Scouting the Opponent: Arizona Cardinals

fitzgerald-art.jpg

The Buzz: The Cardinals enter Week 6 with a 2-3 record, coming off of a 33-21 win over the 49ers on Thursday Night Football. Two-time NFL Coach of the Year Bruce Arians is the leader in Arizona, compiling a 36-17 record in his three-plus years as head coach of the Cards. Arizona had its best season under Arians in 2015, winning the NFC West with a 13-3 record. The Cards eventually lost in the NFC Championship to the Carolina Panthers. This game marks Jets head coach Todd Bowles’ return to Glendale, where he was the defensive coordinator for two seasons (2013-2014).

The Offense

The Staples: The offense is led by the ageless QB Carson Palmer. The 36-year old has revived his career since joining the Cardinals in 2013, throwing for over 4,000 yards in two full seasons (he was limited to six games in 2014). Last year, Palmer posted his best stats, recording a career-high in passing yards (4,671) and touchdowns (35) while throwing a career-low 11 interceptions. In four games this season, the former first overall pick has thrown for 1,150 yards, six touchdowns and five picks. Palmer did not play last week because of a concussion.

Palmer’s go-to receiver is Larry Fitzgerald, who has been with the organization since 2004 and is as consistent as they come in the NFL. In his 13-year career, he has only missed six games and has posted 1,000-yard seasons seven times. This year, he’s amassed 361 yards and five touchdowns.

Rising Star: Second-year RB David Johnson is quickly becoming one of the league’s best and most versatile backs. Johnson came on strong at the end of last year as a result of an injury-plagued backfield, but he’s the feature back in 2016. He’s fourth in the league in rushing yards and is coming off a 157-yard rushing performance against the Niners. Johnson is also a weapon in the passing game as he totaled four receiving touchdowns last season and brought in 36 receptions for 457 yards. This season, he has 238 receiving yards and is averaging 14 yards per catch.

[TWEET]784494742826393600[/TWEET]

The Defense

The Anchors: The Cardinals’ secondary continues to flourish, ranking No. 4 in the league while only allowing an average of 190 yards per game. Five-time Pro Bowl CB Patrick Peterson is the featured player of that group. Known for his combination of speed and cover skills, Peterson has become one of the premier corners in the league. He has two interceptions this season, tying his total from 2015. The LSU product’s interception total hasn’t been high the past couple of years because teams typically throw elsewhere on the field.

Behind him is former LSU teammate S Tyrann Mathieu. Mathieu, better known as the Honey Badger, is recognized for his aggressive style of play. Before getting injured in Week 15 last season, he racked up 89 tackles, 17 PDs, 1 FF and 5 TDs including a 33-yard touchdown return.

Immediate Impact: The Cardinals acquired DE Chandler Jones from the Patriots in the offseason and he’s been a factor early. Through five games he’s racked up 4.0 sacks, 8 QB hits, 6.0 TFL, 1 PD, 1 FF and two FR. Last season in New England, he racked up a career-high 12.5 sacks and four FF.

Yet another L for our beloved J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets! Jets lose again, 27-14 and F-ints-Patrick throws another 3 ints atleast against that excellent secondary. Johnson probably has a field day on the front 7 (I doubt that) but I don't doubt at all that Fitzgerald and the other two key receivers lights this secondary up.

I have Palmer, Johnson and Brown on my FF team and I am usually torn when I have this many player vs the Jets, but I would rather win my FF league.

When I saw this game on the schedule earlier this year, I thought it was one of the worst games we had to play. I'm still not thrilled having to go to AZ against Palmer and Fitzgerald, and a solid secondary. But the Cardinals aren't as scary this season as they were last season. They're definitely beatable. But until I see the Jets play more like last season, as opposed to the first 5 games this year, I'm not feeling good about our chances. It's still a tough opponent on the road, so I'm expecting another loss.

Lou, hope you have a great time out there. Hopefully we can pull one out, and salvage the season. It would be a HUGE win.

Yea I was worried about this game prior to the season but I see something in the Cards that reminds me of the Jets.... Carson Palmer.... He is a slightly betterversion of Fitz and only because he has a stronger arm, Fitz actaully scrambles better than him... He has had a long career but he really has had only 3 years where he was dominant. 2006, 2007 and last year.. Other than he has been very similar to Fitz ... He turns the ball over a lot. He makes bad decisions all the time.

The advantage they have is David Johnson.... I think we neutralize him in the run game but he looks like he'll murder us in the pass game.... If we can contain that. We might have a shot at winning this game. Yes I know they have Fitzgerald, Brown an Floyd.. We need Revis to blanket Fitzgerald.. Floyd is big but I think we have guys that can cover him... Brown is the one that scares me.. He's shifty and he can burn.. Secondary needs to be good and the DL must hit Palmer all game

Offensively we have to have Marshall have a strong game against Patrick Peterson... But we need Enunwa, Anderson and ASJ to dominate their matchups...

And maybe just maybe it'll be an enjoyable experience for me at the game

The Jets’ Three Coordinators Address the Media

The Jets’ Three Coordinators Address the Media

The Jets defense has dealt with its ups and downs thus far in 2016, sacking Bengals QB Andy Dalton seven times in the season opener and allowing a league high eight receptions of 40-plus yards. Defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers said the defense as making “great strides,” as his unit only allowed two 20-plus yard receptions last week against Pittsburgh, but there are still things that need to be tightened up.

“Slight things. What happened is we tried to take away the deep ball and they started hitting us with some underneath,” Rodgers said. “It was more yards after the catch with three or four yard passes. That hinders your pass rush and everything trickled down from there.”

[fbv]1779749695639085[/fbv]

With the news of WR Eric Decker heading to the IR, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey recognizes the challenges ahead, saying it will take a “group effort” to fill his void. The group Gailey is referring to includes a trio of rookie receivers — Robby Anderson, Charone Peake and Jalin Marshall, who fully participated in practice for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury against the Chiefs.

“What you have to do is you have to put them out there and play them. I think you have you to put them in a position to try to be successful and then evaluate from there and take the next step,” he said. “It’s a step-by-step process. It isn’t he can do this, I know he’s good at this, let’s just go do this all the time. Because they have to multiple type players, they just can’t be one dimensional. So it’s going to be a step-by-step developmental process with each one of them. Find out what they do well and get them in the right spots.”

[fbv]1779749512305770[/fbv]

Special teams coordinator Brant Boyer said his unit has made one or two mistakes a game that have hurt the team. His group needs to be on its A-game this week as the Cardinals’ have one of the most impressive special teams corps in the league.

“They’re really good. They got some great returners who are very, very fast. As a matter of fact, some of the fastest that have come into the league the past couple of years,” Boyer said. “They’ve got one of the best, if not the best, all-around special teams player in [Justin] Bethel in my opinion. Calais Campbell with field goal blocks, Patrick Peterson. I mean you can go down the line and name a bunch of people that they have, they’re a really good unit. It’s going to be a big challenge for us.”
