Maybe I missed. I thought despite a bad practice there wasn't much talk about QB at all here yesterday. A couple posters even pointed it out on this thread that they were glad no one was getting too high or low after yesterday's bad practice. I actually didn't see a single QB debate yesterday...

Ok maybe I exaggerated a bit after seeing our one doomsday northern "fan" with his normal routine. My apologies.

Yes, he came to my mind, too. The second Geno had a bad practice he didn't miss a beat.

Geno has a good practice, and all of a sudden some people forget their passwords to log into this site.

I'm as old school as they come but I'd give a pass Devin if his wife is close or if they have it scheduled. We're talking practice and not the playoffs or super bowl. First kid you got to be there.

Could not agree more. Family always comes first no matter what. It would be a sour taste in Devin's mouth if Bowles repremanded him for attending the birth of his child.

No brainer here, what Devin & the Jets did is the right way to go. Hell, we've all got "personal" days at work. Any one that wouldnt use one (if not all) of them to capture one of the greatest moments in your respective life just doesnt have a pulse.

Chris Owusu is getting Devin's Smith's reps right now...

Maybe its me, but i feel Owusu will be this pre-seasons:

David Clowney
Ryan Spadola
Clyde Gates
Greg Salas

Hopefully i'am wrong and he can contribute more than those guys ever did.

Maybe, but it is 3 days in the last 120 days. So, the "personal" days argument doesn't quite cut it with me. You are making a ton of dough for the next 3-5 years on average, get your arse in here. Spent some of that dough on a rented private jet if you need to get home. How many of these guys ever go and get a real job after leaving the NFL???Poor fellas have to play a game for a few years and be set for life.
Greatest moment of your life, get real. Watching your old lady scream every obscenity in the world and a repulsive little cone head fall out of a blown lower unit that will suck you dry for the next 27 years...not the greatest moment in my life...signed Mr. no pulse.

Maybe the most repulsive, vile, inhumane and objectionable post made to date here at this forum since inception

But all kidding aside, I don't even know if my father was there when I was born, maybe he was and maybe he wasn't, I have no recollection of the situation and it never occurred too me to ask, now he's dead and Ill never know, but I didn't give a sh*t when he was alive and I still don't give a sh*t now. You know what I cared about? That he put a roof over our heads, kept food on the table, the fridge and cabinets were always full, that I always had respectable clothes to wear to school, and that he was a good man to my mother. In other words that he was a good husband and father. Thats the stuff I remember, not whether or not he was there the day I was pulled out of the womb. Thats why I view it as WAY MORE IMPORTANT that Devin Smith is in a position to make millions of dollars and create a much better life for his baby then he ever had, provided he doesn't F IT UP, and you know what, a rookie blowing off mini camp is not a good start, rookies need every rep they can get, thats why even a minor injury in training camp that keeps him off the practice field for as little as one week, can put him in a position where he's playing catch-up and sabotage his rookie season. I've seen it happen, plenty, these reps are invaluable for rookies. If anything there are not enough reps in one off season to adequately prepare rookies for the NFL grind. A rookie blowing off reps is NOT a good thing, regardless of the reason.

It's three lousy days in June that mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. Come September when the bullets fly for real, no one on the Jets (incuding management) will recollect his absence from "Mini-Camp".
Yet Devin will always remember the best day of his life.

I personally feel fathers always remember "THAT day" especially being there with the love of their life. That is truly the turning point of their life. Yet, unless its a dead beat dad.

sg3, I think he was being funny, not literal.

hopefully. if not sg3 did not go far enough. My first two i was called at home{we were not allowed if delivery room}. My third one i was there and if that doesn't leave you in awe of life, nothing will. smith was there for ota's & i'm sure he will i\be in chicago with the receivers and geno

Don't misunderstand me, ideally I'd rather be there for the birth of my child than not be there, what father wouldn't, shame on any father who would rather be at the bar or the game or what have you, but this is a special circumstance, most of us will never be in a position to become millionaires at our jobs, thus in a position to make a life for our children that most of us only dreamed about for ourselves as kids, and IMO if you are fortunate enough to be in that position, thats a priority, not selfishly, but for the baby. I'm sure if the baby could talk, he would say don't blow off mini camp, pops, don't do anything that can jeopardize my life on easy street. :)

Now does blowing off his first mini camp jeopardize his career? Probably not, but it already puts him behind the 8-Ball for his rookie season and in a position where he has to play catch-up, and sometimes that can snowball, next thing that happens is you don't win the # 3 spot out of camp and fans are calling you a bust, now you have to overcome the negativity and bad vibes, and it all started with missing reps.

Thats not overstating it, I've seen that scenario play itself out hundreds of times in my life, usually due to an injury.

Dan, I think you are underestimating the value of mini camp and OTA's for a rookie. The transition from college to pro football is immense, its almost impossible to fully prepare in one off season, only a very small minority of college players make a smooth and seamless transition to the next level, for the rest their heads are spinning and its extremely difficult, even if you attend every film session and take every rep you can get, but even more so if you start missing reps.

For a veteran its not quite as imperative, but for rookies these reps are invaluable.
