Brandon Marshall’s advice to Geno Smith: Follow Ryan Fitzpatrick’s lead

Brandon Marshall believes Geno Smith has a future in the NFL but still has a lot to learn and should follow Ryan Fitzpatrick’s example.

The veteran Jets wide receiver, appearing Tuesday morning on WFAN’s “Boomer & Carton” show from San Francisco, just finished his first season in New York and had a chance to evaluate Smith.

“This was the toughest year I’ve had,” said Marshall, who had 109 catches for 1,502 yards and 14 touchdowns. “It was just a grind. I love playing football. It’s never work for me. But I’m at the point in my career where I just want to win. And coming in I felt like we were behind the 8-ball because we have so many new pieces. Coming in we had Geno and he wasn’t established yet. So I knew he was a quarterback who could get the job done, but it was a big question mark.”

Smith played in 30 games as the Jets quarterback in his first two seasons but lost his starting job to Fitzpatrick after former teammate IK Enemkpali broke his jaw during a training-camp fight. Fitzpatrick went on to have the best season of his career, completing 60 percent of his passes for 3,905 yards and franchise-record 31 touchdowns as the Jets went 10-6 and narrowly missed the playoffs.

After Fitzpatrick injured his thumb minutes into the Jets’ 34-20 loss in Oakland on Nov. 1, Smith was called on and completed 27 of 42 pass for 265 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. That was Smith’s only game action of the season. Marshall said he believed it was good for Smith to learn the business and how things work this season, which Marshall said Smith never had a chance to do since he started as a rookie in 2013.

“The kid is really talented,” said Marshall, who will be part of CBS’ Super Bowl 50 pregame show on Sunday. “I’m glad that he had the opportunity to really sit back and learn from a pro.”

Fitzpatrick, 33, will play in his 11th season in 2016. He is a free agent, but the Jets have made it a big priority to re-sign the veteran.

Marshall made it clear that Fitzpatrick is the Jets’ quarterback.

“If [Smith] can learn from Fitzpatrick, I think he’ll be fine,” Marshall said. “But as of right now, it’s Ryan’s team.”

Marshall also offered some advice to Smith.

“I tell him all the time, when you walk into the building you have a notebook,” Marshall said. “One is our week’s plan, our game plan, the team we’re facing. Number two is a Ryan Fitzpatrick notebook. You need to be writing down every single thing that this guy is doing on and off the field. How he’s leading guys, the time he shows up to work, how’s he preparing in the weight room and the meeting room because if he does that, there’s no doubt in my mind that this kid can play in this game and at a high level because he’s very talented.”

Smith said last month as the Jets cleared out their lockers that he still believes he has what it takes to be a starting quarterback in the NFL and that he’s not content to be a backup.

Marshall, however, said Smith needs to prepare for whatever chance he gets.

“When he gets his opportunity, he needs to be ready,” Marshall said. “Wherever it is.”

No , I think he got it right.

Just like smith said after the Raiders game. "I'm auditioning for who ever is watching"

I'm fine with those comments. These players have egos. Theydon't want to be backups.

Agree.

Right up until the final cuts the Jets weren't sure Fitz would be able to play. That's why they brought both Matt Flynn, and Josh Jonhson in a few weeks before the season started. Both played fairly well the final pre-season game, and then they were both released. At that point I think the FO/CS decided Petty had come along far enough to back up for a few weeks.

As far as Smith being named the starter goes, in the beginning of camp Bowles was playing the faux QB competition game. He didn't want it to be released that they had signed a QB to replace Smith, who probably wasn't going to be ready opening day. Gailey, who knew Fitz very well, and knew he was a better QB then Smith wasn't having any part of it. He didn't want to look like the idiot who choose Smith over Fitz, so he blew the whistle that it was a rigged competition.

Bowles had to do some spinning at the time
Everything you just typed is just speculation. No one knows what they were thinking. I will say this: if they had no intention of starting Smith, why draft a speed WR in the second round? He would have been wasted under Fitz (turned out to be true). Far as Gailey goes, he accepted the job months before the Jets got Fitz. He may have HOPED they would get him and maybe even was told they would TRY to get him, but no pro coach would accept a job HOPING a team gets a particular player. You go in knowing what you already have and wait to see who else comes in.

As fans, we really need to stop with the anti-Geno bullshit. He's a Jet, and it behooves us for him to be good. All it takes is one bad hit for him to be the starter. So we better hope he's improved and is able to play at a higher level, which FYI he has done in several games. Geno's problem isn't that he sucks, it's that he is inconsistent. Geno played very well in the 27-25 loss to NE in 2014, even leading the team into FG range. Sadly the next week he careened all the way to the opposite side and threw 3 picks on his first 3 passes. But what else do you expect when you throw a young QB in as a starter with hardly any decent receivers to throw too and an OC who won't tailor the game plan to your skill set?

flgreen if it doesn't work out for petty with the jets it won't be because his situation isn't ideal..

i'm excited to find out what the kid has learned from year one going into year two OTA's/training camp..

we'll see.....

+1 Bryce Petty really is getting, at least so far, the great training regiment and given time to develop. If he fails? They'll be no question it is HIS doing. I just hope he does get it because the Jets coaching staff is really pulling out all of the stops for this kid.

don't forget fitzpatrick & his family as well.. he lived with them for a time before training camp.. petty is on record saying, he's learned more about the QB position from fitzpatrick than he's learned about it his entire life..

just another reason the inevitable re-signing of fitzpatrick is so ideal for us..

we will get an idea of what mac, gailey & bowles think of petty based on if & what round we draft a QB..

& yes flgreen i still don't see smith on the '16 roster..

nice to hear mac believes petty has better arm talent than smith.. first time i heard that from him..

I don't know if it would be that 13, or maybe they are just hedging their bets? To me, it's just so important not to ever put all your eggs in one basket. The Jets have been guilty of that more than once now in the Rex years. The Jets always went all out with an unproven guy. When they drafted Mark Sanchez, they went all in with him and he had proven nothing. Same thing with Geno Smith.

See what I'm thinking this is, is they are just thinking that competition is a good thing, it makes sense to challenge Petty and make him earn everything he gets with the Jets, and if it doesn't work out they already have another being developed.

we are on the same page as far as petty is concerned maine..

i hope mac does like a QB enough take a shot on in the upcoming draft, even if they are happy with petty's development.. LOLz if nothing else that would almost guarantee we get rid of what's his face but more importantly, if petty does becomes our next starter, it will come from a legitimate competition for the job.. as well it should be..

I agree.

If a QB is there in any round who is BAP, they pull the trigger. Not so much because they don't like Petty, but because QB is just a valuable position it's good throwing a few picks at it.

If a QB like Cook, Hackenberg, or Cardale Jones is there in the 4th, pull the trigger.

all three of us are on the same page..

i already have a rooting interest in petty but not enough of one that don't believe he shouldn't have to earn what he gets as a jet..

if petty is the guy i hope he is, he'll beat out whoever is brought in..

if not, next man up..

I have faith in maccs judgement. There's 2 paths, 1 they feel petty is ready to stand in the 2 spot and they can put a drafted qb on the bench, should one good enough to stay be available. 2, they don't feel petty is a firm number 2qb and need geno to stay, they can't have 4qbs on the roster week 1.

forget'"can't.." they won't have 4 QB's on the roster week 1..

if we pick a QB in the up coming draft it will be to relieve smith of a roster spot..

my thoughts anyway....
