We MUST take a QB

Look I want the jets to win that elusive SB so bad and it makes my heart ache every time I am forced to think about years like 86, 99, 04, 09, 10.

But I do know there were things in common about those teams. They ALL had QB issues and it ultimately caused our demise. 1986 saw Kenny O'Brien go down for a long period of time during the season and the rest of the team fell victim to one of most horrid injury bugs I have ever seen. By the time Kenny O came back it was too late for them they fell short in the divisional round.

In 1999, not much to tell really. Vinny ruptured his Achilles and our SB hopes went right out the window at that instant.

In 2004, we had a QB that had arm troubles and it showed as we had the Steelers beat. But the offense only scored 3 points against that defense and ultimately that cost us that game. Everyone wants to look at Doug Brien as the reason, but the fact still remains if the offense had done its job we would have won.

In 2009 and 2010, we had a young QB we hoped would grow into a great QB but no dice. The guy was terrible and ultimately he cost in both of those AFC Championship games.

The point I am making is right now the Jets are in a very important place in their development. It's a very pivotal point. They could easily decide to go with what they already have at QB, and maybe even make the playoffs a few times, but in the end this team would fail just like all the teams in the past because they did not have anything at the most important spot on the field.

Or they could ATTEMPT to get better. This is the way I prefer. That is for the Jets to take that highly touted QB and try to develop him into something special. There's a good chance that Mariota could be there at number 6, and if he is? I do not believe the Jets should hesitate. Take him and do not look back.

Either way this is about the Jets getting better and that does not happen by the Jets sitting idly bye while other teams grab the top QB candidates and try to develop them. This is a very risky thing, but it is a NECESSARY risky move.

In a QB driven league, taking a QB is the only way we'll get that team that has the goods to go all the way.

So my vote goes for QB in the 1st round. Marcus Mariota all the way if he is there when we pick. What do you say?

The only thing in your post I disagree with is "This is a very risky thing," I don't think it's all that risky. There is certainly no guarantee that Mariota will develop into an elite QB, but he is certainly better then what the Jets have out there now.

IMO it's a no brainer if he is there at 6 the Jets should take him. The only question is, should they move up and get him?

If its not a QB the CS thinks they can develop no need just for a QB...the champions have good to great Ds and QBs that make winning plays...Chan will hopefully get Fitz and Geno to limit TOs and the D will force more, something the Jets never seem to do at a good rate

I definitely agree that a team without a stable and quality quarterback is going to struggle to find success. I am not the biggest fan of Mariota at 6 , but if the Jets feel like he is their guy then they need to pick him. With the rookie salary cap the way that it is, it doesn't cost 20 - 30 mil guaranteed to draft a top 10 quarterback anymore.

I would say outright NO!!! I am not sure in today's environment that a QB could develop in the greater NY area, the fan madness, the unrelenting media, the overall pressure to be a star right from day one might be too much to ask from a 22-24 year old..... trading for or signing a QB a Veteran star may be what we are destined toward.

A lot to ask from an introverted guy who never commanded a huddle.

When has a good QB been traded or left for free agency in recent years? Only one I can think of is Brees and Kurt Warner.

We need to draft, unfortunately.

Even if the CS and FO feel that Mariota can be a future franchise QB and draft the young man, there is no way he should play for at least the first year. That plan can work only if Gailey can get the best out of Geno or Fitz. Otherwise, the fan and media pressure will be too great to make a change and if this kid is forced onto the field too early he will fail. Mariota must sit if drafted.

If Mariota was a slam dunk, I'd say absolutely. But he's not a slam dunk. He's a guy who's gonna need some work on a few things before/if he can become an elite QB. I'm not sold on Mariota. I wouldn't throw a hissy fit if we took him, but I'd be ok with taking one of the second tier guys, assuming our scouts have done their homework on them.

I'm still leaning towards a pass rusher at #6 .

I agree. Marcus Mariota is too shy for the limelight of NYC. He'll only succeed if we develop here and put him in the best possible situation. Does this franchise have the patience? Do we?

Agreed, but it should be the right guy.

Just looking at the Idzik model, had he waited a year to address QB, he could've possibly had a choice of all those prospects - Bortles, Bridgewater, Carr, Garoppolo...I'm not going to mention Manziel. Oops, I did. That was the year to get a QB. Some viable options were available. Instead, Idzik forced his hand and rushed the job with only Geno, EJ Manuel, Glennon and Barkley being the choices.

You gotta be smart about this and realize it's a long-term strategy for success. If you don't think your guy is there (in Mariota), move on. More options will appear and this is a better strategy than desperately taking the wrong guy "now". And Woody needs to do his part in cultivating this environment if he's ever going to have a long-term sustained winning team. He's been part of the problem.

if mariota is there, and the caoches like him, sure, go ahead and take him.

but it's looking more and more likely he won't be there at 6.

so i ask the OP, what do you do?

That is a big underrated dilemma of the young QB in NY you are either "Broadway" or "Gutter" there is no in between ..and I love being 10 minutes from Manhattan but it is a TOUGH place. always reminds me of Eddie Whitson of Yanks in 80's...was lights out in San Diego, but came here as a free agent and LITERALLY was too nervous to perform and that was before social media and computers !! ..with a lot of distractions...I think you really need to gauge a kid's mental perspective before you bring him here...the media is A LOT of the problem..they can be your best friend or your worst nightmare.......its much easier to be a QB in Green Bay, Kansas City, San Diego even Boston than NEW York Philly or Chicago... the aforementioned towsn are always "glass half full " towns

All those towns at least have a media that love their team. I must say that the NY Jets beat writers hope for us to fail so they have a better story to write about.

If you read stories from other towns, they are all fluff pumping up the home team. Here, we have Manish, posting BS "anonymous sources" that derail and distract the team
