Good picks Cy. I wouldn't mind seeing a QB in 3rd or 4th, but I wouldn't want to force it either.

way too early for those shenanigans. When you discover the players at team facilities the week before the draft, you can generally nail it down to 4-5 prospects.

Calvin Pryor was a name that bubbled up the day before the draft for us, but I remember the year we drafted Coples, Chandler Jones was the guy the Jets brought in twice the week before the draft but somehow we didnt take him. I definitely thought that hot air was more than just that.

Sanchez was an obvious pick the year we took him. Everyone knew we were making a run at him.

I think the week before the draft names start getting penciled in to their picks, and then there's always a few curve balls in there. From bowles interview today, I think we're locked in to OLB. I really do. I also think the Jets already knows what the rest of the world doesn't...Winston is going #1 and Mariota is going #2 , period. Jets already know they're not in the QB running, IMO.

I think that was the case with Beckham last year, Phil Taylor the year he came out (luckily), Freeney the year he came out, etc, etc. I've seen a lot of times when coaches and GMs are asked about player A or B that is hot on that teams name in mock drafts...I remember Rex rolling his eyes and saying I dont expect to get a chance to draft him...even though all mocks have them falling to us, then a guy everyone pencils to us goes #1 2 and never sniffs #2 4 where we were picking...I think that's where Mariota is. Mocks have him at #6 , Jets are in the real world when it comes to the NFL, they know #6 is a pipe dream, IMO, even if people doing mocks havent figured it out yet.

LOL, You can lock my picks (wish list), but my gut is telling me Fowler, Gregory or Beasley @ 6. My heart wants Cooper.

I agree with your gut. I think the Jets are all in on pass rusher at #6 and they already know it. They probably think 90% chance its OLB unless something crazy happens.

which is the reason i don't lock it until a few days before draft that way you can change or edit your posts 100 times a day if you wanted.

Cy,

Just so you know, we have two 7's, our own (6th Pick in RD 7) and Chicago's (7th Pick in RD 7)

The Bears 7 comes back to us in the Marshall deal.

So its back-to-back picks for the Jets near the top of RD 7

We'll see closer to the draft as you mention. Pay attention to any chatter towards Amari Cooper and maybe the 2nd tier OLB's. If things shake out at #2 with Rivers going to TEN or simply a selection of Mariota by the Titans, this would slide Leonard Williams to the Raiders which would free Cooper. Would they pass him up in light of his recorded great times?
The Jets seemed to like the two from Miss St - Preston Smith and Benardrick McKinney and I think they view both as OLB's in their scheme if they go for an OLB in the 2nd round. Here's a quick write-up on both:

Edge rushers the story at Mississippi State...linebacker Benardrick McKinney and defensive end Preston Smith elected to stand on their solid Combine performances and elected only to participate in positional drills. Not surprisingly, each excelled, demonstrating the length and range that led to each prospect earning top 100 projections on NFLDraftScout.com's board. Of the two, the 6-foot-5, 271 pound Smith was said to have the slightly more impressive workout, according to a league scout on hand. Smith showed impressive agility and strength throughout the defensive line drills and showed some body control when changing directions while dropping and even catching passes. The 6-foot-4, 246 pound McKinney showed "light feet and quick, heavy hands" during pass rush drills - traits that have scouts from 3-4 and 4-3 teams alike intrigued. The scout estimated that every team in the league was represented. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com

CBS Sports currently has rising Smith as a borderline 1st-2nd and McKinney firmly as a 2nd however I've seen a lot of chatter elsewhere towards his going in the 1st.

Actually we have pick 7a (198), 7b (199) & 7c (compensatory pick); however, I ran out of players after the punter !

Come on Superman55, let's here your predictions now, it's too easy to pick the week of the draft. Lock in now so you won't come back 6 months from now and say Joe Blow was your guy ! Let's hear it now.

I like Bryce Petty QB but thought we need another good RB @ 70 and don't think Petty will be there in the 4th round ? I think our next starting QB is playing @ Penn St or Michigan St. next season ?

Let me start by clearing declaring my ignorance in all things CFB.

Having said that, I tend to worry when a player "shoots up the charts" because of their combine. The only time I think it's warranted is when the player comes from a small school and doesn't get "discovered" until that moment. But I don't see how that's possible for two kids who played on Mississippi State? I would assume they have enough tape to accurately be assessed before the combine, so things like straight-line speed don't really impress me.

Again, I could be WAY off in my assessment (and probably am). But I'd be nervous taking someone in the 2nd round who got there more as a track star than a football player (Stephen Hill anyone?) . . .

This was actually based of their pro days. Smith has moved up but I wouldn't say shot up...he's a known entity. McKinney has been on everyone's radar and the deal with him was he was tested at OLB by the Jets in particular and reportedly did very well. I think our guy (something 51?) on the pro day thread gave us this.

Gotcha.

Like I said, I wouldn't know these kids from a hole in the wall, but I always feel better when the experts "already knew" how good the kid was going to be, instead of changing their minds once they saw him in shorts . . .

Just watched an interesting clip on Bleacher Report about the Wisconsin RT Rob Havenstein to the Jets in round 3, as a solid replacement for Giacomini eventually. He sure looks like a mauler. Anyone got more Intel on this kid? Any Wisconsin folks out there?

Monster 6'7"/332 of a future RT. Plays stiff with no lateral movement. He got toasted in Wisconsin's bowl game. Projected 4th rounder. I hope we move Carpenter to RT next year after Breno is gone and slide Dozier to RG ?

I don't see the Carpenter move when he's a finesse blocker. At RT, you need a mauler. Even at RG.

I think the new regime will pay very close attention and see who rises up to take the two right side OL positions. By resigning Colon for insurance, you have Breno, Colon, Winters, Dozier, Aboushi and whoever else may emerge. If this doesn;t sort itself out, the Jets will address next offseason.
