You are right, the nfl is not friendly to experiments, you sign the guys you need for your team, and you play who you believe is the most likely to win.this is by far the biggest issue i have with smith supporters.. everything is always based on conjecture.. forget any & everything that was wrong with smith on & off the field.. forget all that stuff, this is a brand new day!! can smith play better with the current talent available?? it's possible.. but i could say the same for petty or hackenberg getting the job done in gailey's system with our offensive weapons too..
is it likely based on what we've heard about where they are in their development?? not in my eyes but what the hell, i'll take a page out of the smith supporters playbook.. who here or any other jet board can tell me with any certainty that either or both petty & hackenberg wouldn't play well this season.. why not?? both kids are big, pretty mobile, bright with big arms.. other 2nd & 1st year QBs have gotten the job done before..
what is not conjecture is fitzpatrick has been effective in gailey's system with last season's talent..
BTW, the talk about playing smith in his contract year to see if the light has turned on?? that's a nice chance to take when you aren't putting yourself in position to lose a high paying job at the top of your field if things turn out badly.. bowles & maccagnan don't have that luxury.....
