have to look at this from a different angle...

Mo Wilkerson coming off a devastating injury seems he is almost back to form but was hindered throughout the year with lingering effects from said injury... Maybe he was ready to come back as the doctors and he thought, because his mental state seemed to be holding him back from giving 1000% effort...

Sheldon Richardson when Mo was either unavailable or deactivated, he showed up in big ways... But the coaching staff did him no favors by using him as a hybrid edge rusher standing up as an outside linebacker... Sheldon does have the athleticism to pull it off but his awareness as a linebacker is sub par at this point of his young career... Basically he becomes a liability in coverage...

Leonard Williams is continuing is development and is producing but it takes more than one player to be a dominate force...

Steve McClendon has had some nice moments this season but it has been overshadowed by blustering bungles of plays they have let get away from them...

Deon Simon this year has shown up in a few key moments proving his development is far ahead of schedule...

Excuses for this unit is not on their deficiencies of unable to get pressure but the rest of the defenses inability to give the d-line that one more second to get the pressure into the backfield... Our corners are sub par learning on the job, while one corner has literally stated he is out to the pasture...

Linebackers are in a transition period at the moment, they show flashes now and again but aren't consistent...

Overall as horrible at times this defensive line looks they are one of the best run defenders in the league statistically speaking... We need to stick with either the 3-4 or 4-3 base defensive alignment and then make the proper rotations to keep everyone on the field throughout the game to constantly bring the pressure from up front allowing the rest of the defense to work off their success and maybe we can build upon moving forward...

The problem is the scheme... as gmfl369 pointed out a bit..... We have had Mo Lined up at 4-3 DE.... He is not a 4-3 DE... We have had Sheldon lined up at OLB... He is not an OLB.... especially when we are in a 4-3 D... The 2 best games the DL played this year was the game Sheldon missed and we were in a 3-4 most of the time and the game Mo missed and we were in a 3-4 most of the time..... Rogers and Bowles are trying to get all 3 of the big guys on the field at the same time and it is causing us to play 3-4 guys out of position every time we are in a 4-3 most of the time....

And Rogers finally figured out how to use Mauldin in the last 4-5 games and he has been playing better.... The DL will be fine once we stick to the scheme these guys are built to play.

G I agree 3/4 with what you say......But they did not sit out the 1Q for being in the choir. Wilk is a leader or I thought he was. Maybe the injury was to his head. You know how excited I was on us drafting 91 but he is a loser too.

Now Leonard Williams is going to be good. He may be my fav. Jet. The others are Ok but again the best DL player is on the Giants at this time.

This line should be a 4-3

Mo doesn't fit a 4-3 DE.... Neither does Sheldon.... Williams is athletic enough to do it..... So what would the 4-3 look like.... Even if we move Mo and Sheldon inside with Williams at DE who is the other DE..... we don't have another 4-3 DE on the Roster.... Let alone our LB's are built for the 3-4 as well with only Lee versatile enough to play OLB in a 4-3.... We need to be a 3-4 all the time and rotate Mo, Sheldon, and Willams to keep them fresh.. Keep Lee and Harris inside and Jenkins and Mauldin outside with Catapauno spelling both of them

I keep saying this I believe that Mo would be perfect as Todd Bowles new nose tackle, just because he is versatile run defender that can push the pocket... This would open up things for both Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams to play the end positions...

Our depth with Deon Simon, Mike Catapano and veteran Steve McClendon would serve as good depth behind those three...

Of course when McClendon comes in his only true position is nose tackle so that would move Mo over to DE while giving one of the other two a break... Simon on the other hand looks versatile as well with limited experience at the DE position... Catapano is on the lighter side as a 3-4 DE but he has the explosiveness of the snap to be effective...

At the end of the day this allows Bowles and Rodgers to get the most from the d-line, while allowing his linebackers hit those gaps/lanes to bring the pressure at the QB and stretch rush attempts...

I don't see Sheldon in the picture next year as MM will move him for a #2 or hopefully late #1. He's a very good player but very redundant, and in the salary cap era not good cap management. Besides, as stated above our defense has been most effective when one of the 'top 3' is on the sidelines. I would rather see Mo and Leo as 3-4 DEs, SMac and Simon splitting time at NT and drafting a true edge rusher to mix in with LMauldin and Jenkins. We also have a couple of PS and IR'd (LThomas) guys who can hopefully be rotational help at DE.
