No one can debate that Sam has had terrible coaching, that he has had a putrid offensive line, and that he has had below average players at the skill/speed positions. Yes, I know that Robbie is tearing it up this year.
I was ecstatic when Sam was drafted. However, I have come to believe that Sam has to share in the blame. Yes, he has shown flashes of brilliance, but it appears to me that:
1. He locks onto his primary receiver. Has anyone ever seen him look off a defensive back?
2. If his primary is not open, , as has often been the case, he is slow to find his second option, let alone the third one.
3. In general, I do not think that h sees the field well at all or reads defenses well.
4. He makes at least 1 bone-headed decision every game.
5. Even allowing for the bad offensive line, I just don’t think that Sam has good pocket presence on the few occasions that he does have time.
I still feel the main problem is that he rarely has time to scan the field and to step into his throws. A better offensive line would alleviate the problems, but I no longer think that the problems would be eliminated. I think that Sami’s a great kid, but I now doubt that he will be a star, at least not with the Jets. I would love to be proven wrong. Maybe the Steelers, Colts, etc. will trade for Sam and get a bargain, and we will all lament what could have been.
