Why can't he do both? They wasted a year, that's valuable time. His footwork is not good. He's a statue back there, doesn't move around the pocket. He's stiff and he's even worse when under pressure. They should have fixed his mechanics while he picked up the game as the season progressed. When you draft someone in the second round you expect them to be somewhat competent that they can pick up the game fairly quickly.
Hack's best attribute is his arm.
you are kidding me right? third string behind Fizzlesticks and Petty not to mention Geno for those couple weeks, when were they going to spend time with him during the season... so the best thing they did was work with him in the class room... from his freshman year til him being drafted his overall from footwork, recognition skill set and pocket mobility was seriously hampered by the wonderful play of his offensive line oh meant live dummies, no one should or would of survived that beating on a game to game basis and come out still 100% capable as he was in his freshman year...
this kid is intelligent, getting his awareness through film study so when they work with him this off season he won't freak out... He will recognize defensive sets and not feel threatened that he is going take a bigger beaten then he did in college... remember these players are the cream of the crop from college, while he played against some the majority are not in the NFL now...
as quarterback, having the foundation and the moxy to keep getting back up and willing to fight through the worst to develop into the best is what they saw in this kid... every hit, he got back up and went to war with his team mates got pounded some more and just kept getting back up.... Never threw his team mates under the bus in post game pressers, always took the high road and saying he needs to get better...
like you said his arm is his ticket, being intelligent having football IQ and understand the game watching film makes him smarter... during this upcoming off season settling down under center or in shotgun being able to recognize blitz packages set his protection and make audible adjustments to counter defenses will be the least of his worry because that is what he did last year learning in film study... he probably picked the brain of Fitz who albeit sucks as a starter is intelligent himself...
a quarterback that is confident in his recognition skills, trusts his team mates and we surround him with enough weapons he can be a dangerous player if given the right chance to prove it...
we just have to wait n see, worst thing he doesn't pan out -- and we move on and draft another until we find the right one... but have a feeling he is the guy they are banking on to be that guy...
