Should the Jets break up their talented defensive line?

ESPN -- It'll be a tight squeeze in terms of the salary cap, but they should try to keep the Big Four together. They have to make decisions on Wilkerson and Damon Harrison, both of whom are free agents. They're among the top players at their respective positions, so it would be lunacy to let them hit the open market.

Wilkerson, who suffered a broken leg Sunday, probably will wind up with the franchise tag, as the two sides are far apart on a long-term deal.

Harrison considers himself the NFL's best nose tackle, so he probably wants to be paid like it, meaning a contract worth more than $4.5 million per year.

They have an embarrassment of riches (don't forget about Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams), so they could try to use Richardson as a bargaining chip to obtain draft picks.

A lot could hinge on whether he is suspended for an arrest in July.

The problem with them is they are all Bull rushers in my Book. We need someone as a LB for DL that can be a speed rusher.......Like Gas was with Klecko in the old days......Philbin before him

I here ya, think the Jets will move on from Pace, and possibly Reilly even though he should good burst albeit late burst his get off is poor and that is being kind...

Julian Stanford could be our new starter across from Mauldin next year... Add in D. Barnes the UDFA we signed to our practice squad who is that hybrid DE/OLB, leaving us the need for one additional body that we could draft on day 2 unless they like Josh Martin as a backup to Stanford...

We really have a dilemma as I don't see Demario Davis back, maybe Jamari Lattimore but between Henderson and Taiwan Jones we still will need to get speed inside... Davis gives us that but just I dunno can't explain it, just feel they are ready to move on from him...

Is there someone available in free agency that can come in, possibly some ex-Cardinal, ex-Texan, or ex-Dolphin could be targeted...

actually curious if we can snake Olivier Vernon and/or Derrik Shelby from the Dolphins both played under Bowles and Rodgers could welcomed addition but they might be seeking too much $$$...

another possibility is DE Jared Odrick form the Houston Texans could bolster if we move on from anyone...

as for the Cardinals I see a couple of defensive backs and maybe offensive lineman could be targeted but that is about it...

no

out of all the veterans on our offensive line, Mangold is one that I would keep unless we get an offer too good to pass up...

and am talking about draft pick compensation not someone else's left overs...

I'd keep Snacks and one of Wilkerson/Richardson. A lot will depend on the market. Can Richardson, despite his off-field problems, land a top return in a trade? What would Mo's cap hit be if he was franchised? Personally, I'd try to trade Richardson and lock up Mo long-term, with the franchise for Mo as the backup plan.

With other holes, dealing an asset from a loaded unit to fill another void and free up room only makes sense.

there is one destination he we probably can get a solid offer from and most Jets fans might not like it...

Rex Ryan & Buffalo Bills who are about to part ways with Mario Williams...

With Williams basically in the driver seat at Richardson position along with Mo & Snacks I agree this is the future of our defensive line... Retain the services of Leger Douzable and possibly Bowen we could do well moving forward...

So do you do it? Do you deal him to the Bills, have two top-20 picks, and either trade up for a young franchise QB (if you don't believe in Petty) or revamp the OL?

I think you keep the interior guys, Winters-Mangold-Carpenter. You draft a tackle, and either restructure Brick and cut Breno or you cut Brick, and also look to land Mangold's future replacement. Truth is, though, the OL had a pretty solid season. Fitz had fairly good protection, and the ground game was solid. They were 11th in rushing yards, and the second best in pass pro. Age is a concern, but the performance - by those metrics - was solid.

On DL, you still have Mo-Snacks-Williams, and the depth guys. The Jets could have the best combined trenches in the league with a little work.

tough question, but not really a big decision... only way trading Richardson in division would be this year's 1st plus 2017 conditional (4th that can become a 3rd)...

Bills 19th pick
Our 20th pick

This would give us flexibility to take a weapon with one and possibly stock pile the other

Brick is more than likely gone either by trade/release
Breno is simply gone > replacement could be in house Ben Ijalana whom the coaching staff is really high on
Willie Colon won't be back even if he doesn't retire

I say both Carpenter & Mangold are our only starters worth keeping... Winters/Dozier are quality spot starters but are still raw all around interior linemen...

Free Agents like Brady Sowell, Chris Clark, Brandon Brooks, Ben Jones, Bobbie Massie, Lyle Sendlien, Ted Larsen are all possible targets this off season... Wouldn't put it past Maccagnan to try to trade for RFA LT Jeff Adams from the Texans...

On the D Line, Mo - Snacks - Williams are a solid trio add in return of Douzable, maybe we can target ex-Dolphins that Bowles & Rodgers coached in Derrick Shelby and/or Olivier Vernon who could really stack our front 7...

There is a number of key moves that can be made in free agency that will determine how or what we need in the draft...

I would still draft Corey Coleman, WR from Baylor with one of those two first picks and depending on how the big board is laid out then would consider drafting Landon Turner who has been climbing the boards now a mid 2nd round prospect... Probably one of thee best guards in the draft... But would hope they trade back and stock pile... Still acquire Turner and acquire Tackle Kyle Murphy with our 2nd round pick sewing up the line with talent that doesn't need to be implemented immediately...

But that is me... Figure with Richardson's court date soon and ruling he is probably facing league suspension of anywhere 4 games to 10 games next season... He is a great talent but off the field has me selling high as long as we can get it...

And yes I am a Petty backer, think he has what it takes to be that guy... But no need to rush him unless Fitz starts to falter next season... I would consider day 3 of the draft to grab an additional prospect QB, could develop him to be that backup or competitor for Petty... Competition only makes players better no matter what round they are drafted in...

Yes they do and I hate to say but yes they do. Not quite sure and I won't say who they should get rid of but they need speed and coverage ability at the linebacker position. Better receivers, TEs and DBs. That's gotta come from someplace and you have to pay for that so you can't keep paying all the d-linemen if you want to get better at other positions.

Wilkerson is the best of them all. If he can get healthy, you have to find a way to keep him. I'd try to keep Snacks, and probably let Shel go. Love Shel, but can you trust him? I know he's past his prime, but I bet Brick is back after a restructure. Breno should be gone. I think Davis played better towards the end of the year, but he's avg at best. We need and infusion at LB, OL, and special teams.

I agree on Wilk...BUt IMO this was his first great year this year he played the way he should have. I also agree on Shel......ask GMf there was no one more excited to see the jets get him. BUT.........If the jets feel he should go.......like new years... out with the old & in with the new.

Break up Jets Defense? NO, but a LB that can get pressure is needed. Jets Defense yesterday was put in a very bad situation yesterday all in thanks to Gaileys Offensive schemes of 3 & out. This put Jets Defense on the field for 9 minutes in first quarter & was on the field for most of game not using Ivory & having a true RB behind Ivory to give some rest to the Defense. The best Defense cant be on the field all game ! I was proud of Jets D even though they were so tired they still kept the game in reach. Gailey?// needs to go.

unfortunately Gailey and his offense did enough to stick around another year...

as for defense we are not straying from the 3-4 base even tho it would do better for this team to move to a nickel base 4 down linemen... where they can stick with a 3-4 scheme... but Richardson has done more enough to get him removed from this team... This all depends on if they can retain Mo & Snacks...

Yes the defense needs a faster linebacker and coverage safety to be better...

Been saying it for awhile trade Richardson and sign Mo and hopefully keep Snacks. WE need speed at LB in the worst way...I am so tired of seeing our guys get beat like a drum. OL needs help too...

we need to keep our guys because the foundation of greatness is here and needs to continued to be built...

if we can trade Richardson, I would NOT be opposed to trade him to Rex Ryan and Buffalo Bills... Some might be cautious about trading inside the division but Rex did draft him... This kid needs a good environment but he has out stayed his welcome here...

Bills have the 19th pick this season and we know if the draft was redone there is a great chance Richardson would go #1 overall that being said getting an additional pick in 2017 making it a conditional pick from a 4 upwards to a 3 even a 2 could be in play...

That being said this would change how we approach the draft... Last year we were sitting in a position that no one wanted to offer the kitchen sink to move up but mid round there are people like the Patriots that don't have a 1st might be willing to offer a lot to acquire one... Just spitting out ideas... But yes our focus this off season is first free agency possibly acquiring similar age talent to James Carpenter to continue to install a good OL or focusing on the draft for the future of the OL has to be priority well at least for me it is...
