Jets defensive end Leonard Williams is sublimely talented. That was never much of a question.
So far, his thirst for knowledge of the NFL game matches his natural talent. That's what has stood out to coach Todd Bowles through offseason activities so far.
"Sometimes you'll get rookies that just run around and don't know where to go; this guy is always where he needs to be," Bowles said, per NJ.com. "He's always on time. He's always in his playbook. He's asking more questions than the normal rookies usually ask at this point in time. So from that standpoint, I just say he has age beyond his years."
It's somewhat hard to believe, but Williams is only 20 years old. He doesn't turn 21 until June 20. That's part of the reason his ceiling is so exceptionally high.
New York drafted the USC product fifth overall not because of need but because he was the top-rated player on their board. A number of analysts considered Williams the best overall player in this class, so it was a surprise he even fell to No. 5.
The two-time first-team All-American finished with 21 sacks, 36.5 tackles for a loss, five forced fumbles, two interceptions and 218 tackles over three seasons with the Trojans. Even if there's no obvious spot for him on a defensive line that features Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson, he undoubtedly makes this defense — and this team — better.
"Right now, most of the things are mental," Bowles said. "He's in pretty good shape, which I like. He's more mature than the average rookie. He's grasping the system quickly and he's moving around well out of pads, but to really judge him, you have to see him in pads for the linemen."
In other words: so far, so good.
