Just re-reading this lengthy interview with the birthday boy, originally published in 2020. Tons of great Page/Yardbirds/LZ information.

@Fudbutter You will appreciate Page's comments on guitars, amps, gear, effects, and especially his Danelectro.

Here's a great example of Jimmy just letting it all rip warts and all. I've loved this performance from some radio broadcast I found on YT a few years back. (From Denmark of all places.) This is a colorized version which is cool.

Note that Jimmy is playing the Tele given to him by his friend Jeff Beck as a gift for recommending him for The Yardbirds' gig. The f*cking power coming from those four guys is astounding. No one sounded like this in '69.

now that was cool, they were so young back then !

nice just sitting on teh floor in front of these guys like it's some basement on Long Island and some guy from high school says come over and see my band practice

Staten Island's legendary pickup master supercharges Gretsch pickups. I actually met Larry a million years ago.

Hair metal on a Country Gentleman, goodness gracious !

Never played a Gretsch and always intended to get a semi hollow. Once on 48th St in the early 70's I was walking down from the Orange Julius (most expensive snack place in history) and I hear "psst". There was guy in the doorway next to Gracin's (loved THAT store) and he says "wanna buy a guitar? $10". It was a White Falcon. Priced about the same as Gibson back then, I figured there was a slight possibility that the instrument may have not been his to sell so I passed. Back then these were country guy guitars and we had no country in NY at all (thankfully). However, it would probably fetch about $3M or so now and could have sold it to make PSL payments.

NAMM is coming at the end of the month, it used to be the most exciting time of the year for some but the market is so competetive now that no one waits for NAMM to release anything anymore. I would still give a body part to be there but it would be so much a sensory overload that it would probaly cook what little functional circuits I have left in my brain

Source Audio, who just came out with what looks like an amazing bass preamp (a bass ZIO !) has the "red pedal" coming, supposed to be a game changer, otherwise all we seem to get now are Tube Screamer/Blues Breakers clones and modelling gear that is just like the other modelling gear out except now it's more expensive

I need to win LOTTO soon

@Fudbutter Geez, a White falcon for $10? Now, it seems so crazy even if it was ripped off. I loved "shopping" on 48th St.

I never owned a Gretsch, but have played a couple of their electrics and acoustics. The tone coming off Gretsch pickups is totally unique. I like the overall "twang" and growl. Would definitely buy one of their Electromatic Jet guitars with Bigsby. Pretty decent price at around $600.

Finally, NAMM has become part huckster, part clown act posturing. Not the same as it once was. Too much stuff clouds the important products.

Just saw that Vox presented this very cool travel (or otherwise) guitar at NAMM. Love that they made it in the classic 60's teardrop shape. Loaded with an amp and effects. I might buy it if it were a couple hundred bucks less than the $600 price tag.

just saw this. I would be great for travel wouldn't it?

I wonder how much it weighs

nothing else, you just pick it up, don't have to fire up the rig or anything

I need to win LOTTO

Right? Having an amp and all the effects built in is really an inducement to buy. A drum machine?! Kids today have no idea what a stone age it was back in 60s/70s related to guitars, amps, as well as simple effects like a fuzz box, wah-wah or phase shifter.

Wow & I am still reaching for snooze on my clock.....I need to get up to speed with you guys

You can do the opening to Watcher in the Skies with this thing (love the Mellotron). Problem is that NO ONE has a %^$@# clue what it is. (another story) Speaking thereof, can we agree that Mr. Banks is the most underrated keyboard player of his generation?

This is where the educational system has failed society. SAT exams should have had three parts instead of two, Math, Verbal and Prog.

Hope he used that new all-in-one Vox with effects on full bore.

Seriously, how amazing is that procedure the doctors employed to help the man?

I will admit to giving this some thought as to what to play and on what. After all, this could be the last gig (and probably the way things have been going since Covid, the best attended)

You can't bring your no 1 in case you keel over during the procedure (could break the headstock off). Can't bring a Les Paul (too heavy). Can't bring a Fender (single coils for the last gig? uh, no), so maybe the Flying V, lightweight, LP Pu's, easy to put on your lap. Then forget about keeping it simple. Anyone I ever helped out over the past half century better be there not only setting up a 25 unit pedal board, but making up a nice backing jam band. Gotta keep it quiet enough though so the staff can do the surgery, so maybe a Kempler or Fractal and the backup guys direct through a board and PA ?

This brings up a fun image. As you jam away, the surgeon is adjusting things in there, he makes you speed up, slow down, maybe adjust the blues portion of the brain to get a more emotion wrenching bend. He gets you to Shawn Lane/Steve Vai speed and you say, "keep going Doc".

just a thought

What an awesome post to start the day. All great concepts.

I have two schools of thought of this. One, I somehow have my 60s era Martin and strum "Ramble On". Two, locate a ES-335 and cycle through every Chuck Berry lick/double stop I can muster.
