The Back-up Quarterback battle: Bryce Petty vs Geno Smith

One more game and even more convinced that not only is Geno Smith very much in a QB competition with Bryce Petty. He's also LOSING that competition.

Right now, Bryce Petty does a better job than Geno with 3's than Geno does with 2's.

Now with the apparent logjam at WR.......I think they are going to keep Robbie Anderson, Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Quincy Enunwa, Jalin Marshall, Charone Peake, and Smith on the PUP list? The front office will not have the luxury of keeping 4 QB's, not that ever did anyway.

And meanwhile, Geno continues to make the same bad decisions with the football he was making in his rookie season. I mean come on? How could anyone defend this guy at this point?

After watching Petty last night, I was sold. He looks like he's made the necessary leap from year one to this point. He's got some work to do on a few things, but I'm 100% behind him being a backup to Fitz if that's the call.

Geno was uninspiring. Terrible INT. I think he can be a backup somewhere, and wouldn't complain if he stayed on one more season here, but I also wouldn't object to moving on. Petty instilled that much confidence in me.

... and Petty would have scored three TD's in the second half if Sudfeld didn't fumble away a 1st & Goal inside the 10.

If Geno is the #2 or even on the roster week 1, then this coaching staff and front office may not be what I was hoping they were...SMART!!

I watched the redskins broadcast

After the pick, Joe Theisman spoke about wanting to be there to go over film and ask Geno what he saw that led to that pass.....

Just finished watching the game..... So my quick thoughts... We are definitely letting Geno and Petty battling it out... the pass to run ratio, hell it didn't exist we threw the ball 90% of the time with Geno and Bryce.... With that said.. Geno looked like a rookie and Petty looked good.

Geno actually played as if he didn't care

Petty was 16-26 could have easily been 18-26 as 2 passes were perfect and dropped and may have actually should have been 19-26 as he threw a slant in the 4th qtr that I forgot which WR aligator armed it as he was about to get blasted.. But that happens.. He missed some open guys but overall he has shown the improvement that I believe keeps him on the roster and looking like he will be the #2 if things keep going as they are this camp

That fumble was awful... But that pass by Petty and the catch by Anderson for the TD was so NICE!!!
Gotta be on the roster.... None of them get to the PS

same here. Petty has improved and has shown some upside. Geno is more of the same. I know both are playing with less than stellar Oline but they have had chances to impress

Petty's problem so far is that his accuracy is inconsistent. Once he get some consistency he will be an even better qb. He made some questionable throws but overall looked good

If Bryce is progressing at the rate that is the way management has intended, imagine how better he will be when he finally gets his opportunity with the ones.

I haven't had a chance to watch the game yet, but from all accounts I have read Geno was pretty bad and Petty was impressive. I'm as big a Geno booster as there is here (as I'm sure you've noticed :) ), but if Geno is not going to show progress and take his opportunities to impress, I'm perfectly content with letting Petty seize the #2 role. Petty has got all of the tangibles and intangibles to be a good QB, if he's already started to get it in year two, that is only good for the Jets.

The only thing at this point is evaluating Petty against 1's or 2's. Smoking third stringers must be taken in context. Although I must admit, I loved Petty's pocket awareness and strong arm. The play that really stuck out for me was the play where he avoided a viscous pass rush, and managed to roll left and hit Bostick for 8-10 yards. That was very impressive. He didn't fold under pressure. He made a play out of nothing.

Very encouraging.

Petty definitely had some very impressive moments last night, and I think it is very telling that he came into the game in the 2nd quarter and played the entire second half. They are getting a good look at him and he has definitely outplayed Geno.

It will be interesting to see if he is the first QB off the bench next week to relieve Fitz. Let's see how things play out in practice this week.

Also loved him standing in the pocket getting blasted while throwing a pinpoint accurate pass to Sudifield for the TD... he put it over the LBs and in between the safeties... Vey impressive pass and play overall. I am a huge Petty fan have been since before we drafted him....... This kid just has it... and honestly even at Baylor he was Favre like... first series was always ?? but then he settles into the flow of the game and just makes plays....He found Bostic and Sudiefield in the same game, hell same drive... Was there one game last year where a 2 TE's had a reception... Not counting Enunwa since he is not a TE lol

I posted this in the thread about Petty being Fitz back-up based on last evening performance... I feel that it applies here too...

I been reading other site comments (pages and pages) on Geno and Petty's performance and hands down people know the competition for #2 is essentially over. To be fair last week I think was close but Geno got the nod. This week after receiving the bulk of the reps Petty clearly - repeat clearly - outplayed Geno.

After 4 years in the NFL Geno simply has NOT gotten better... I will not repeat the litany of his issues again because we all know what they are but I will say he seems to have regressed emotionally "if that is possible" because he was "thin" skinned to begin with. His facial expression, body language are that of a broken man...

IMHO it's time to cut him.. based on last nights performance his market value is 0 so we can save a 1mm on the cap by just cutting him as well as, probably (just my suspicion) making the locker room a better all around place.
