Geno Smith?

With out a doubt, the best case scenario moving forward is for Smith to come in this year and play like it really is his team. Pretty sure Smith will be the opening day starter unless he falls threw his butt this summer. Doubt he will. The last two years he has played reasonably well in the preseason, when no one is hitting him, and the throws don't mean anything.

It's when the pass rush is coming, and games are on the line that he goes all Geno, and starts running in the wrong direction, and throwing the ball to the wrong color jersey.

Hope he can do it, because it is in the best intrest of the team, but I'm not sure you can coach panic out. He'll play a bit better this year with actually a talented offense, and a new OC, but unfortunately I suspect he'll revert back to his natural instincts when the bullets start flying.

I just hope Bowles is keeping his finger on the trap door button. Figure Smith gets the first four starts, and we'll see Fitz after the bye.

I doubt smith is going to go 0-4 first 4. Way I look at it is if he's still playing like "Geno" they will be 2-2. Even if he plays badly I think there is enough talent on the team to win two games.

Bowles will have to examine what Smith has contributed to the wins, and losses. If the negatives out weigh the positives, he'll get yanked, and the season will still be salvageable. If he appears to have turned the page, he gets a few more games.

Would rather see a legitimate QB competition in camp, but I understand why they are going to be giving Smith so much rope. He has some physical talent, and they want to make total sure he is a bust before they toss him under the bus.

Like I said if he sucks in camp, he'll be gone, but basing it on previous years don't think he'll be Geno until the pressure is on.

Who knows, maybe he'll play under fire this year

Well, coaching had something to do with it. And his crappy supporting cast and his crappy OL. Not saying he will be good, but he has one more year to prove it with improved parts and coaches.

i doubt very seriously bowles will give smith a year to prove he can play..

if smith is named the week 1 starter, i'd be shocked if he got past halftime of week 4 with poor play to that point in the season..

Jets come out on opening day and beat the Browns handily. Smith looks OK because the Jets dominate. People are running victory laps for Smith.

Next 3 games, Colts, Birds, Fish Smith reverts back to his erratic play against decent teams, looking good one series, and giving the game away the next. Jets strong D and running game manage to pull out one more win.

Jets are 2-2 at he bye, trap door opens, and Smith's career is over. Out comes Fitz to lead the Jets to a 10-6 season.

I don't know if I would consider one side of the argument as Geno defenders or apologists. Speaking for myself, I'd like to think that I'm being reasonable considering all of the mitigating factors of his poor or at best inconsistent performance to date.
Undeniable (in my mind) factors: 1) he didn't come from a college system that is anything like a pro system; 2) because of #1 , he should have sat for at least a year; 3) poor to abysmal surrounding talent, at least in his rookie season; 4) unstructured development (no offensive plan - coaching); and 5) coaching.
I don't have a clue as to whether he is the answer for this team. I think he does deserve a chance with an OC who is known for doing well with lesser talents than Geno, and much better surrounding talent. One thing I'm sure of in this argument is that no one on this forum knows how this will turn out.

I think at this point, everyone is hoping for the best, but bracing for the worst when it comes to Geno. He has some things in his favor but ultimately, the odds are against him becoming a franchise QB, because the odds are against ANYONE becoming a franchise QB. Most guys just don't turn into franchise QBs.

Just don't see it happening. Smith's problem, IMO at least, isn't natural talent, mechanics, or at this point even his lack of experience. it's a tendency to panic, and do dumb things. Then sulk. Maybe his relationship with Marshall can straighten him out.

My jab wasn't directed at you. You are a reasonable, unbiased and objective poster regarding everything about the Jets. Fortunately you are amongst the majority here and my comment was in no way about you or any of the other fair posters here
