Only saw that comparison at CBSsports and they are pretty much not considered that reliable in such comparisons. For the sake of accuracy, nfl.com compared him with Austin Davis and I read two other comparisons, one with Tannehill and the other with Wilson.

And FTR our only QBs NOT from the defenseless Big 12 are Fitzpatrick and Heaps and I'm guessing the Ivy League is fairly defenseless by NFL standards too

Let's just watch the kid in the preseason. Everything said about Petty now is projecting. We need to see how quickly he picks everything up.

I know that...and we know how you feel about Geno. I haven't read a single article comparing Petty to Russell. If he had any Russell in him than he probably wouldn't have been the 5th QB taken in a 2QB draft. Did Fitz run a shotgun spread, one read offense like Geno and Petty? Plus Fitz is a veteran, long past his time in the Ivy League. I don't believe in the chances of a 4th round QB being a long term starter anymore than you believe Geno can be one. I don't think Petty will be the next Russell or Brady anymore than you think Geno will be that guy.

For that matter, if teams would have known Russell was going to be that good, he wouldnt have fallen in the 3rd.
Petty, IMHO, is that good. The guy has the leadership qualities that the team rallies around.

If you really thought he was that good you would be saying no way to drafting a top QB next season if the Jets find themselves in that spot..we will just have to wait and see with Petty.

If he was as good as Russell, he'll start week 1 like Russell did. Russell was mind blowing his rookie preseason and looked amazing. He was the clear cut starter. If petty is in the same stratosphere as Russell, we'll see it in the preseason when he's throwing against UPS employees.

Maybe you missed it but Geno Smith,.a total pile of garbage started in week one and thankfully after two seasons as the worst QB in football, we have Fitzpatrick to get him off the field and hopefully Bryce Petty to take over for the future

I guess Brady, Favre, Rodgers, Namath and 90 percent of the QBS in the HOF also weren't any good or as good as Smith because they failed your infallible "start week one" standard for QB quality measurement too

What is your obsession with Geno Smith? This is a petty thread. There are other threads to discuss Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Now, a mod should be setting better expectations with you on how to post on this site, but I can tell you it would be great if on threads on other topics other than Geno and Fitz, you could keep the discussion about the thread's topic.

Now, my post was about Petty, and the ridiculous comparison to Russell Wilson, who was not 24. Was not recovering from a back injury, was in 2 pro offenses in college, and comes from a rigid religious family where he has strong morals and self discipline that made him a great leader. Wilson arrived at camp and wasn't supposed to compete to start but he picked up the offense lightening fast and quickly emerged as the best QB.

As referenced above, if Petty is that type of talent, it will be on display in drills and in the preseason and he will emerge as the starter. If he is not that kind of talent, he will not. Simple as that. Wilson as a rookie would have shred Geno and Fitz. Let's see if Petty does.

And what historically QBs did or did not do have no bearing on Pettys development. I wasn't the one who made the Wilson/petty comparison.

Now every non-first rd pick is the next Tom Brady or Russell Wilson...well, we'll see.

Pretty funny really

Anyone who disagrees with your position on any topic is obsessed (and that means pretty much everybody)

Maybe the obsession lies in your mirror

I don't want to challenge any of the ideas mentioned so far in this thread for fear of being called obsessed. But I will comment on the arm strength issue by remembering what was once said about Bears QB Jack Concannon - "He can throw a football through a brick wall. The problem is, he can't hit the wall." He was just one of George Halas' terrible QB decisions he made after Sid Luckman until he lucked out with Jim McMahon.
Bottom line, arm strength doesn't guarantee success.

I still can't believe you're not being managed by a mod right now.

1. Growing pains: Entrenched as the No. 3 quarterback now that Matt Simms is gone, rookie Bryce Petty looked very much like a fourth-round pick learning a new offense. His throws weren't as crisp as they were in earlier practices and he was a split-second late on some passes, including a long ball that was deflected and intercepted in the end zone. Don't be alarmed, this was to be expected. His mind is spinning with a lot of information and he's bound to have rookie hiccups. Obviously, this won't be an overnight process.

Not to knit pick, but it's expected with Petty. Unfortunatley for us Jets fans, Geno is still doing the same mistakes and has not corrected them.

'Bryce Petty looked very much like a fourth-round pick'...imo this will be Petty's biggest obstacle to overcome. He won't get the excuses that Sanchez, and even 2nd round pick Geno has gotten, no weapons, bad OL paly, poor coaching. If QB situation fail this year there will be lots of pressure on the Jets to go out and get a franchise QB or a guy with that kind of potential.

It all depends on Geno's play. There really isnt any pressure on Bryce this year at all IMHO. He's not being asked to be the starter as Geno or Mark was right out of the gate. In saying so, as you had eluded to, he has to make his mark sooner or later this year in practices to showcase to the coaching staff that something is definetly there.

He's a project as Geno was. The only exception is that this regime knows these types of QB's need to be groomed (especially in ny) or the wolves will eat him alive.

IMO, Geno's play has no bearing on Petty's future. If he fails then Fitz will get the job and Geno won't be back next season. Petty can't prove anything in practice, and if/when he makes the field he has to be Brady or Russell right away, especially in this town.

Agree

Petty will play in PS and sit and watch behind a good experienced vet in Fitzpatrick and the two of them will compete for the starting job next year.

Smith and Heaps will both be gone in 2016

Maybe it's just me, but I've seen way too much of Petty in the media. More than the 3 other guys picked ahead of him combined. I almost feel Like he cares just as much about his career after football. Hope he pipes down
