The Back-up Quarterback battle: Bryce Petty vs Geno Smith

And largely despised by his teammates, or at least he was in college.
HYATT™ has seen that stated in the press but has never been able to actually find a single interview with a single MSU player who ever said any such thingy.
Doesn't that make you wonder where in the phuque the press gets such ideas from?
Okay, so they didn't vote him a team captain - big whupp - the press EXTRAPOLATED from that, that his team mates didn't like him?
Coulda been any number of reasons for that - even that Cook might have said let someone else be a captain.
(He didn't, which is another story unto itself, that you can read HERE.)

The players who did receive the vote -- Shilique Calhoun, Jack Allen and Darien Harris -- insist that Cook is still an important leader of the Spartans.
"I would say that Connor is a captain," Calhoun, a second-year captain, said. "Connor is the captain of this team."
"It's not always about the title with us, it's about going out there and performing and trying to help your team and I think Connor has done that and I think he'll keep doing that."

The Spartans' captains are determined by a player vote each year when the team breaks fall camp. Only players on the team's 12-member "Eagles" leadership council are eligible to become captains.
Cook entered last year as the clear-cut quarterback starter, but was not on the leadership council at the time of the vote and therefore not eligible to be a captain.
This year, Cook is a member of the leadership council, but was not among the top three vote-getters in the team-wide vote taken this week.
Spartans coach Mark Dantonio indicated that Cook was not far outside those top three.
"It's unfortunate you can't vote more people in, but I've always tried to say we're going to take three, because I want that fourth guy to rotate," Dantonio said.

There goes the "Geno filled sunglasses guy again".

"He was money after that"? Really??!! Throwing passes in the dirt, rushing his throws? Playing erratic as usual, with one good throw followed by an atrocious one? Money?

Talk about a guy accusing another poster of writing a "load of crock".

Hey, don't let facts confuse you. Btw, calling me names does nothing to enhance your case. Why don't we stick to facts and opinions rather than juvenile name-calling? The passes thrown in the dirt and being rushed were all in his first two series, which I already said were meh. Look at the film and you will see that after the first two series, he was much sharper and not erratic. Considering that he had played one game in more than a year (the Oakland one), it is not unreasonable to chalk up the early problems to a bit of rust, and he was good after that.

The bottom line is, the geno smith era is over in NY.

Yes, he may be the "on paper" depth chart back up QB opening day, or maybe not. IMO, for sure, he won't be on the roster next year. When Petty was playing/practicing very poorly it was a foregone conclusion that smith would be the back up. It's not that way anymore.

Thursday night, fair or not, smith was booed at home almost as soon as he stepped on the field. He played very badly for 2 series, and looked like he was going to go 3 and out after an 84 yard return. He saved his night with an excellent throw, and excellent catch by Peake, for a TD. Then had a decent final drive that ended in a FG. Fans were still dying to boo him.

Any one who has observed how it has ended for other Jets QB's when the fans turn on them like that look up Chad Pennington, and Mark Sanchez. IMO both better QB's then smith, and certainly better people.

The press, the next day, were more then fair to him in mostly focusing on the nice throw rather then the 2 very bad series. He responded in a very bizarre, and immature manor by refusing to talk to the media for some reason, and now again very oddly seems to be engaging in a one way Twitter war with the media. This seems like a death wish to me. Maybe he's trying to shoot his way out of town. In all honesty it would probably be better for him to be cut at this point and pick up clean with a new team.

Because of Petty's weak start in the OTA's, mini camp , and the first week of camp the Jets are hesitant to announce that there is a genuine QB competition going on at back up, even though there clearly is. They are afraid Petty will revert back to the 2nd year project player he appeared to be in OTA's.

IMO the Jets will open the season with 4 QB's and smith as the announced back up, for now, as Bowles likes to say.

It also wouldn't stun me if the season goes side ways, it might be Petty that steps in for Fitz. Petty will be under contract to the Jets next season, smith won't

You must have gone to a different game than I did. There was booing but it was very mild and only at the start. Not even worth mentioning. I've seen a lot of guys booed off the fields of Shea and both Giants Stadiums. This came nowhere near to those incidents. I will concede, however, that there were not many people there to boo and it was way to hot to even make the effort so let's see what happens on 8/27

Also remember, petty want receiving many meaningful reps. That has changed, and he should improve with increased reps, but he also needs to go against the 1s to prove if he cab be a backup or not.

There weren't that many people at the game so of course the booing wasn't at the magnitude it would be if the stadium was packed, but those who were there were very vocal, and very noticeable on the broad cast. Clearly smith noticed it , and is responding in a very immature manor. Which is one of his hall marks.

Geno Smith nearly intercepted… and the boo birds coming raining down again. #Jets

Geno Smith -- 1-for-4, 8 yards. And he's getting booed probably from the same ppl who wanted to make him the starter during Fitz's absence.

Rich Cimini ‏@RichCimini Aug 11
Geno Smith, shaking off boos, throws a 17-yard TD to rookie Charone Peake. Terrific throw, Small window. #nyj

"On Smith's first two possessions, the quarterback looked a little rusty. He completed just one of five passes, and nearly threw two interceptions. The fans in attendance reacted with groans and 'boos' after each pass failed to find its intended target. "

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/08/jets_geno_smith_booed_by_fans_responds_with_touchd.html

Smith was booed by the sparse home crowd after two early incompletions (yes, really), but he ignored the rude welcome and fired a 17-yard touchdown pass to Charone Peake in the Jets' 17-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars

http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-j...geno-smith-is-booed-but-throws-td-in-jets-win

Smith heard a chorus of boos during the contest, but he played alright. He finished the game with 79 yards and a touchdown on 8-14 passing.

http://jetswire.usatoday.com/2016/08/12/geno-smith-bails-on-the-media-following-jets-preseason-win/

The real point isn't that he was booed, which he was, but that the media didn't harp on it, and rather talked more about his good throw to Peake. Yet smith has decided, because he is butt hurt abut the booing, to not talk to the media, but immaturely bash them, not face to face, but through Twitter. Like it's their fault he was very bad his first 2 drives.

Cimini is just an outright troll at this point. I get it, he likes neither the Jets nor their fans. But I recall very few swing voters, as it were, who wanted Geno when Fitz was out.

AS has been stated before common sense and logic is either Petty will be the backup or the Jets wll carry 4 QBs......

Mac is not gonna give up on his QB he drafted knowing it would be year 3 before you see the fruits of your labor...... And Hackenberg as a development Kid as well isn't going anywhere. Mac is stacking the deck with highly talented QBS that need polish and has faith in Gailey and Patullo to develop these kids... Short term pain for lomg term gain.... Both of these guys are extremely talented and extremely smart... Mac is betting on one of them to be the franchise guy..... I would bet my life on Petty making the team... Regardless of what some on here and many beat writers are reporting.

LMAO, the "Facts" are very clear my friend, his time here with the J.E.T.S will be coming to it's very much anicipated conclusion.

"Early problems to rust"? Damn, that must be some harsh rust dating back to when he was drafted in '13.

To keep things in its perspective, just look at what he's doing now. He continues to draw attention to himself. Now waging a boycott towards the media. Then tweeting some BS on Sunday.
This guy is all about himself RBF. You can tell the locker room was relieved when Maccagnan re-signed Fitzpatrick. Rightfullyso.

He should have just answered the questions instead of running away after that "Sharp" game he played saturday night from reporters like some "Juvenille" little bitch that he is when it's time to confront a situation.

But it's no surprise, it's Geno just being Geno.

Anyone remotley thinking Mac will cut Petty focus on this:

What kind of message would that send to this years second rounder Christian Hackenberg? Would management want this kid who hasn't even taken any where near as many snaps as Bryce did, compete for the starting role in '17? Well, what if he doesnt make the neccesary progress, would the same fate come of him as Bryce if in year two Management cuts the kid from Baylor?

It makes absolutley no sense. This organization is banking that both Hackenberg and Petty learn more than enough from the consumate proffesional in Fitz, not Geno, who knows his end is near, hence his bitchy attitude. Plus, over paying for an above average QB two years in a row would drive Woody Johnson nuts, knowing they could have used that money else where to help reinforce the teams weak links if Bryce is ready to take over at the helm.

I expect Bryce to continue to progress to the point he will be named the back up. Then come 2017, he will battle Ryan Fitzpatrick (if he re-signs at a decent amount) for the starting nod.

I so much want Geno to do well enough for someone to send us a 6th rounder for him!

I think the biggest factor for Geno was stated by NYJETSDAN16 above and that's how relieved the locker room was when Fitz resigned...

IF Geno is a problem in the locker room. If Geno is someone teammates don't want to be around.... Does anyone believe Mac and Bowles want this guy around 2 young talented QB's they are developing... Hell no... Maybe pure speculation but all signs point to him needing a change of scenery and this might be a case of Geno being the best option at backup but it's becoming addition by subtraction... His presence alone might be stunting and/or slowing the growth of both Petty and Hack... Due to negative attitude, less reps to go around. Etc...

Good post MJ

I think Petty is starting to win the media over (see the thread I just posted on today's 3 stars) Connor Hughes, who is one of the most logical scribes IMO, seems to be getting very high on Petty.

I honestly can't blame the media for starting to write Petty off. he had very bad OTA's, and mini camp. Up until 2 weeks ago he looked very bad. After his 0

After watching the Jags game again, I have no problem saying Bryce Petty WAY outplayed Geno. For me, Geno looked like his same, absent minded self. Bryce Petty looked decisive, he looked in charge, he played with a sense of urgency, he has a better arm than Geno. But most of all, Bryce did not do any of the dumb things Geno does with the football. He also elevated the play of the surrounding players on the field. Geno could not do that with better talent hands down.

I think we are officially watching this QB competition start to tilt in Petty's favor.........

You may very well be right.
i honestly believe it would be in everyone's best interest (including the fan base) to part ways with smith before the season starts..

provided petty can win the backup spot, of course..

i think it's fair to say, friday will be the biggest game of petty's life..

go get em kid..

IMO, bowles/gailey would be fools not give petty a chance with at least the 2nd teamers..

the kid has earned a shot to show he can be fitzpatrick's backup this season.. period.....

l believe this is the route they will take come Friday evening. This front office is very close to the vest when it comes to any news or tactic on how they address certain issues/plans. Unlike their predecesors, they don't feed the media any thing. How Maccagnan handled the signings of Mo and fitz is just a mere glimse of that.

Ditto for the Non-2nd string QB competition "competition". This organization will not apease the media. They will be straight up aswering questions. "YES, GENO SMITH IS RYAN FITZPATRICKS BACK-UP." The curve ball is then, why is Bryce handling more snaps than Geno?
The answer is simple on how this new regime operates. Just read between the lines and the media will get the answers they need.

A) Geno is auditioning for other teams at this point. Teams that don't have a young gun that is learning the ropes. A team that needs some sort of Veteran presence. Ala Jason Campbell, Rex Grossman type of QB. Geno becomes expendable to be traded.

B)The way Geno is acting with the Media is not how this regime works. You don't give them any material to spotlight an individual to over shadow a team oriented locker room.

C) The reps that have been given to Bryce may also be punishment to Geno as he was probably spoken to behind closed doors on Sunday after his most recent tweet.

Friday nights game will demonstrate if this coaching staff is comfortable to see how Bryce is developing vs the 2's of the Washington Redskins. If Geno comes in for Fitz, then what has transpired within these past two practices were just meaningless. In which i dont believe is the case.

They have given Petty the reps because he's earned it and it's "THEIR" guy they're investing the time with, not a foregone conclusion with the antics of the Tempertantrum Geno smith. It's reached it's limit folks. This GM and coach wont and will not tolerate it. Two years in a row that Geno is grabbing the tabloids for the wrong reasons with the media. 1st the punch and now the Boycott to reporters.

some team in the next two weeks will have a devastating injury to either their starter or backup and will be looking for someone and maybe Macc can sell Geno for a 5th, or 6th round pick even if it is conditional...

at the end of the day Smith should of never been drafted not by us anyway since he didn't have the resume that showed he had pro potential...

can't wait until they get rid of him...
