Agree.

Shell might someday be a decent OT, but he has been horrid this year.

It also, IMO, makes the argument that what petty did this year is devalued because it was done against 2-3rd stringers, a "silly" argument.

When you are hit from the blindside repeatedly by 300 + pounders, it doesn't matter if they are All Pro's , or bubble players. They are very large men.

IMO what Petty achieved this pre-season, under the type assault he was continually under, was very impressive. I don't think he saw 3/4 of the passes he completed as he was knocked to the ground.

I'm with JG13 on this, IMO Petty clearly won the QB non-competition, QB competition hands down. it sould have smith out there last night fighting for his job, and getting killed every time he dropped back.

What has smith shown this year to get a pass on the 4th game? Actually what has smith shown in his 29 starts that indicates there is any value to his having started 29 games?
he's a people person..

The coaches watch all these quarterbacks every day in practice, and know them better than anyone here. Most fans can't tell Brett Ratliffe from Tom Brady in a PS game.

At least this puts an end to all the nonsense about Geno is the next coming of Satan, all the other quarterbacks hate him, all his teammates despise him, The coaches can't stand him and he is a worthless piece of sheet. Management made the call, you don't like it, therefore they botched it. Convenient

hammer, it really is frustrating for a lot of us here the way bowles conducted this so called backup QB compition.. it annoyed the hell out of me that bowles kept watching petty get bum rushed all preseason behind a "send in the clowns" OL lead by shell.. the same guys he didn't put smith in harms way once this preseason.. so the streak continues, smith still hasn't earned a damn thing in his NFL career, 4 years running..

i'm very hopeful this shoulder injury doesn't end up taking anything off petty's fastball..

& my confidence in bowles has been compromised..
Coaches are scared of inexperience and that gets multiplied ten fold at the QB position. Even Parcells, one of Bowles mentors, made that classic mistake the year Vinny went down with a torn achilles in week one. Parcells went right to Rick Mirer based on experience, and he didn't make the switch to Ray Lucas until the season was essentially lost. It was apparent in camp that Lucas was better than Mirer, but Parcells who famously says that "he goes by what he sees" did not trust his eyes on that one, he played it safe and went with the more experienced backup, and it cost us the season. Parcells has acknowledged in retrospect that that was one of his biggest mistakes as a Head Coach, not trusting his eyes and going straight to Ray Lucas. This is not to suggest Lucas was a very good QB, but he was better than Mirer and he should have been the primary backup, and when he finally got tapped on the shoulder because Mirer sucked, the team played a lot better the rest of the way, but not enough to dig us out of the hole Mirer created.

hell, tom tuna play better as our QB then mirer..

i absolutely follow your post.. but at some point i would think a head coach would say to himself..... gee, QB's get head coaches fired.. even ones that are inherited..

so what course of action does bowles take?? he gift wraps smith the backup job because he's had a longer opportunity to suck at being an NFL QB than petty has?? you know, the guy you drafted??

jeezbuz..

Trust me, it doesn't make much sense too me either, but most coaches are spooked by inexperience, especially at the QB position. Unless its a highly drafted QB in the first round and you are given leeway to let him play thru his growing pains, HC's are scared to play inexperienced QB's. Its ridiculous, but they prefer an experienced/proven suckass like Geno Smith.

This has got to be the answer. It certainly wasn't because smith earned anything here

i'm not sure i have enough info to say who won it hands down. i haven't been to a single practice, let alone every single one. i haven't watched a 2second of coaches film, let alone every minute. i haven't been in one meeting room, let alone them all.

that said, from what i saw, i think petty did the better job and should be the 2nd QB. granted emotion probably plays a part as i really have no interest in seeing geno as the #2 QB. rational or not, that's how i feel.

so in the end, i think we arrive at the same place on thinking/waning petty to be the #2.

where i greatly differ is that i still think he should have been out there last night. he needs the reps plain and simple. and most teams play their 2nd string QBs in the 4th pre-season game. heck, brady, brees and russell wilson, amongst others, played last night (granted with starting lines i assume). but they were exposed to injury in the most meaningless of games.

bryce petty needs the work. he should be out there whenever the opportunity arises. that means the 4th pre-season game, especially

With the way he said Geno was the #2 today and the comments about teams doing their due diligence as well as the Jets doing theirs with trade talks.... Makes me think it all talk to try and get something for Geno.... Nothing else makes sense.

Of course Petty should have been out there at some point last night. The 4th game of preseason is for the 2's and 3's. If smith was Bowles selection as #2, he surely should have been the starter. Petty should not have been taking reps when he was.

The original statement here was that Bowles botched the QB situation from jump. What ever he was doing with the QB's, which seem to make little sense to most people, and was in contrast to what has played out historically in the 4th game, seems to have come back an bitten him in the ass. He now has a very promising QB with an injured shoulder. Shoulder injuries for QB's IS NEVER a good thing.

What ever his plans were for smith. Perhaps he was sitting him so he wouldn't get injured for a trade. Perhaps not. What ever they were, he is now probably stuck with smith no matter what he wants.

I feel pretty confident in saying the QB situation from the beginning was handled poorly.

Agreed.... Petty needed to be out there..... I also feel like Smith should have been out there too.... Which plays into my conspiracy of the Jets trying to convince teams Geno is doing well and he's ready to be their backup possible starter and get him traded.... But again what the hell do I know.

I couldnt agree more. I dont want to judge the CS this early with annointing Geno as the back up. They do keep things very "Belichick'esque", VERY INTERNAL.

If they have any intention of possibly acquiring a position of need and Geno may be apart of that deal, why give the media that fuel and stir up the pot that much more..especially here in New York.

I'am with you Lounap23, Somethings gotta give.

I hope you guys are right, but Petty getting hurt really complicates this scenario. We'll see tomorrow I guess.

I completely hear what your saying, but if Mac honestly chooses Smith over Bryce, he'll look like a clueless Draft GM. He distinically stated that Bryce was a developmental player froming from Baylor, he needed to adjust.

Now, seeing Bryce progress and then dumping him would send mix signals to anyone on the team.
Like you said, we will see how this pans out come tomorrow. I honestly feel Bryce made the team with his play, regardless if he played against 3rd stringers. Just feel like the team will look much different come Monday morning.

Oh I agree. I think Petty will be on the team or IR'ed. In all honesty I think they will carry 4 QB's. That may cost a guy like Marshall his roster spot.

I'm still pulling for the plan that this is all an elaborate charade, and some body gives up the "bag of rocks"

This is what I don't understand.

Fans who say the QB position was handled poorly. Bryce Petty was a 4th round draft pick who was fighting for a roster spot. The coaching staff obviously has a more favorable perspective of Geno Smith than the detractors within this fanbase do, as evidenced by naming him the #2 QB after Fitz. Now, obviously the Petty injury helped make that decision easier. But for fans to say that Petty getting injured was a bad coaching decision doesn't add up for me. Petty's injury was a bad break, and had nothing to do with coaching. He needed reps. Bowles gets no blame for this freak injury. Any player can get injured at any time.

As Hobson said, no bubble wrap belongs in this game for a depth player.

You don't see the contradiction in your own statement?

Your mantra is that "no bubble wrap belongs in this game for a depth player" Yet, for some mysterious reason smith was put in "bubble rap" for the 4th game. In contraction to league precedent smith was rested like a starter for game 4, even though according to most of the scribes who tweed every play during practice, and wrote numerous articles about it, and rational fans who actually watched the games, was out played by Petty over the last month.

IMO there are only 2 explanations.

1) Ham is right, and Bowles never had an intention of of playing the best QB, but rather has a phobia of young QB's, and was going with the vet no matter what.

2) Dan is right and the drama was orchestrated to try and get a "bag of rocks" for smith. Either way the plan was a bad one. The Jets now have a promising young QB with a shoulder injury who is either going to lose all his developmental reps for the year by going on IR, or the Jets can't pull off his trade coupe for smith, because the QB with the higher potential is now injured.

Yes, it was not handled well. Best players should play. Petty was the better player this summer, and has by far the higher upside, and future with the Jets. smith has no future here at all

Bottom line is Petty and Hack got the shit beat out of them because the surrounding cast they are playing with is get them killed. Brandon Shell is absolute garbage and needs to spend at least a few seasons in my estimation before he ever sees playing time. Since the first preseason game where Burris flashed, that kid has looked completely pathetic since. He's getting burned all over the field by total nobodies. There's no doubt in my mind that at best Burris is a ST player right now.

But what's most concerning is DARRON LEE. This kid is a 1st round draft choice that played just about the entire game. He was completely irrelevant.

There's no excuse for this. Based on all of this CLAIMED talent by Mac, Bowles, and a shit load of fans, Darron Lee should have popped against the Eagles. He should have been by far and away the best player on the field against the Eagles. Instead, he got blocked into oblivion by OL that probably will not be on NFL teams come Monday. He was barely noticeable.

Anyway, what I am saying is that this team is seriously lacking in depth all over the team. The QB's just cannot get a fair shake right now because they do not have any time to throw. The RB's cannot show their stuff because there's no open holes in front of them. This is a major problem going into the season.

The OL is going to spell the offense's doom...
