Will David Harris return to the Jets?

Jason Cole of the Bleacher Report mentions that Jets LB David Harris will be the top inside linebacker on the open market this year “without question.”

Sources tell Cole that Harris is not 100 percent committed to being back with the Jets next year, and his preference would be to play for a contender. However, Cole did say that Harris would like to finish out his career as a member of the Jets.

Cole believes Harris would be willing to take less in terms of salary for an opportunity to make the playoffs and contend for a Super Bowl championship.

There has been some speculation that Rex Ryan would like to lure Harris to Buffalo next year, but it sounds like he may look for a more proven team to sign with.

Harris, 31, finished out his four-year contract worth $36 million, which included $29.5 million guaranteed.

In 2014, Harris recorded 124 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has Harris rated as the No. 29 inside linebacker out of 60 qualifying players.

Money will play a role. We will see if the Bills have interest.

The one thing that Rex has going for him is a lot of the bills players were in Pettines system aka Rex's system just one season ago. He probably won't have a strong need to bring in a lot of former players to help with the learning curve.

I think Harris gets a lot of heat from Jets fans for no reason. He isn't an all star but he is very consistent and reliable. At his age a short deal at a much cheaper price then his generous previous contract should get it done.

To be fair Harris was very under payed early in his career and was a good egg about waiting for his turn will revis, mangold and brick got deals. He was rewarded for that and his good play. At the time he had the stats consistent with the top backers in the league. Probably still does when you consider sacks and ints. and not just tackles.

No thanks get a younger player let him find a spot on a contender

And then thats one more player we need to replace. I don't get the hate on him. He isn't a bad player. We have bigger concerns then ILB.

What type of contract is he going to want? You and I both know if a contender and the Jets offer the same money he is gone...he has maybe two more good years why pay for past performance....we as fans glorify players too much time to start looking not at past but what his forecast looks in the 2016 season....it's better to get rid one year early than one too late

But you are talking about getting rid of a guy for no reason. Who is going to replace him. I don't think he will be greedy and demand a big deal. He isn't that kind of guy.

If we had someone waiting to take his spot that he is holding back then OK. We have a lot of holes to fill on this team no need to add one more when we have a serviceable guy here already.

He is a free agent...I'm saying not to re-sign him unless it is friendly, very friendly...if he is trying to get top 15 money at this stage let him go...if you think he will be the man in 2016 then go for it...I do not think he is that guy, he isn't fast, he can't tackle sideline to sideline...his time here was great but no need for nostalgia signings

I agree. Harris was way over paid on his last contract, but hey, I don't hate him for that.

He's 31 and still playing at a high level, not a star but a good player. If they can reach a fair contract, with no money guaranteed after two years, bring him back

I appreciate the hitman for all that he's done for this team but unless he's willing to come back on a highly reduced salary and role, I would prefer to move on from him. I've been saying this on twitter for awhile but Harris would have been the perfect 80's linebacker. Unfortunately, Harris is not what a LB needs to be in today's NFL. He needs to be able to cover receivers which is something Harris struggles mightily doing. If he wants to come back and be a mentor for Demario Davis or a linebacker we draft, I'm all for it, but we need speed at the position and unfortunately Harris just isn't the answer going forward.

Agreed. The perfect sum up. He is a good character/locker room guy. Worth keeping around for a fair deal. He doesn't have to be cheap just fair.

I don't think he will return. Just my opinion. Great player though. I just dont see the Jets renewing his contract. Would be bad ass to see him end his career as a Jet.

Not hating on Hitman but there comes a time when the production starts to decline and even though the newer model may not produce at the same level it's best to start that learning curve while everyone is building than to have that exposed as a glaring weakness when the rest of the team is hitting their stride

I feel the Jets should let Harris walk, we know what we have in him, a solid player. But it is time for some young guys to come in and generate turnovers and become more than just solid. We need some all-pros. Harris is past his prime.

The question is who replaces him? Right now we have no one.

Bingo

If the Jets had a young guy standing in the wings waiting to jump in and do just as good a job, yeah let Harris go. There is no one.

If Harris wants to stay another 2 years for a fair contract, Jets would be crazy to let him go. Guys 31 not 41, he's got a few years left. If another inside LB'er appears in the next 2 years, then Bye bye. Right now it would weaken the team to let him go with no replacement

He started 9 games as a rookie and played 11 the next year because he was hurt other then that he played 16 every year..
