The Jets won their preseason opener, 24-21, with a go-ahead score in the final seconds on Friday night vs. the Eagles in Philadelphia, but the outcome and most of the game was overshadowed by the knee injury sustained by Jets Quarterback in the first quarter. Zach Wilson will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and is expected to miss two to four weeks, sources confirmed.

Jets-Eagles The Injury

The Jets started Chuma Edoga at Left Tackle and Rookie Max Mitchell, a 4rth-round pick from Louisiana, at Right Tackle With 4:29 left in the first quarter, Wilson took a shotgun snap and faced immediate pressure from Defensive End Tarron Jackson after the Eagles defender cleanly beat Mitchell off the line of scrimmage.

After neatly stepping aside the oncoming Johnson, Wilson saw open grass up the home sideline. Instead of electing to go out of bounds, Wilson looked for more, but his right leg gave way while making a move to his left. The athletic Jets QB knew something wasn’t right and gave himself up with a dive to the ground.

Jets QB Injury Update

Wilson, suffered a non-contact injury during Friday’s preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, was diagnosed with a bone bruise and a meniscus tear, a source said, adding that the meniscus doesn’t need a full repair, only a “trim.” No timetable for procedure as it is pending to second opinion for the Jets QB.

Tough start for the 2022 Jets. Drafted in 2021, Wilson limped to the locker room after hitting the turf from a non contact injury. The Jets QB left the field and was taken immediately to the locker room. Prior to the game he was not available for media post game. This is his second injury to that right knee in ten month span. Last season the Wilson suffered a sprained PCL which he was sidelined for four weeks. Jets have two serviceable back up options in fan favorite Mike White and wiley ole veteran Joe Flacco. While this injury could of been much worse it is a set back on for Wilson and this young team moving forward.

“You guys know how I feel about Joe — everyone does, the whole world does,” Saleh said Friday night. “Joe’s a phenomenal football player. He’s having a great camp, and he’s got a lot of juice left in the tank.”

Other QB options:

New York Jets re-signed Flacco in the offseason because they wanted a steadying presence in the quarterback room. Head Coach Robert Saleh recently said Joe Flacco is still good enough to be a starter in the league. Flacco. Flacco started for the Ravens from 2008 to 2018 and led them to a Super Bowl championship in the 2012 season, hasn’t won a start since Week 6 of the 2019 season. At the time, he was starting for the Denver Broncos. Flacco since then has lost seven straight starts, including five for the Jets over two stints in 2020 and 2021.

Mike White is a fan favorite because he passed for 405 yards and three touchdowns last season in his first career start, leading to an upset over the Cincinnati Bengals. White also threw four interceptions two weeks later against the Bills and was benched in favor of Flacco, who started the next game (a loss to the Miami Dolphins). Wilson returned the following week.

It is highly unlikely that journeyman Chris Streveler is likely to compete for a Jets 53-man roster with both Joe Flacco and Mike White ultimately likely to be the duo competing for the open day roster starter. Streveler could be competing for practice squad roster spot with the injury to franchise quarterback Zach Wilson looked to be sidelined up to four weeks. Streveler played college football at Minnesota and South Dakota. Streveler previously played two seasons for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I liked what I saw from Streveler more than White last night. I like his mobility and his moxy. Mike White’s stats seem to benefit from a lot of dump off throws. Wouldn’t be shocked to see him beat out White for the #3 QB spot.

Regarding Wilson’s injury, it really is amazing how many beat writers and fans automatically jumped to the worst case scenario last night. It was all doom and gloom. Some were declaring a torn ACL without even knowing.

Tales of Wilson “badly limping off the field” were gross exaggerations. I honestly believe Cimini and Hughes loves stoking the “woe is us” SOJ mentality. They actually like it.

I'm with you. The smart thing to do would be to give the guy some game time with the higher echelons against Atlanta, just to do due diligence. Perhaps he can operate LaFleur's offense better than the other guys. AND he can run without getting non-contact injuries.

Let’s all hope he’s plays from game one (as long as he’s good to go) and gives us the best season he can. Even if game one they protect him as much as they can it’s ok! Example: if the offense has 50 snaps of offense against the Ravens and they run the ball 35 times, I’m good with it. Same with the next game if it’s needed. Hopefully that next week he’ll feel more comfortable and they can get him more involved and so on.

As I stated yesterday, and might be worth re-stating, a huge part of Zach's game is his ad lib scrambling which can be a detriment to that style of play. (See RG III and others).

The problem with Jets fans is that they all are fascinated with the big play . Drunk with Namath booms and think that’s how you win football games .
In the NFL you win games by taking what’s given and minimizing mistakes. You do that in all three phases and you win more than you will lose .
When Mike White did that he looked like Joe Montana and when he got bold and tried to impress the fans and the coaching staff because Flacco was about to be handed the starting job, he looked like Geno Smith .
Another thing is this . In the last 5 years, maybe 10, can anyone name me the game where a Jet QB threw the ball for over 350 yards and we actually won the game . In that game, Mike White threw 3 INTs . IIRC 2 of those INTs were off the hands of our receivers .

pffft...Thank you for bringing that up, causing me to do research, and reminding me how badly this team sucked.

As Zach's surgery is scheduled for Tuesday in L.A., we won't know much until they are inside as per coach Robert Saleh. All we can do is hope, wait, and have many "what ifs" roaming in our heads.

-Will Zach return and then add more weeks to rid his "ring rust"?
-Will he play the same reckless way, or remain more in the pocket?
-Who will replace him now moving forward?
-Do we spend money on a Jimmy G., or use what's in our barn?
Every year, man.....you just can't make this chit up!!

If it's bad news, stick with Flacco. Win maybe 4-6 games. we're not going to the playoffs this year. Look to draft a top Linebacker or Offensive tackle.

I feel like 37 year old Flacco is the new Vinny T. Foley got hurt so 35 year old Vinny T could be the savior. If he is on a roll then Zach should sit. Unless we find out Flacco is bangin' grandmas I think he will provide the leadership this offense needs and will rally around. Playoffs baby!!
