I just think with Hack getting his ass beat in college he will be more prepared in the NFL. I think it taught him a lot. I still want him to be the day one starter because he beat out Fitz.

+1. I'm hoping for the same thing here. With the mental hardships he went through at PSU, it's either made him into a tuff minded pro that's ready to go from day one or a shell shocked chump who needs a year or two. I'm thinking from his interviews, watching videos clippings, looking at his stats from year two to three and trusting in the Jets regime, we got the better of the two options. What would make it so sweet is if Fitz did resign at the Jets asking price and Hack beat him out anyway. That would leave no doubt that he is ready to go game 1. Pipe dream maybe but then again, maybe not!

From the table of Hackenberg's 3 year stats @PSU below you can see that his Soph season (Franklin's 1st) was a complete disaster. I believe he was sacked an incredible 44 times that year. His Junior year, he started to turn around the TD:INT ratio even though he was sacked 38 times. What I haven't been able to find is the number of times he fumbled, as the 'small hands' comment from earlier got me curious.

Year Class Pos G Cmp Att Pct Yds Y/A AY/A TD Int Rate
2013 FR QB 12 231 392 58.9 2955 7.5 7.4 20 10 134.0
2014 SO QB 13 270 484 55.8 2977 6.2 5.3 12 15 109.4
2015 JR QB 13 192 359 53.5 2525 7.0 7.2 16 6 123.9
Career 693 1235 56.1 8457 6.8 6.5 48 31 121.4

I looked it up and if I'm correct, Sanchez hands size is 10.25 and Smith is 9.25 and they fumbled all the damn time. Never mind the fact that Vick hands are 8.75. I don't know if all three of them fumbled a lot because their just stupid or can't take a hit or wasn't smart enough to wear gloves or a combo of all three but there it is. So make of it what you will. With Hack hands size only being 9 inches period, what will that mean for him on the football field? Crazy thing about it is players like A. Rodgers, B. Farve, R. Wilson and C. Newton hand size are about the size or alittle bigger or smaller then Sanchez and they hardly fumble at all. Maybe their just not stupid, I don't know?

Hand size, Hardship LOL My god you think this guy played football in the middle east. Lets not make excuses for him already How many guys enter the NFL with real hardships. Lets face it we need to see him on the field We can beat this to death but lets let the poor boy play

Guys, enough with all the talk about hand size. This is football, not a presidential campaign!

FLORHAM PARK The Jets on Saturday held their second day of a three-day rookie minicamp, and the last day that was open to reporters.

Here are six things we observed about second-round quarterback Christian Hackenberg, with the obvious caveat that this was one rookie minicamp practice in early May, so don't be a fool and freak out about any of this.
(And here are the Hackenberg observations from Day 1, on Friday.)

The bad sideline throws.
In a basic drill (the quarterbacks throwing to wide receivers), Hackenberg missed badly on three consecutive sideline throws, overthrowing them all. He connected on the fourth in this series. Overall, Hackenberg had mixed results on his sideline throws Saturday. He connected on some, but missed on others. Something to watch, maybe, for future practices.

Rebounded well. On his first pass of 11-on-11 team periods, Hackenberg sailed a pass high over the middle for Charone Peake. But then he connected on his next five passes to close this portion of team period plays. The first of those five completions was a pretty throw, from the far hash to the opposite sideline. The pass traveled about 30 yards and landed in Montario Hunter's hands.

Fantastic deep ball. The last of those five completions was a beautiful deep ball, about a 45-yard completion, to Robby Anderson. This was the first deep ball Hackenberg attempted Saturday afternoon. Hackenberg clearly has prodigious arm strength. Throwing these deep balls is not a challenge for him. Hackenberg dropped this pass right in there for Anderson.

Quick release. Hackenberg looked just fine with the quick-release stuff in 7-on-7 work and team periods. Hackenberg's quick trigger was most notable on a 7-on-7 pass that actually fell incomplete. But Hackenberg uncorked the thing about 50 yards, to Anderson. And this probably would've been a completed pass if cornerback Kendall James hadn't grabbed Anderson, and drawn a penalty flag. This was a picture-perfect spiral pass from Hackenberg, deep down the sideline.

Impressive velocity. Hackenberg has a strong arm, as you know, so he throws the ball very hard. He zipped a pass over the middle to Quenton Bundrage that should've been caught, but was dropped. It was a fairly challenging deep throw over the middle. Hackenberg put it right on the money, but Bundrage couldn't come up with it. He's an undrafted free agent, like Anderson. Hackenberg also put nice zip on the ball during his final throw of practice. He stepped up in the pocket, avoided pressure, and hit Peake over the middle. A well-placed ball.

The interception. Hackenberg on Saturday threw his first interception of rookie minicamp. It came on a quick, short pass to running back Romar Morris. The ball was high. It deflected off Morris' hands, and safety Alex Wells hauled it in for a pick six. This — like pretty much everything else that happened Saturday — is not a big deal.

I've got to believe that all of this was expected by the coaching staff. Hackenberg is very moldable clay and its up to Gailey and Pasullo create a finished product. Don't expect it to be this year though.

So if the Jets decide to wait until the third round to try and get him, is it no longer a reach and a great pick. Provided someone else didn't pick him up before them.

I really think it's hard to "reach" on many picks after the 1st round. Saying somebody may be there in the 3rd or 4th instead of the 2nd is completely subjective. Nobody knows how these teams have players ranked.... What if the Titans had a 1st round grade on him but didn't take him because they were more concerned about need, and the fact they took Mariota last year.

You can't call a pick a reach until they gave success or failure on the field.

Interesting, they seem to have taken the video down.

Chad's been hanging around the Jets an awful lot lately. Pennington also works for T E S T football academy as an instructor. I hope these young QB's are taking advantage of his services. I think Pennington would be a good guy to learn from
i think pennington would be a hell of a college or pro coach if he wanted to do it..

His father was a coach I believe, and he said he would never want to do it full time. He must like teaching though because he teaches for T E S T.

Guys that played in the league for a while with out great natural tools are usually the best QB teachers. They had to do it with their smarts
