Good QBs play well despite a terrible OL and coach. Sam didn’t. End of story.
I agree to a certain extent. The Jets were a horrible team these past three years and we couldn't or shouldn't have expected miracles but he could and should have shown us more than he did. Good QBs can show something even when there's nothing there. Look at Stafford with the Lions. Of course great QBs can do even more. Look at A. Rodgers in GB, Watson with the Texans or Brady with the Pats. Darnold should have been able to show us more than he did. Not every play was he on his back or throwing from his back or running for his life. His play makers were open more than we think and he did have time to get them the ball in some or most cases, he just didn't deliver for whatever reason. Hopefully he'll do better with the Panthers.

This is fair. I like Sam, and I was pulling for him. And he was put in difficult circumstances here. But three facts led me to hoping for a fresh start:

1. Regardless of the talent around him, he regressed. His last year with the Jets was his worst.
2. When Flacco came in with the same offense and coaches last year, he outplayed Sam.
3. A choice would have to be made about Sam's future and the fifth year option before the team could even see what he did with the new system.

This may have been said already, but I think that because he was such a good guy who didn't blame anyone for his and the team's failures that we let that cloud our judgment. I know I did. I actively supported keeping him, hoping that the new coaching staff and QB friendly system would magically resurrect Sam's career. Not to mention the idea of surrounding him with the draft picks we would have gotten by trading the #2 pick. All of that was a pipe dream and the reality is that we should have moved on, and looking at it objectively JoeD did the right thing for all parties involved. I'm looking forward to see the new QB and what the coaching staff does with him. Lost in all this is that we have a coaching staff who we have high hopes for and one that seems to be in sync with what appears to be a very competent GM.

fact of the matter is this new regime did not want to put all there eggs in a basket with sam.
not because they don't trust him, money factor finalized the situation able to reset the qb finances for the foreseeable future. smart decision maybe but could haunt them if sam has immediate success.
