Start Trevor Reilly!

This kid was one of our best players in the preseason, certainly one of our best edge rushers along with Lorenzo Mauldin, but Mauldin is hurt and unlikely to suit up verses the Colts, he'll probably need a few weeks to recover considering he was knocked out cold and had to be held overnight at the hospital for testing and observation, thats no mild concussion, so we may not see him for three or four games much less this week verses Indy, but Reilly was his equal as a pass rusher this preseason, if not better, and Sunday he picked right up where he left off in the preseason with a terrific strip-sack of Manziel after he exploded off the edge, and that wasn't the only time he hurried the QB or forced him to scramble out of the pocket. When Reilly got his chance to shine in the 4th Qtr and bring the heat, he did not disappoint.

That said, the Colts are one of the most pass happy teams in the NFL, they have no running game to speak of, surely they know they are not running on the Jets front seven, even good rushing teams and top RB's have a hard time running verses the Jets, so I expect to see a steady diet of passing from Andrew Luck this week, especially in the dome.

Like I said, this is hardly going out on a limb, they are probably the most one dimensional, pass happy team in the league, so when you play the Colts there is no such thing as a situational pass rusher because there's no such thing as passing downs, EVERY DOWN IS A PASSING DOWN for the Colts, so especially in this game your best edge rushing OLB's should be a part of your base defense, and IMO that means Reilly should start over Pace. We don't need a veteran OLB who can set the edge in this game, FOR WHAT, THEY DON'T RUN, we need young legs that can put the heat on Andrew Luck.

Whose with me on this?

I'm with you on this. I'm very impressed with Reilly's speed from the edge. He will only get better with playing time. Pace is good for his age but most of the sacks he gets is from coverage sacks, Reilly brings on pressure.

Yep, in this game you can't depend on coverage sacks because you are dealing with an elite QB who can and will make the throws into tight windows, he's not gonna hold the ball forever waiting for someone to get wide open, so you need an OLB who can fly off the edge and at least force Luck to hurry his throws, if not sack him.

If you're playing smart situational football, Reilly > Pace is the smart play this week.

The more I think about it, I think I would just play a base dime in this game too.

I'll keep Harrison in there just to keep them honest, so running up the middle is not something we're just giving them, and besides, he can at least create some push up the middle and collapse the pocket too, and the edge guys can do the rest. Other than that I want four pass rushers up front and the option to blitz a DB on any given down, they have to guess which one, but we flood the zone with five or six DB's on every play.

Reason being, as I explained in my previous post, its not about setting the edge verses the Colts, its all about two things, pass rush and pass coverage. Anything else and you are doing the Colts a favor. So here's my base defense on Monday night, from which we can do multiple things, but mostly rush and cover:

DE Leonard Williams
NT Damon Harrison
DE Mo Wilkerson
==
OLB Quinton Coples
OLB Trevor Reilly
==
CB Darrelle Revis
SS Calvin Pryor
FS Marcus Gilchrist
CB Marcus Williams
==
NK Buster Skrine
DM Walls or McDougle

Pryor is like another linebacker in the box, you can blitz him or leave him in coverage.

Pagano can't coach and Luck is better by the sports columnist that fawn over him, than he is on the field.
I've never thought of that team as top stuff.
I believe in our GM and HC, they are the real deal. GO JETS!

didn't bowles use the dime as much as anyone in the league last year??

i know he's a fan of dime packages so i suspect we'll see plenty against luck..

I'll tell you something else, if we don't get a better pass rush on Luck than we did on Cleveland's QB's, not counting the 4th Qtr when the pass rush finally started getting there, we will have NO CHANCE to win this game. In fact its a shame that Mauldin got hurt because I would have started him in this game ahead of Pace. Verses the Colts in the dome you don't need a situational pass rusher on 3rd downs, EVERY DOWN is a passing down, especially in that building. It would have been nice if we could have rotated Mauldin and Reilly to get after Luck, but as is I would start Reilly for sure, his skill set off the edge is far more valuable to us than Pace's jack of all trades and master of none.

Thats my opinion, what say you?
Agreed 100%. We need thoroughbreds at LB. True horses and Mauldin and Reilly look like they can fit that bill. Fast, agile and smart pass rushers that can cover also and cause havoc on any if not every down. Coples because he playing out if position worries me that he can't do this. Pace and Harris are getting up there in age and lost a step. Shame Maudlin got hurt but hopefully he will be back soon enough. As far as the game is concerned, Indy will be pissed and looking to take it out on anyone and it just so happens to be us. Doesnt matter how soft they are, if we can't match their intensity in that 1st quarter, maybe even the second they will blow us out the building.

Colts GM is an idiot...he already had Hilton and Johnson and Allen and Fleener at TE..as good as Dorsett might be...no way he should have been pick even if they were worried about Hiltons contract at the time....they have other needs on both lines..especially OL.. there were good OL or even DB that could have helped them better..doesn't mean much for this game but in the long run this year that pick will hurt them....Luck is a good enough Qb and WR can be found later on...and Luck will find ANY wr he has....

Great post and compound that Chuck Pagano is exactly what rex was last year, a sitting duck. Only difference, players wont vouch for him. Alot of rumblings after that Buffalo game on Sunday regarding Paganos relationship with management as well.

If you ask me, Jets have them right where they want'em.

Something to ponder about:

Do the Jets maintain status quo on the back up QB situation in this game with Bryce Petty or do they make a move which many are suspecting in re-signing Matt Flynn or Josh Johnson?

My guy feeling fellas, Jets will not sign a QB. I firmly feel management is content & very comfortable with Bryce in case he is forced into action.

Thoughts?

Jets will sign veteran if Fitz can't go imo. No need to sign a guy if Fitz is playing and Geno on the mend. I'm not sure how comfortable Jets are with Petty when the OC said he doesn't like where he's at right now. Now if Fitz can't finish a game then Petty will have to finish and I'm sure it will be very vanilla offense with lots of handoffs. It's more about roster spots than confidence in Petty, imo.

By the way, the Browns have a top offensive line. We should get more pressure against the Colts bad line

1. That hasn't been mentioned often enough. They are fairly stout up front, and we did a good job against the run, and pass rushing.

I'm with you, I think they stick with Petty. I believe that's the reason why they cut the vets anyway because they believe they can get by with Petty if needed. That was a huge risk to cut those vets in the first place, if they didn't have the confidence in Petty. So I think they just stay as is.

He will but I'm not quite sure Geno goes in over Petty. I don't know if its a given anymore. If that was the case, I think they would have kept atleast one of those vet QBs. I think Geno has to earn or take the #2 spot from Petty on the field. By his play, maturity, character and leadership in practice and we know Geno's maturity, character and leadership is in huge question. Hence the jaw break fiasco!

i really don't see it & LOLz i wish i did!! gailey is on record of saying (i'm paraphrasing) "i don't like where petty is but do like where he's going.."

i believe the jets are knowingly taking a calculated risk that smith will be ready to suit up before petty would be forced into action.. & if petty did have to play the jets would sign someone off the street ASAP, IMO..

if petty is what we're hoping he is his best case scenario is showing us next season.. i don't think that's a bad think at all.. watch, listen, learn & work at becoming a viable NFL QB.. again, IMO..

go fitz!! go jets!!

getting back to Indy... this is a winnable game period, IMHO. I really do not care if Indy is upset/mad/whatever ... We can and should run the ball down their throats because as others have stated their D is piss poor, play physical and error free (max 2 penalties ) we "will" beat them.

We have the makings of a good team.... since the 1st preseason game we have played better. The OL, QB and WR play and communication as well as D OL, LB and secondary has improved each week...

AS the coach and players stated they can and will play better and for me what was really a pleasant surprise was no carping, chest bumping just a general acknowledgement by players and coaches that they won but need to get better. That to me tells me as a franchise we are headed in the right direction.

I'm relatively optimistic. I do think that Luck is great, but he is still prone to throw the ball up for grabs and we now have a secondary that can exploit that tendency. The Jets have already beaten Luck in his career with a far worse secondary. Look at what the Pats did in the playoffs with a defense inferior to ours. This is the type of game where I really think that having Fitz playing instead of Geno makes a big difference. If this game were at home, I honestly think that we'd win easily. But I just feel that Fitz will handle a hostile crowd well. To me, the Colts are a one-man team.
