We MUST take a QB

I'am all for drafting Mariota. Though if he doesn't get drafted by us at 6, then it should precluded us from drafting one in the later round if management thinks they have something to offer in this years QB competition.

I for one think Bryce Petty would be a perfect fit for Gailey's system. He has "Jim Kelly" leadership skills in which he can rally his team through a brick wall. A lazer arm and has a brain to work with as he is an excellent student of the game.

IMHO, as crazy as this might sound, i hope the Jets trade back into the late 1st round and pick Petty. This kid's stock will rise very fast by next month. My gut feeling is he will be exceptional in this league.

If Mariota was a slam dunk, I'd say absolutely. But he's not a slam dunk. He's a guy who's gonna need some work on a few things before/if he can become an elite QB. I'm not sold on Mariota. I wouldn't throw a hissy fit if we took him, but I'd be ok with taking one of the second tier guys, assuming our scouts have done their homework on them.

I'm still leaning towards a pass rusher at #6 .

I agree with everything you said. If we take that second tier guy, I want it to be Bryce Petty.

I don't think it is crazy, but I believe he will be there at #37 and we can take him then. He might have the right make-up to handle the NY fanbase and media, and we have #6 who can step in and contribute right away. I don't think any drafted QB for us will play in the first year or two.

What is amazing here is that none of us are questioning his football skills or talent , moreso we are all laser focused on what kills all QB's in NY... the stage, the limelight and the press.

None of us has seen a QB here with football skills and talent since Vinny tore his Achilles in game 1 of 99, Chad's first season of 2002 or Favre's first half of his only season

Maybe Fitz can hold the fort for awhile and rid the team of its QB stench of the last 4 seasons until we finally luck into a real franchise QB with football skills and talent '

Why don't they make 'em like Joe Willy any more?

Agreed, but it should be the right guy.

Just looking at the Idzik model, had he waited a year to address QB, he could've possibly had a choice of all those prospects - Bortles, Bridgewater, Carr, Garoppolo...I'm not going to mention Manziel. Oops, I did. That was the year to get a QB. Some viable options were available. Instead, Idzik forced his hand and rushed the job with only Geno, EJ Manuel, Glennon and Barkley being the choices.

You gotta be smart about this and realize it's a long-term strategy for success. If you don't think your guy is there (in Mariota), move on. More options will appear and this is a better strategy than desperately taking the wrong guy "now". And Woody needs to do his part in cultivating this environment if he's ever going to have a long-term sustained winning team. He's been part of the problem.

Do qe have any reason to think Mariota is a higher thought of prospect than geno was?

I have yet to see a case made either here or in the media convincing me that he's a sure thing. Most posters here just use the reasoning that either Geno sucks or that we need a franchise QB. That's all well and good but no one explains why it should be Mariota. What part of his game is so exceptional that the Jets should invest a high 1st and wait for him to develop? How do we KNOW he's the guy? What indicates this?

I'm far from convinced.

Only if you have eyes that work

Explanation? What should we be seeing with our eyes that tells us he's the one. You make it sound like it should be very easy to see.

All those towns at least have a media that love their team. I must say that the NY Jets beat writers hope for us to fail so they have a better story to write about.

If you read stories from other towns, they are all fluff pumping up the home team. Here, we have Manish, posting BS "anonymous sources" that derail and distract the team

Mariota and probably Petty, Grayson, Hundley, Mannion and Carden are ALL better than Idzik's second round mistake currently dragging down the Jet offense

I believe that if you draft a qb first round, he must be"the"guy you want. You don't reach or gamble. Your first and usually 2nd must be ready or damn near ready to field their position on day 1, not sit for a year and learn how to throw a ball.
If there's a guy you, as a coach, feel is your guy in the 1st, do everything possible to draft him and you are forever linked.
Any good front office won't tell you their real opinion of a potential pick. I see defense in the 1st (unless cooper is available), and maybe petty at 2nd pick, definately pretty if he's at 3rd round pick. Let him sit a year if he truly is your guy and not a first round type player.
I don't think this is the year to pick a first round qb.

I like petty and I would draft him late first round or later in a heartbeat. You do have to worry that some of his throws would be picked in a pro defense, and he does stare down a lot,and go with first option every throw. But I like that he's quick with the release, gambles a little, and can lead a receiver with the throw, something Eli still can't do.

You know, you really don't know if a guy is quiet because he's smart and doesn't want to derail his nfl ambition. Someone quiet might surprise you and step up in the limelight, usually that type of guy has good morals and can lead. You just never know, part of why interview process is key, something we have no info on.

I tend to agree, but I think I might be a little more confident in him than you seem to be. What worries me is that he's a system QB who thrived under Oregon's spread offense. He needs some work. That's certain. Do you invest that high of a pick for the potential to have a franchise QB?

Depends on your point of view. I'm torn on this one. I'm glad my job isn't riding on that decision.

Whether the Jets get a quiet man of high moral caliber, or a party animal like Namath, I don't particularly care. Just find us someone, anyone, who will help bring us the Lombardi.
