UPDATE: Plan if Fitzpatrick signs elsewhere? - Fitz and Jets are far apart on deal

Cimini just posted a story about Bradford. He and Fitz have the same exact agent, so the idea is that the Bradford deal did not shock Fitz and insiders still put Fitz in the 8-10 mark. We may not like it, but that is what he's worth. The negotiation will be on front loading, back loading, and guaranteed amounts. I'll take it.

The fans may have a negative reaction to whatever Fitz gets in an extension. But ultimately, it's what Woody and Macc feel he's worth. Do you want to roll the dice with Bryce Petty or Geno Smith next year? Or do you want to take your chances with Fitzpatrick and Chan Gailey? There's no easy answer here. But as a fan, I want to see a team with a chance every single year. We've got a good defense and some skill players on offense. We can win now with a decent QB. I say stick with Fitz, draft another young QB, and stay competitive.

I don't want to tear down this house and hope for prosperity in 2-3 years. But that's just me.

8-10 sounds pretty fair to me.. closer to 8 with the deal boosted with incentives sounds even better..

i have no problem with a guy getting what he earns..

but obviously i don't speak for the jets or fitzpatrick, so.....

If Fitz signs elsewhere, the Jets will be so f*cked that they might as well mail in the season. They will be the odds on favorite to get a top 5 pick.

I don't know where pretty is at, I will only know by what coach and gm do. I think they want petty to show he can start, but don't expect to see it until year 3.i think the ngl is all about depth. Geno is young, knows the offense, has starting experience, a strong arm, and to date has made bad decisions under pressure.

I think we sign Fitz under 12 for sure. I think trading mo makes us better now and long term, but only if there's a good trade to be had. Having a great de doesn't make you a winner, without the qb you have nothing. If you have a weak unit you'll never win the super bowl. Right now we have one linebacker, we need 4,we have 2qbs under contract, no rbs that can start, and no cap room. Something has to give for us to field a competitive team next year.

I believe a 2 yr $15 Million contract should be suffice...

$9.75 Million cap charge in 2016 fully guaranteed...
$5.25 Million cap charge is base salary in 2017 with the premise he is the backup... If he is named starter then the team can give him a signing bonus... Otherwise this amount is a solid number for a veteran backup as insurance...

a player can get a second "signing bonus" without restructuring the contract??

stipulation in the contract that the second year if he is named starter they can afford him a restructured salary to add a signing bonus or incentives or whatever...

understood..

the numbers you describe seem realistic enough to me.. i'm still confident fitzpatrick gets re-signed with a deal that's fair for both sides..

we'll see soon enough..

Just our typical luck. We finally have a decent quarterback and he's going to price himself out of our affordability.

i don't know E.. after bradford ridiculous contract wasn't it pretty much a given fitzpatrick would test free agency??

let's hope this is more gamesmanship (from both sides) than anything else..

The Jets and pending free agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick are "far apart" in contract negotiations, reports Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network (Mar. 7).

Rapoport notes the 33-year-old Fitzpatrick is expected to hit the open market.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles and GM Mike Maccagnan have said this offseason that the team hopes to retain Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick, who was acquired by the Jets from the Texans last March, threw for 3,905 yards with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions last season.

I can't panic on this yet because Fitzpatrick is more valuable to the New York Jets. Yes, Rapoport's report is informative, but I almost see it as a move to rile up panic in the fans to press back on the Jets. Fitzpatrick will benefit most from playing in a Chan Gailey offense he is familiar in and with two receivers who are adept in the short possession style game that goes with Fitzpatrick's inability to work deep.

Who is going to pay Fitzpatrick $15 million a year? The Broncos? They are working on their deal with Osweiler -- who is far younger -- for the same money. The Texans? They just unloaded Fitz to the Jets last year, so bringing him back wouldn't make sense. The Browns? I doubt Hue Jackson would be thrilled with a quarterback who can't work deep to Josh Gordon. The Niners? Maybe. Chip Kelly likes quarterbacks who can run and work an up-tempo short passing game, but they'd have to sort out the Colin Kaepernick issue first.

The sides are far apart because Fitzpatrick's side hasn't seen what the market will bear for him yet. Once those conversations start to happen for Fitz later today, the Jets (and maybe more importantly) Fitzpatrick will know what he's worth. Then, both sides can truly hammer out a fair deal that makes the most sense for everyone.

I was hoping for a 10-12 million dollar contract. I kind of wish we signed him earlier last year. I know hindsight is 20-20

Where is he going to sign with a better situation?? He had a great year because he was with the Jets. He is still just an average QB and always will be. He is our key to being competitive next year, but not our future. I think he is just testing to set his market which IMO is as a backup. He might start for Broncos if Osweiller leaves. That is only better situation I think. LA, SF, Houston again and Browns are only teams looking for a starter and those teams are all awful. He will sign with Jets or be a backup.

Emphasis on the word "decent".

Yes, he's the best we have right now, but if he's not the "missing piece" (which I don't personally think he is), then I'd rather not overspend for him.

Yes it means more wandering in the wilderness, but what Jets fan isn't used to that by now?

Fitz was the first qb in forever that I didnt cringe every time we dropped back to pass. Fitz is a perfect fit for this offense. I do get that he's not the long term answer but he definitely is one less piece that we would need heading into this offseason.

completely agree with the bolded.. BTW, if the light really did turn on for him last season, i can see fitzpatrick playing at that level until 36 or so..
