Don't misunderstand me, ideally I'd rather be there for the birth of my child than not be there, what father wouldn't, shame on any father who would rather be at the bar or the game or what have you, but this is a special circumstance, most of us will never be in a position to become millionaires at our jobs, thus in a position to make a life for our children that most of us only dreamed about for ourselves as kids, and IMO if you are fortunate enough to be in that position, thats a priority, not selfishly, but for the baby. I'm sure if the baby could talk, he would say don't blow off mini camp, pops, don't do anything that can jeopardize my life on easy street. :)

Now does blowing off his first mini camp jeopardize his career? Probably not, but it already puts him behind the 8-Ball for his rookie season and in a position where he has to play catch-up, and sometimes that can snowball, next thing that happens is you don't win the # 3 spot out of camp and fans are calling you a bust, now you have to overcome the negativity and bad vibes, and it all started with missing reps.

Thats not overstating it, I've seen that scenario play itself out hundreds of times in my life, usually due to an injury.

the guy has been there working in the off-season. he's been at all the voluntary sessions as far as i know. injuries can happen anytime, including at the OTAs...

not to go too iverson on you here, but we're talking an OTA practice here. not a game. not a pre-season game. not a practice in training camp. but an mini-camp in june.

i don't care how much money you make. your family should come first, and props to devin smith for being there for the birth of his child.

this isn't game week. this isn't missing a sunday in the fall. opening game is 3 months away. he's been working in the off-season, and will have all of training camp to prepare for the season.

of course, i say this as my wife and i are expected our first child in november. and all i can say is i'm trying to put away as many vacation days as i can to be there with my wife and see my child born. wouldn't miss it for all the nfl contracts in the world.

Then why even have OTA's and Mini Camp?

Seriously, if its so trivial and so unimportant, why even have it in the first place, why doesn't Bowles and his staff just go on vacation and tell the players to do likewise, and we'll see you guys at training camp?

I'm just curious, how would you feel if NOBODY showed up for OTA's and Mini Camp, only the coaches?

Exactly, but they don't sign the checks so it is perfectly OK to blow off the team that is paying you and stay home. I have worked since I was 12 and that was an actual paycheck. I have been married for 27 years to the same wife and my son is 31; still talks to me just about every day and respects the hell out of me because I am there for him every single day. Never met him until he was 3. He doesn't remember a fricking day of me not there or the useless bum who brought him into this world. Just the way life is. Sorry if I ruffled the guys who think they are such wonderful guys for being at a birth.

i guess i don't consider being there with your wife and being at the birth of your child going on a vacation.

you made quite a jump from one guy being excused to be at the birth of his child to the entire team blowing off ota's and minicamp.

Its a fair debate whether or not Smith should have been working at his job this week or waiting around for the birth of his baby. I understand people can make a strong argument for the latter. I understand that my argument is a lot harder to make in 2015 than it would have been 50 years ago, when men took their responsibility as bread winners deadly serious. Trust me, I get all that. The only thing I took issue with in your post was your quoting that imbecile Allen Iverson, as if to suggest practice was a big waste of time, that it has no real value in the grand scheme of things.

I totally disagree with that idea. IMO practice is an essential part of preparation, especially valuable for rookies.

These kids are being prepared to play in the toughest league on the face of the earth, the NFL Graveyard is littered with hotshot college players, and you can't get these kids enough reps to prepare them for what they're about to encounter.

you are right. i can see how my use of the iverson quote can come off as dismissive of the importance of practice.

i was trying to be light-hearted. i guess that didn't come across well.

i hear you on how important practice is, particularly to a rookie who's head is likely spinning adjusting to the speed and complexity of the pros. i was just really trying to say that i didn't see this as the same as missing a game. and given the season is so far away, he will have plenty of time to make up what he may have missed (although i get it that you can't replicate the reps). from all accounts (as far as i can recall), smith has been there at voluntary workouts and camps putting in work.

i should add we don't know if it is a "simple" natural birth or other issues may be present for the mother or child.

Thats true and I want to say, unequivocally and without qualification, that if there are any complications at all or even a real threat of complications, then to hell with football and everything else, you drop everything to be there.

Ok maybe I exaggerated a bit after seeing our one doomsday northern "fan" with his normal routine. My apologies.

Im just thankful the board isn't all the way to the left one day and all the way to the right the next day over June practices. After a preseason game, I could see a dramatic shift if something is good vs treacherous...I'm actually pretty happy with the boards maturity the last couple days.

Maybe its me, but i feel Owusu will be this pre-seasons:

David Clowney
Ryan Spadola
Clyde Gates
Greg Salas

Hopefully i'am wrong and he can contribute more than those guys ever did.

he's also a candidate to be primary KR and PR...i dont remember that being the case with the above names.

hahaha, well, im ignoring half the board now...so Im glad I dont even know what he's talking about. Sounds like it was another worthless debate. Im down to the handful of posters worth reading. That number gets smaller by the day and makes this board a better experience...like scrolling through the newspaper for good articles without having to read Mehta. I recommend it for everyone...even if you ignore me. :)

7. Odds and ends: A couple of rookies, defensive end Leonard Williams and linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin, got some work with the first-team nickel package. ... Brent Qvale and Brian Winters shared time at right guard with the starters. ... Nice practice for tight end Jeff Cumberland, who made a couple of grabs in red-zone drills. The offense was significantly better in the red zone than the previous day. ... Safety Rontez Miles was active near the line of scrimmage, but he let a potential interception sail through his hands.

Dan, I think you are underestimating the value of mini camp and OTA's for a rookie. The transition from college to pro football is immense, its almost impossible to fully prepare in one off season, only a very small minority of college players make a smooth and seamless transition to the next level, for the rest their heads are spinning and its extremely difficult, even if you attend every film session and take every rep you can get, but even more so if you start missing reps.

For a veteran its not quite as imperative, but for rookies these reps are invaluable.

Ham, With all due respect, i honestly think your really underestimating the birth of a child.

Three days my man that you can have back in the 20 -25 plus days of training camp, not to mention the rest of the season practice sessions. He can never have back the great Bond that all three of them share the moment life comes into this world.

He's a 2nd rounder, he aint getting cut. He can ill afford to miss three measly days. The birth of his child wont define him as a football player, but more so as a father figure who places family first, above all things...ALL THINGS.

Gates was also a return man -- not that it matters now. Owusu should be in the mix for the 5th or 6th WR spot and I would not necessarily count out Walter Powell just yet. I think he is the only guy on our roster who has experience as both a KR and PR. He did both in college and he returned kicks and punts last season. Owusu has only returned kicks, not punts. And Powell did open some eyes yesterday beating Revis for a TD.
