Ham, I think 4qbs is guaranteed, gotta accept it.Petty is by far the most important thing to watch for tonight. Hack we know is not ready, this is a redshirt year for Hack, but we need to see some progress from Petty in year two. I'm hoping he at least looks like a reliable backup this year, otherwise we'll have to carry four QB's and lose a roster spot elsewhere.
Please don't take my post as an insult. I like petty and hack. He's proved nothing to us as Jets fans.... why? Well we haven't seen him everyday in OTA's Training Camp, Practices, in the film room.... But I think like I said a million times before for 3 games last year the Jets were comfortable enough to have him as a backup while Geno recovered from today's 1 yr anniversary of the punch...As well as shown enough to keep him on the gameday roster all of last year and not go to the practice squad.... Now I agree from your perspective he hasn't proven anything yet but that perspective hold water until he plays in the regular season.... cause even if he shows enough to be the back up this year... another good camp. improvement with each preseason game it still means nothing till it's for real... But from my perspective he has proved a lot so far and unfortunately to mydogs point of the only way he proves to be a back up is in pre-season against 3rd and 4th stringers with maybe some gametime against a mix of first and mostly 2nd and 3rd stringers...
Please don't take my post as an insult. I like petty and hack.
Just simple logic, until you do something, you haven't done anything. And you're right it's not his fault, and I didn't infer it was. But facts are facts, he was drafted as a project with great upside, and all he's had are limited opportunities with backups.
I think petty and hack might be close to each other in mac's head. This is pettys second season in a pro offense, as it is hack, if you consider his one year under Obrien.
Last year the logic made sense for petty to backup. The thinking explained by mac was that it was a pick your poison scenario. Petty was inexperienced, but knowledgeable in the system. A backup was experienced in the nfl,but would have to play catchup to learn the system.
Combined with a short absence by geno and potentially little exposure, they went with petty as the backup for a couple weeks.
I think it is a testament to petty, but I'm cautious to read to much into it.

I know I'm not insulting you, I meant I in no way was slighting petty. Not insulted.. I just don't look at it from the same perspective... I know Petty has improving to do.. And I am a big fan of his potential with knowing he has to improve....
I don't see Mac risking the first 3 games of the season with a non veteran, inexperienced, clearly not ready to play in the nfl as a backup and risk an 0-3 start if Fitz gets hurt. Specifically with Fitz coming off an injury himself.... I think Petty has shown enough to Mac and Bowles that if push came to shove he knows the system well enough and played well enough to still give us a shot at winning games... Now is he starter ready - nope but is he closer to being a solid back up and possibly starter ready then we think - my perspective oh howthe team has handled him and what they have said about him is yes... And to your point the upside on him and Hack are very very high.... Which is why I said in other posts I think they want to carry the 4QBs leave Geno as the backup not rush Petty and let him develop the way they have planned out. Only thing that will change that is Petty showing tremendous leaps from tonight to Game 3 or 4 of the preseason that says he is ready to be the backup and possibly start.....
I know I'm not insulting you, I meant I in no way was slighting petty.
We'll see how it goes.
I think they took a calculated risk last year because the fa alternative was not an improvement over petty. Not to mention, the worst case scenario was that Fitz got hurt, petty finished the game with a ton of running plays, and if he stunk it up, they could still sign a fa. It wasn't an either/or decision.
We're all guessing what the internal opinions are.
I think geno is a 99% goner next season, pending a meteoric rise in play following an opportunity to see the field.
Here's a question. If Fitz is on a1 year deal because mac doesn't see him starting next year, and petty and hack are riding the bench this season, how do you promote either to starter next year? What would that decision be made on?
How would you know if you need aqb in free agency?
