Fitzpatrick Thread -- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jets agree to 1-year, $12M deal

Here's a list of qb money in 2016.
Fitz making 12 and being happy, basically means he's fine being the lowest paid starter in the nfl,not on a mandatory rookie contract.
Basically luck makes 25 mill, followed by 10 guys between 20-22
Then everyone else is mid to high teens. Andy Dalton would be one up from Fitz and rg3 would be the next qb after Fitz, at 7.5 mill. Followed by rookie deals and backups.

So the Jets are basically paying him like Dalton this year and then like Matt moore for 2 years. That is not in line with his talent.

Fitz felt like the Jets were his home and he was the leader, and the Jets have basically said we don't want you, but have no other option this year, with this offer.

Fitz likes 12, which we also offered, we need a3 year deal to spread out his pay as a bonus. Fitz countered with a1 year 12 mill deal, but we said no because of managing the cap number this year. Fitz is comfortable with a prove it deal, which would mean he will make 18 next year after putting 2 years together.

I think a3 year 36 mill is the magic number, just as I have always said here. I would guarantee 18 over the first 2 years. Even if hack starts next year, he's on rookie money, so we'd have less than 15 mill at the entire qb position.

I think Fitz can play at last year's level for 2-3 years as the kids grow up.

The fans will turn on a dime if he doesn't watch it. If he signs now for better money and then comes in and stinks up the joint, the fans will be picketing in front of his house...

Leave it to the Jets to be in this situation with a career average QB who had a career year and yet the entire league doesn't want him. Stick to your guns front office and give him a deadline. If not signed by the second week of TC, go with Geno and if we suck it just improves our draft spot and gives us an easier schedule next year. Maybe have to draft another QB, but maybe this year we can find out about all 3. I just don't want a distraction to linger and hopefully the Jets realize Fitz is not worth the hassle.

We as fans may accept losing for draft picks, but nfl teams don't.

We don't build a team based on fans discomfort, trust me, I hate it too. But the real pressure to settle comes during training camp.

By declaring Fitz the starter, the Jets have declared geno the backup.
Bowles wasn't preaching competition and the best qb will start, Fitz is the undisputed starter. Logically, this leaves geno as a clear backup.

The Jets don't want to enter the season with a backup at qb. This deal gets done, we just won't be happy with the wait.

Hopefully Lee signs soon, but most rookie deals all wait on each other, then they fall like domino's. I'm hoping Lee signs by Monday, and Fitz the next week or during the first week of camp.

This is negotiating, this is how it goes. The Jets were very tight lipped with mo. We as fans are going to have to get used to these hardline negotiations, it seems to be mac's way.

Nows the time to find out if Geno, Petty or Hack is gonna be the guy and if it takes 5 games of geno stinking next man up and let petty go tje next 5 and if he is the man great if not ok Hack you get the end of this season to see if you are the NFL QB everyone raved about your freshman year and a lot of scouts love because you have all the tools..... Can't overpay for a QB nobody else wants.... barring any major injury to a starting QB Fitz is going nowhere and if their is an injury somewhere still no guarantee they will offer fitz more than the Jets.. Matter of fact I'd bet my house no one offers Fitz more than the Jets no matter what.

The thing is, I think Fitz and Mac are very similar. Highly intelligent, good negotiators.

But if the rumor is true, that this is a year 2 hang up, it gets done.

He's smart enough to know that if New Jersey raises its low gas tax, there is no other good reason for wanting to live in the state that made industrial pollution famous.

I just watched the Pats replay where we beat them in OT last year to put us in the "win and in" situation vs Buffalo. I would be willing to pay Fitz if he had won the Buffalo game. I just can't get past the fact that he has never directed a team to the playoffs. He seems to crumble when the lights are brightest. I also can't get past the last time he signed a big contract. I have a feeling the Jets FO feel the same way. I don't care what other QB's are making. I don't care that he set a record for most TD's with a franchise that has only had one "maybe" great QB. And now he looks fat at golf tournaments. Has't been practicing with his WR's or Forte. This guy is not Brady and can't just jump into training camp a week or more late and flip a switch. It really sucks that Ryan FREAKIN' Fitzpatrick is our best option.

Understandable issues. However, you have to pay guys based on the current market, honestly mac's biggest mistake was not extending Fitz when we traded for him. He was cheap and for 3 or 5 mill, would have been smart insurance, considering mac knew him in Houston and thought enough of him to trade for him. It also would have provided uswith 2 seasons of tape should he prove successful.

You can't judge Fitz on a10 year old deal, any more than you can sign Vick based on what he was 10 years ago. People change. Mac has seen Fitz on the field, in the locker room, in this system, and with these teammates. You need to keep context. We're not choosing between Fitz and brees, it's between geno and Fitz. Geno also is not a playoff qb and has not risen from mediocrity. Meaningless games against the dolphins don't open my wallet.

I think we know what we get with Fitz, and it's a much better chance at success than the alternative.

If we pass on Fitz, we still need to sign a backup behind geno. If that's 4 or 5 million, Fitz is only 8 million more, and for a starter not a backup.

That buffalo game was very winnable and a punch in the gut to us all. It's a fact that rex is always successful against Fitz.
We were a very 1 dimensional team in that game, which is actually a positive in my mind. We had so many bad injuries to key scorers and positions, yet should have won. I'd like that group back together for one or two more shots at it.

Fitz played half the year with a cast, ivory was mia,folk missed several games leading to like 6 missed fgs, Mangold was hobbled, mo broke his leg, Richardson was out of shape and missed 4 important starts, Revis played without his wrist.

In excited to get this team healthy and watch a second year. Remember these guys were out of the playoffs and went on a run. We came from behind, made clutch plays, and won out until buffalo.
Forte is more likely to play week 16 than ivory, and I like Amaro actually seeing the field.

We beat the awful Cowboys, Giants and Redskins who won division by default. We also beat the Browns, Titans and Jags. We beat the Dolphins twice. All of those except the Redskins picked in the top 10. Without trades we beat the worst team, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 8th sorriest teams in the NFL. We lost to TJ Yates. We couldn't beat a below average Buffalo team twice. Indy was a good win at the time, but we all know how that ended up. That leaves the Pats as our only meaningful win. Everything went our way last season. The schedule was easy. The weather was perfect. I'm on board with Fitz for $8M max now which is more than double what he made last season and that is probably double what the NFL thinks he is worth. I just don't think he worth waiting for or big dollars.
