The New York Jets should trust Geno Smith to lead team in 2016

PFFanZone -- Geno Smith is the answer to solve the New York Jets quarterback puzzle. Many Jets fans won’t agree with me, but who wants to deal with a prima donna quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick or an unproven one in Robert Griffin III?

Fitzpatrick is nuts if he think he can squeeze $15 million out of New York. The Jets are willing to pay $7 million, maybe $8 million, but that is far as they should go. Fitz feels jilted. Kirk Cousins is getting $19 million guaranteed being franchised and Sam Bradford and Brock Osweiler are getting $26 million and $37 million guaranteed respectively. What makes matter worse, Chase Daniel signed a $12 million contract to be a backup.

The market for quarterbacks have opened up and I can see why Fitzpatrick feels the need to get paid. However, Fitzpatrick isn’t the answer in New York.

Geno Smith is.

The Jets should pass on Robert Griffin III as well. He is young at 26 years old and has tons of upside. But he is damaged goods. Washington made sure of that. You don’t know what you are getting if you sign him to a contract. Are you getting the rookie RG3? Or, are you getting the shell shocked, injury prone RG3? Plus, Griffin III is similar to Smith in terms of athletic ability and passing. Why would you sign a clone of what you already have in-house? photo courtesy via Zimbio Geno Smith is the answer.

In a game against the Raiders last November, Smith was 27 for 42 for 265 yards throwing two touchdowns to one interception. He also rushed for 34 yards on two carries. Those are solid numbers and the Jets will only be better in 2016 after barely missing the playoffs.
Smith had a rocky 2013 and 2014. In those two seasons, he had 34 interceptions compared to 25 touchdowns. Those aren’t good numbers, but I’m thinking now Smith understands NFL defenses and should have a better grip on reading coverages and exploiting mismatches.

Smith will be surrounded by better weapons. Matt Forte was signed and can run the ball and an effective pass catcher out of the backfield. Brandon Marshall is a proven wide receiver coming off a 1,500 yard season. The top receivers that Smith had in 2013 and 2014 was Jeremy Kerley and Eric Decker.

However…

When the Jets draft at 20, they should look to draft […]

Bowles and Chan were willing to start Geno last year, I guess it wouldn't be totally shocking.

The Problem with Smith was on full display in the Raiders game. Terrible decision making in big moments....Stares down his receivers forever. Never knows to throw the ball away. Holds on to the ball forever. Takes unnecessary sacks

Fitz albeit tends to make bad decisions as well at times but a lot less than Geno... He gets rid of the ball quick. Very rarely takes a bad sack. And he goes through his WR progressions quickly...

Listen Smith has the talent to be very very good but I just don't see him correcting those issues..

And for the record Sanchez was ruined in years 3 and 4 by the FO and Rex thinking he was ready to carry an offense by himself... I see Sanchez like Fitz.... His last 3-4 years are going to be above average... In the right system.... Kubiaks system is built for a guy like Sanchez and dare I say it, Fitz as well.

Don't think so. I think if the Jets have better options, and they are trying to find them, Geno Smith will not start another game for the NY Jets unless injuries to other players force their hand.

THAT alternative would be like every player and fan being subjected to daily prostate exams. It would be absolutely HORRIBLE and nothing short of pathetic to watch that BUM quarterbacking the Jets again.

Geno Smith is a BUM and I'm sorry but the jury is very much in on this POS.

I think the writer of that article needs to get a job.

You thought Geno was bad in the Raider game? Wow. Jets fans are tough critics. I'm not advocating going with him and Petty by any stretch. But I thought Geno was the last guy to blame in that game. His numbers were pretty respectable. It was the rest of the team, especially the defense, that should've been called out for that putrid performance. We got thrashed by a mediocre team. A pathetic team showing.

Whatever. I'm so tired of arguing this point. Nobody is changing their minds about this guy. The invective will continue, so I'm just gonna throw up the white flag on this particular player.

I never said he was bad.... You can use his overall stats to say hey if you give me a QB that can throw for 260 yds a game 2 tds a game and 1 int a game I'll take the stats......I was pointing out that when the game was close and we needed the QB to be smart with the ball and make plays he didn't... That's Geno's MO..

AND I said Geno has the talent to be very very very good. And I would root for Geno if he becomes the starter over Petty this year if we don't sign Fitz.... My opinion, albeit my opinion means very little cause I have no idea what progress the FO may have seen from Geno after the OAK game, is I don't see GEno improving on those things..... I hope I am wrong, if he is the starter.

I would like to add some context and nothing more to Geno's performance in the Oakland game. If memory serves, he had no snaps during the exhibition games, so the Oakland game was his first live action of the season. I think he gets a bit of a pass. I also don't think that the FO and CS would be playing hardball with Fitz if they didn't have some fallback option. Maybe Smith has improved enough under Gailey's tutelage in their eyes to suffice as the starter. We can rant and rave all we want about Smith and his performance under the non-existent guidance his first two seasons, but Gailey has been known to coax 'best' seasons out of some marginally talented QBs. Who's to say he can't do the same with Smith. Remember also that Smith came from a very 'non-NFL' system at WVU so that compounded his struggles. He could also be cut right after the draft if someone like Lynch or Cook is selected, and Fitz re-signs. There are so many unknowns for us right now, so I am taking the position that MM and TB make the right decision whatever it is and I will be comfortable with it.

Definitely not agreeing with this. Although I will say it's just because and only because his play and decision making has sucked overall the past two years and his maturity obviously sucks with the IK situation last year. That was just stupid! While others wishes to not see him on the field in a Jets uniform I question otherwise then just his play, decision making and maturity.

Leaving it off that note, I'd rather see Petty on the field this year if he's ready over Fitz, Kaep, RGIII or Geno. We all know what their about and none of them appear to be the answer. Although Kaep, RGIII and Geno are still young enough to grow into the answer but I DOUBT THAT SERIOUSLY. We haven't seen what Petty is about so if he can give us atleast a average playing season then let the kid play. Hopefully he grows more as the season goes on and the preceding years after that.

I don't think Fitz is a prima donna first of all. The whole team respects him. Brick is supposed to make 14 M this season and Fitz shouldn't ask for 15M. I'm sure the negotiation process will play out in the middle and Fitz will sign. The problem is our team gives away the store to guys like Revis and Brick and all of a sudden the starting QB can't get paid the avg starting QB salary. Fitz has been a role model for the other QBs and team. He is the most educated and intellect on the team which has ripple effects in the locker room. If Fitz plays we make the playoffs if not I doubt it.

Respect your opinion but I don't agree with it. IMO Fitz is not taking this team anywhere, his best year was last year and he failed miserably in Buffalo. He is a very seasoned veteran and you can't choke it that situation. I think they should move on if he doesn't want to play for the low money as the backup /temporary QB that I believe he is.
The team will respects anyone when you win 10 games. He is a JAG QB who had one decent year against some bad football teams (and a couple that were down at the time). Law of averages will prevail and he will have a bad season in all likelihood.
I'd rather see the future QB win 6 games, that show promise, than have Fitz win 8.
