Been looking for someone to invent a time machine so we can go back in see this live.

One of Mrs Fud's (many) party game questions, if you can go back and see 3 concerts, what would they be? Some folks break this up into shows they have seen and shows they haven't, so pick 3 of each (not as easy as you'd think)

seen:
1. Mahavishnu at Central Park in Aug 1973 (when they recorded Nothingness, and this time I'm going to shout out something more clever)
2. 1968 at the Singer Bowl: Jimi, Janis, Chambers Bros, ("and my soul had been psychadelicized" which may have actually happened that night) and Soft Machine
3. King Crimson also at Central Park, same year, Lark's Tongues tour, but without Muir

so many left off, Genesis at the Felt Forum in the Selling England tour (almost as good as Musical Box's version :) ), UK (w/Bozzio, not Bruford), Yes (when Bruford was there), Weather Report, all those G3 shows (the ones with Gilbert and Petrucci in particular), ELP and a band no one remembers from Italy called PFM come to mind. There was also a show at My Father's Place that I forgot who played, but she was there and those seats were verrrry close to each other). Special consideration to the Miles show at MSG in 1970 although he only opened for BST that night, but the Yippie incident with the flaming bag of waste and the subsequent screaming match my drummer had with Gladys Knight (who we had no idea who she was) at Palisades Park made it all so historic

not seen:
1. Beatles at the Cavern (forget Shea, you couldn't hear them from what I've heard)
2. Coltrane anytime anywhere
3. Mar Y Sol Festival in PR ('72?) if festivals count, if not any RTF when Billy Conners was in the band (before Chick messing with the ARP)

this list could go on for pages !!!

oh, against the rules is picking someone like Taylor Swift just to go there to throw rotten tomatoes at. Also against the rules is going back to see your own band although if I did, it would give me an opportunity to tell my young self, "when our name comes up on the Jets season ticket waiting list, please please please tell them no thanks)
1) the Romans Vs the lions......Sorry you are talking music here only,

1) Genesis with Ant on Trespass
2) Genesis On the Selling Tour
3) Genesis On the foxtrot Tour'
4) Genesis on April 10th 1976 in Boston *
* Ok I cheated

Can't you bend the rules & allow the Romans Vs the lions? *screams could be like singing)

Wow. Never heard of Bird's plastic sax story. Thanks for sharing.

This quote in the article really struck a...er...chord. What a band of legendary players. Bud Powell is maybe my favorite pianist.

"Parker was joined by four other architects of bebop in the one-off concert: trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Bud Powell, bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach. It was the first time all five had played together."
I wish our OL could do that

Seen (Really difficult to choose three):
The Who, MSG, Quadrophenia Tour, 1973
Queen/Mott The Hoople, Uris Theater, NYC, 1974. Queens first tour in America and the first rock concert on Broadway.
Led Zeppelin, MSG, '77 Tour of America.

Honorable mention (Tough, I'm doing it):
The Clash, Bond's Disco, NYC, 1981
Joe Pass, Oscar Peterson, The Count Basie Band, and Ella Fitzgerald, Carnegie Hall, 1976. Greatest example of musicianship I've ever had the pleasure to witness live.

Not Seen:
Robert Johnson, Various Southern Juke Joints, 1930s. I just want to be in his presence and watch him work the fretboard.
Van Halen/Black Sabbath, MSG, 1978. Unknown VH blew Sabbath off the stage. Sections of the Garden were ablaze. Saw VH a few times years later.
Bob Dylan, Newport Folk Festival, 1965. Dylan goes electric live for the first time. Crowd goes berserk. Then wins most of them back. What a moment.

Honorable mention:
Filming of the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus, 1968. Just to see The Who's incendiary "A Quick One" and The Dirty Mac, a hastily assembled band consisting of Lennon, Richards, Clapton, and Mitch Mitchell doing "Yer Blues".
1967's Monterey International Pop Festival, just to see Hendrix and The Who blow the doors off the musical establishment as well as gleefully watching Hendrix and Townshend try to out do each other smashing guitars and amps.
Forgot ELP's performance at The Isle of Wight Festival, 1970. Emerson shocked folks with his dexterity and penchant for stabbing his organ. The Hammond, not his junk. lol

Happy Jimmy Page's birthday !

80 (wow)

First two albums and Since I've Been Loving You

changed everything

I'm still trying and failing miserably to get people to do Heartbreaker :)
Happy Birthday, Jimmy. Man, all my rock heroes are entering their 8th decade. Page is still my gold standard guitar god. His and Townshend's styles are who I feebly attempt to mimic the most.

It's impossible for me to pick a favorite LZ song. There are so many to choose from, especially on their first two records which you mention.

I really did not like the LZ movie, The Song Remains the Same, especially the cheesy fantasy segments. But a few years ago, I did a deep dive into the film and have come to appreciate many of the performances. In particular, Page's performance in this one just blew me away. I've always loved this tune, but watching/listening to what Page is doing in a live setting--keeping both the rhythm and lead parts flowing so beautifully--is just mesmerizing and impressive.

see, another guy influenced by the great Jed Clampett on the 2B neck !!!

funny thing about Jimmy is how he just let mistakes come through when he records and the mistakes make it even better !

Also, new Source Audio pedal, a ZIO for bass

I told myself I won't just bite at their next offering no matter what. Why do I lie to myself?

Here's a great example of Jimmy just letting it all rip warts and all. I've loved this performance from some radio broadcast I found on YT a few years back. (From Denmark of all places.) This is a colorized version which is cool.

Note that Jimmy is playing the Tele given to him by his friend Jeff Beck as a gift for recommending him for The Yardbirds' gig. The f*cking power coming from those four guys is astounding. No one sounded like this in '69.
