Quinton Coples played just 15 snaps yesterday

This is his last year here in NY. The transition to LB hasn't worked quite well. I was hoping Bowles would put him in a position that he would thrive in.

I think Coples is an extremely physically talented football player, but extremely football dumb. If he is put in a position where he has to diagnose plays.... The old hamster wheel doesn't turn fast enough.

He follows the play, makes the tackle etc etc. You never see him blow up anything because he saw a formation and reacted with a decision pre-snap. The only time he makes plays is when he physically beats his man, or has a play designed for him to succeed.

This is the same problem I have with Davis.

Having those two at LB is exactly why it was so important we re signed Harris in the Spring

Yeah

I like Coples, and predicted he would have a break out season in Bowles system.

Doesn't look like it is going to happen.

I thought so too.. Really disappointed in this!!

I don't hate the guy, and in all honesty, he's playing the run well, and causing hurries, just don't understand why he can't close the deal, and get the sack. Rap on him coming out was he just wasn't passionate enough, or mean spirited enough.

Looks like for now at least Bowles is going to replace him, and see if he can find some one to get the sacks.

Reilly didn't play yesterday due to injury, but it seems like Bowles is going to see if he, and or Mauldin can be more productive.

He just never panned out. I didn't expect much from him this season, and he's certainly a goner.

Coples is battling an arm injury. That's probably why he saw limited duty. The bigger problem for him is he seems to be a tweener. He won't break the lineup on the defensive line, and he is limited in open space which doesn't help him at the LB spot. His best attributes are pass rushing and run blitzing, but those skills are specialized and aren't needed every down. Guys like Mauldin and Reilly have the potential to have more skills in space which takes reps away from Coples.

They should just use him as part of the DL rotation. It's obvious the experiment of putting him at OLB just did not work. He was drafted as a DE and actually had pretty good numbers his first year in NY when they were still using him at DE.

I am not giving up on him yet.... I still think at worst he is a great rotational guy and fantastic depth.... Not everyone can be MO and Sheldon.

I'm inclined to agree.

I'm not sure "he's certainly a goner." His play has been pretty good, but disappointing as a pass rusher.

He reminds me a lot of Bryan Thomas who was also a disappointment as a pass rusher, but hung around for a few seasons as a pretty solid player.

I always felt he worked better as an interior lineman. He always seemed to get penetration on the inside.

He's def not a bust, he's serviceable. I say he's certainly a goner b/c Bowles and Co. did not draft him. He's an underwhelming Rex pick. Could he be back? Sure, but I doubt it.

One of the traps we as fans fall into all the time, myself included, is when we draft a guy who appears to have monster physical skills, we tend to anoint him as the next LT, or whoever.

Then when he turns out to be just a good player, and not a super star, we want to hang the bust label on him, and get rid of him.

Personally, I hope he's not going to try and get super star money, and they can get him signed at reasonable money.

Coples can't get the QB and he can't cover in space.

He gets penetration and he forces the QB into a lot of bad throws.... No he doesn't get the sacks but he makes plays that do not show up in the stat line that help the defense. He is a good player.

Exactly, he doesn't make superstar plays but he get penetration. Helps alot in the run game and like I said in my last post, he forces the QB to make bad throws... His plays just don't show up on the stat line.

IMO you can't take a 6'6"/290 DE and make him a OLB ? Jared Allen now with the Panthers flopped as an OLB, or in the Jets case Bryan Thomas & Calvin Pace were stud DE's in College, but very average as OLB's in the NFL. Size does matter in this case, and I watched Coples play @ UNC and Pace @ Wake-Forest to know why.

If we can keep him at a reasonable amount, I hope we do. He's been a good soldier so far. You can't have superstars at every position. Hopefully Mauldin becomes a decent edge rusher because it's the one thing this defense lacks.

He has been an ok player thus far who lacks the burst and closing speed to be a good pash rusher and there are much better options in coverage than Coples. Maybe it's the stats that do show up that had him playing just 15 snaps, stats like sacks and tackles, forced fumbles, recoveries, maybe an interception.
