but I think he was the guy Maccagnan had targeted when he traded back so what we actually got was Mauldin plus a 5th and a 7th
